2. What is D&D?
Dungeons & Dragons is a system for tabletop gaming
Tabletop Gaming : collaborative storytelling around a table
(physical or virtual), using the players’ imagination and
creativity to create the story, characters, and world and
using dice and other mechanics to drive gameplay.
D&D is the most popular system, but there are many others!

3. The IRL Lore
Created in 1972 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson
Inspired by tabletop miniature war games and set in the world of
“Blackmoor” which was inspired by Tolkien’s "Lord of the Rings"
The idea: Player’s will play a single character that they will maintain
from game to game, and would explore underground dungeons where
they would face perils and puzzles. Both the characters and the story
would persist from session to session, with characters working
cooperatively and improving over time.
Self published by TSR (Tactical Studies Rules) – a company made just to
publish D&D
Purchased by Wizards of the Coast in 1997

5. Anatomy of a D&D Game
The DM: Dungeon Master, the person who is moderating the game,
Playing all NPCS (non-player characters), and running encounters.
Knows all, sees all. *Keep in mind the DM makes and breaks the rules
The Player: In control of 1 character,
makes decisions based on the dm's
storytelling
The Setting: The fictional world you're
playing in
The Plot: Provides the structure for role-
playing and sets goals for the players
The IRL: Dice, maps, figurines, character
sheets, the "admin", the snack captain

7. Session 0
Introductory and Planning session that takes place before the
game actually starts
Usually includes:
Character Creation
World-Building/Lore
Scheduling
Game Modifications or Alterations- Spelljammer or 5E?
Q&A with the DM
Good chance for new players to become acquainted with
mechanics and rules
DM gets a chance to gauge play styles and interests of players
before start of the game
