Notas do Editor

  1. Día is a nationwide celebration of children, families and reading held annually on April 30th.Día brings families together and emphasizes the importance of literacy for every child regardless of linguistic or cultural background.Hundreds of libraries, schools and communities throughout the country will host celebrations and programs that honor multiculturalism and stress the importance of books and literacy.
  2. Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. International Children’s Day was declared at the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva in 1925.
  3. In Mexico, Children's Day is celebrated on April 30. It is also known as "El Día Del Niño". On this day teachers in schools organize the day for their children. Lessons are suspended from 12 noon, sometimes earlier. They organize games, music, and the children bring in their favorite foods to share with others. Some families also have a day out with their children. There are special activities for the children in parks and sports centers. Sometimes, also, the children will be given presents by their families. This is the day when children are really honored in Mexico.
  4. In 1996, author Pat Mora learned about the Mexican tradition of celebrating April 30th as El día del niño, the day of the child. Pat thought, “We have Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Yes! We need kids’ day too, but I want to connect all children with bookjoy, the pleasure of reading.”
  5. Día is sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.ALSC is the national center of Día, through grants from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.ALSC is working with other national organizations, such as REFORMA: the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, to initiate communication and education efforts that promote Día to families across the United States. This new website is funded entirely by the generous support of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
  6. Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures. The common goals of all Día programming are to:- Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries.- Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.- Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.- Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.
