Northern Kentucky saw a quadrupling of drug overdose deaths from 1999-2012, prompting medical, grassroots, business and government organizations to convene in September 2012 to address the growing opioid epidemic. The Northern Kentucky Area Development District (NKADD) serves as the convener and fiscal agent, administering grants and hiring the director of the Northern Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy (NKODCP). The NKODCP board oversees programs and partnerships between various stakeholders, including law enforcement, health departments, hospitals, treatment providers and community groups, to collectively respond to the crisis.
