4. Movement to Singapore
• After failure of her marriage with pilot PKN Rao, She moved to
Singapore. There she established clinic for poor, most of whom were
migrant labourers from India.
• Met some members of Subhash Chandra Bose's Indians National
Army and influenced by Subhash Chandra.
• Subsequently, she had joined the Indian National Army (INA) and
began to play active role in India independence league.
5. Rani Of Jhansi Regiment
• Lakshmi heard that Subhash Chandra Bose is determined to make a
women regiment to fight for India independence and Lakshmi
showed her interest.
• She was given mandate to set up Women’s regiment called as Rani of
Jhansi regiment and Women responded enthusiastically o join the
brigade.
• Since then Dr Lakshmi Swami Nathan became Captain Lakshmi –
Identity remained with her for life.
6. Her Commitment & Contributions to the Society
1. During Bangladesh Crisis- she organized relief camp
and medical aid in Calcutta.
2. A founding member of All India Democratic Women
Association.
3. Led medical team at Bhopal after the gas tragedy in
December 1984
4. Worked towards restoring peace at Kanpur following
the anti sikh roits in 1984.
5. Was nominated for President-ship and she was the
proud sole contender to the Late A.P.J Abdul Kalam

country’s independence.

10. Death
• On 23rd July 2012 Lakshmi Sahgal died because of cardiac arrest,
• Her body was given to Kanpur medical collage for medical research.
• Captain Lakshmi Sahgal International Airport is proposed in Kanpur
district.
