With verbs that express emotion we use the subjunctive
in the dependent clause (after que) if there is a change
of subject from the independent clause.
Verbs of emotion are hope, fear, glad, worried, regret,
surprise, etc. (esperar, temer, tener miedo, alegrarse,
preopcuparse, sentir, sorprender, etc.).
I’m afraid that he won’t arrive on time.
Me preocupo de que no llegue a tiempo.
We regret that they won’t be here.
Sentimos que no estén aquí.
He hopes she will graduate in May.

When there is no change of subject in the two clauses
then we do not use the subjunctive but rather the
infinitive.
I hope I can go to Costa Rica next month.
Espero poder ir a Costa Rica el mes que viene.
We’re worried that we won’t receive the news on time.
Nos preocupamos no recibir las noticias a tiempo.
He’s glad he is going to Europe in the spring.
Se alegra ir a Europa en la primavera.
