• Maximum of six people per topic
• Register for a topic on Blackboard/Facebook
• So far:
  – Twitter and political protest = 4 people; Bit Torrent = 3
  – Wikipedia, Anti-war protest organisation, Knowledge
production and higher ed = 0 people
• Can choose same topic as for Part A of A1 but can
  also do a different one
  – Working on a particular topic for this reading activity
is not a commitment for the assignment
Week 3 Reading Activity
• Publish your posts during Week 3
• This is not assessed work – can be completed
  as a group of six/in pairs/individually…
  – Organise among yourselves!
• Not a compulsory activity, but a way for
everyone to provide initial comments on their
  chosen topic
Assignment 1: A
• Due: Monday 24 December 2012, 9am (Perth
  time)
• Building collaborative knowledge database
around the nine examples from Module 2
• Work for this assignment is individual, but
sharing resources with the rest of the class
Assignment 1: A
• Choose one of the nine examples
   – No limit on how many students pick a topic
   – A good idea to have all of the nine topics represented,
     though!
• Find at least four resources about this topic,
share them with the group using the social
bookmarking site Diigo (in the specific-group
  page):
Assignment 1: A
• Resources need to be a mix of academic/other
  sources
• Articles might not directly address the same exact
topic (e.g. specific context of case study), but
might discuss similar uses of online tools
• Resources you choose and share on Diigo should
all cover the specific context of your example
(such as the London riots) and/or the online tools
(Blackberry) that are being used for collaboration
and organisation and how they are being
  deployed
Assignment 1: A
• Need to add each of these four resources to
  Diigo
• Include for each new resource:
  – URL of resource
  – Title
  – Comment providing information about resource,
    reason chosen
  – Relevant tags
Assignment 1: A

             Post Bookmark
Assignment 1: A
Assignment 1: A
• For each resource, you need to prepare a 200-
300 word commentary on why you have
  chosen it
  – Can include this in your Diigo comment, but can
also work on it between posting on Diigo and
    submitting assignment
Assignment 1: A
• Commentaries need to critically engage with the
articles - why are they useful for studying your
  chosen example?
  – Briefly state what the article is about, but don't focus
too much on just summarising what the authors have
    said
  – Instead, try and explain the significance of this
research and identify its importance for this project
     • What (new) information does it provide (about internet
       organisation/collaboration/the specific case)?
     • How is it relevant to the topic you chose?
     • Why is this an appropriate/reputable source for your topic?
Assignment 1: A
• The four commentaries need to be included in
a Word document and submitted (complete
  with cover sheet) via Blackboard
  – Assessment criteria in study guide
  – Include details for the resource each commentary
    discusses
  – Referencing: APA style
  – Academic writing
Assignment 1: A
• Part A summary:
  – Pick a topic from the nine featured in Module 2
  – Find four additional resources about this topic
  – Share resources on Diigo
  – Write one 200-300 word commentary per
    resource
  – Submit commentaries as Word document via
    Blackboard
  – Due: 24 December, 9am (Perth time)
Assignment 1: B
• Look at resources shared by other students in
  the Diigo group
• Leave comments for at least four of these
  resources
     • Resources should be on a different topic to the one you
       chose
     • Can all be on one topic or on a range of topics
Assignment 1: B
• Each comment should be 200-300 words long,
  and consider:
  – how the case discussed relates to the one you chose
  – any links you can see between the different examples
  – the reliability of the source of the information
  – relevance to the specific topic
  – how useful you found it
  – its value as a resource for this project
  – be critical but constructive
Assignment 1: B
• Due: Monday 7 January 2013, 9am (Perth time)
• The four commentaries need to be included in a
Word document and submitted (complete with
  cover sheet) via Blackboard
  – Assessment criteria in study guide
  – Include details for the resource each commentary
    discusses
  – Referencing: APA style
  – Academic writing
