2. Zeolites are hydrated aluminosilicates characterized by high surface areas and high
cation exchange capacities.
Zeolite deposits were formed millions of years ago, when volcanoes erupted enormous
amounts of ash–aluminosilicates of alkaline and alkaline earths. Some of the wind borne
ash settled to form thick ash beds. In some cases the ash fell into lakes. In another case
water percolated through the ash beds. In both cases, the chemical reaction of volcanic
ash and salt water resulted in the formation of natural zeolites
The characteristic of a zeolite deposit was decided in it’s genesis. Small natural
differences such as temperature, geographic location and ash/water properties result in
a slightly different composition. Therefore some unique properties were given to a few
of the deposits. These small differences present during the formation of a zeolite
deposit is the reason that each natural zeolite property has distinctly unique properties
The alumina and silica in the ash stack form into a stable, open and three dimensional
honey-comb structure. There are over forty different kinds of natural zeolite structures.
For example, clinoptilolite has a 5/1 silica to alumina ratio
Zeolite is an amazing crystalline mineral capable of adsorbing and absorbing many
different types of gases, moisture, petrochemicals, heavy metals, low-level radioactive
elements and a multitude of various solutions. The channels in the zeolite provide large
surface areas on which chemical reactions can take place. The cavities and channels
within the crystal can occupy up to 50% of its volume. Zeolites can adsorb or absorb
large amounts of materials, such as ions or gas molecules

3. Zeolite has a wide range of application:
A. Wastewater Treatment
• Ammonia in municipal sludge
• Heavy metal removal
• Septic leach fields
B. Agriculture
• Odor control
• Confined animal environmental control
• Livestock feed additives
C. Horticulture
• Nurseries, Greenhouses
• Floriculture
• Vegetables/herbs
• Foliage
• Tree and shrub transplanting
• Turf grass soil amendment
• Reclamation, revegetation, landscaping
• Silviculture (forestry, tree plantations)
• Medium for hydroponic growing
D. Household Products
• Household odor control
• Pet odor control
E. Industrial Products
• Absorbents for oil and spills
• Gas separations
F. Radioactive Waste
• Site remediation/decontamination
G. Aquaculture
• Ammonia filtration in fish hatcheries
• Biofilter media

5. Disadvantage of Common Fertilizer:
• 40% of fertilizer nutrients loss due to leaching and high temperature (Journal of
oil palm research 1996, Salisbury F.B, et al. 1969)
• It does not improve soil condition (pH), aeration, irrigation and crop’s immunity
• Minimal or no Micro Nutrients
Why Using Zeolite ?
• Very cheap
• Can be combine with all type of fertilizer
• Increase costs-effectiveness up to 50% (Reduce total fertilizer cost)
• Increase product output up to 80%
• Prevent loss of fertilizer nutrients (Not effected by rain or high temperature)
• Reservoir for the nutrients which are slowly released “on demand” with the
plant itself does the regulating of the nutrients as it needs them
• Balances the pH level of soils (soil conditioner)
• High cation exchange capacity (CEC)
• Increase crop’s immunity towards crops diseases
• Improves aeration and irrigation significantly
• 100% natural and organic
• Absorbs and holds potentially harmful or toxic substances
• Contain both Macro and Micro Nutrients
• Suitable for all kinds of crops (palm oil, coconut, paddy, fruit tree, etc)
• Reduces the chance of root burning from excess ammonia
• Improves ammonia retention and reduces nitrogen losses
In conclusion the most common advantages of zeolite for agricultural applications is due
to its relatively high absorption rate, cation exchange capacity, catalysis and
dehydration capacities. Zeolites are, therefore, used to promote better plant growth by
improving the value of fertilizers. (Proven by numerous International Journal, Watanabe
1992, E Polat et al 2004, Ming and Dixon 1986)
Dossage:
150 – 200 Kgs per hectare. ‘You can cut down the usual fertilizer dosage at 40% and
replace the reduction by zeolite.
