OUR CITY- ATHENS
2. THE NAME OF THE CITY
Athens has taken its
name from the
Greek goddess
Athena.
The mythology says
that Athena
with Poseidon in
Parnitha Mountain.
The winner, was going
to give his/her name
to the city.
Poseidon hit a rock
with his trident and
sea-water started
coming out of the
rock. Then, Athena hit
the ground with her
wand and an olive
germinated.
All the Olympus’ gods
voted for Athena, so
the name of the city is
Athens
3. THE GOLDEN CENTURY
The 4th century BC, was the
golden century of Pericles in
Athens.
Pericles was a politician who
made a lot of very important
buildings, like the Parthenon.
4. OUR HISTORY
In ancient times, Athens was a city-state with an incredibly strong army.
However, in 1453, Greece was conquered by the Ottomans and the Greeks
remained under the Turkish occupation for about 400 years. Since 1834, it
has been the capital city of our country.

Athens has a lot of hills. The
most important of them are :

Athens is very close to the sea. There
are a lot of beaches. Some of them
are:
Porto Rafti
Schinias
Varkiza
Glyfada etc.
