Introduction to the workshop
2. The LDC Expert Group
Established in 2001 to provide technical guidance and support on
adaptation to the LDCs, covering NAPAs and NAPs
Composed of LDC and Annex II members, and working hand in hand with
other constituted bodies under the Convention
Has been proving this guidance and support through technical guidelines,
technical papers, regional workshops such as this one, NAP Expos,
online contents on the LDC Portal and NAP Central, etc.
Working closely with agencies, regional centers and various
organizations in its work
For NAPs, mandated by the Conference of Parties to produce Technical
Guidelines for the NAPs, running NAP Expos, the online system NAP
Central that houses submitted NAPs, and early next year, will lead the
assessment of progress on NAPs under the SBI
3. Vision of the LEG – to guide its support to the LDCs on adaptation
Support provided by the LEG by 2020 of the achievement of:
The existence of a well-structured adaptation planning process in
the LDCs;
Formulation of robust and good-quality NAPs;
Implementation of priority adaptation needs identified in the NAPs
with funding from the GCF and other sources;
Demonstrable results in building adaptive capacity, strengthening
resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change in the LDCs.
4. Support for NAPs
Various means of support for NAPs have been set up
The LEG, working with partners through the NAP Technical Working
Group, providing technical guidance and support on NAPs, through
technical guidelines
The GEF – financial support to enable the the process to formulate and
implement NAPs, through the LDCF and SCCF
The GCF – financial support to formulate and implement the NAPs
UN organizations to develop support programmes on NAPs, e.g. the
NAP Global Support Programme implemented by UNEP and UNDP, with
funding from the LDCF and SCCF, to offer technical support
Bilateral programmes/networks e.g. NAP Global Network offering
technical support on special topics on adaptation planning
Other organizations offering sector-specific support, e.g. FAO through
NAP-Ag for agriculture, forestry and fisheries
5. Objectives of this workshop
Overall objective is to guide and support the countries in advancing
their work on NAPs
Specific objectives:
To support the countries in Elements B to D of the NAP guidelines using
the latest integrative framework for SDGs and NAPs
To enhance the capacity of the countries in accessing the GCF funding for
the formulation of NAPs
To promote South-South and regional collaboration on NAPs
To provide a platform for countries to share experiences and lessons
learned and promote best practices when formulating and implementing the
NAPs
To provide a survey of available technical support as well as financial
support
