Gyan Shakti Yojna aims to encourage girl child education, especially among minority and poor families, to empower them and secure their future. When launched in 2001, female literacy in Gujarat was only 60% compared to the national average of 74%. The program helped increase female literacy to 70.73% by providing financial bonds to over 11 lakh poor girls for their education, reducing the dropout rate to only 2%. After disasters in 2002 left the state with budget issues for education, the Chief Minister raised Rs. 44 crore by auctioning gifts to continue supporting the Gyan Shakti program.
