RESTful Architecture is effectively an implementation of Resource-Oriented architecture (ROA). ROA - is a good fit for Service oriented Architecture (SOA) implementation. Check out KickStartPros approach on RESTful API Design. * REST = REpresentational State Transfer * REST is Resource Based Representation. REST identifies things by JSON or XML & URIs. * REST behavior/actions are identified by HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE). * Using Uniform Interface Architecture with REST you can decouple Client (like Browser/Android App/iOS App) and Server. * REST using Layered System and Cacheable Architecture gives better performance.

Traditional virtualization technologies have been used by cloud infrastructure providers for many years in providing isolated environments for hosting applications. These technologies make use of full-blown operating system images for creating virtual machines (VMs). According to this architecture, each VM needs its own guest operating system to run application processes. More recently, with the introduction of the Docker project, the Linux Container (LXC) virtualization technology became popular and attracted the attention. Unlike VMs, containers do not need a dedicated guest operating system for providing OS-level isolation, rather they can provide the same level of isolation on top of a single operating system instance. An enterprise application may need to run a server cluster to handle high request volumes. Running an entire server cluster on Docker containers, on a single Docker host could introduce the risk of single point of failure. Google started a project called Kubernetes to solve this problem. Kubernetes provides a cluster of Docker hosts for managing Docker containers in a clustered environment. It provides an API on top of Docker API for managing docker containers on multiple Docker hosts with many more features.

Nobody likes false negatives. When your Nagios probes fail to detect a problem, it can hurt your sales, your reputation, and even your ego (especially your ego). The solution: tune the thresholds. Right? You can handle a couple spurious late-night pages if it means you’ll reliably detect real failures. I will argue that – while easy – exchanging false negatives for false positives does more harm than good. Borrowing the medical concepts of specificity and sensitivity, I’ll show how deceptive this tradeoff can be. I’ll also make the case that putting in the extra effort to minimize both types of falsehoods is necessary and healthy. When the alarm goes off, you shouldn’t have to spend precious minutes sniffing for smoke.

DevOps and Cloud are transforming the software release process, one which spans multiple teams across development and operations (including testing, infrastructure management), into a collaborative process, with all teams working together to deliver solutions into production faster. This session details how to implement a continuous delivery process for Oracle SOA/BPM projects, both on-premise and in the cloud, which transform the release process into an automated, reliable, high quality delivery pipeline that that deliver projects faster, with less risk and less cost. It details the processes and best practices that need to be established, how to use tools to automate and govern the build, deployment and configuration of code from our first initial environment through to production. 1. Learn how DevOps and Continuous Delivery can stream-line the delivery of integration / bpm projects into production. 2. Learn how DevOps plus the Cloud service can accelerate the implementation of on-premise Oracle SOA . 3. Learn best practice for implementing DevOps or Continuous Delivery for Oracle SOA projects on-cloud and on-premise. 4. How to use tools to automate and govern the build, deployment and configuration of code from dev through to production 5. How to leverage the Cloud for Dev and Test, and the benefits this provides.

DevOps is not a new technology or a product. It's an approach or culture of SW development that seeks stability and performance at the same time that it speeds software deliveries to the business. We will discuss this cultural shift where development teams have to accept the feedback of operations teams and the operations team should be ready to accept frequent updates to the SW that it's running. Did you know that Oracle is already putting RESULT_CACHE hints in their Apex code that will kick in as soon as you go to 11g. The Oracle 11g results cache transforms the way we can access data in an Oracle database. It presents an option for lightning fast access to data. If it is really the solution to all our performance problems we should be writing all our code in 10g to take advantage of it when we get to 11g. This presentation will describe the feature, demonstrate how we can write our code to take advantage of it, and discuss the realities of its benefits and limitations.

This is a story about how we struggled to implement strict latency requirements in a service implemented with Scala and Netty. And how we managed to do that. The most common latency contributors are an in-process locking, thread scheduling, I/O, algorithmic inefficiencies and, of course, garbage collector. I will share our experience of dealing with the causes. And tell what you can do to prevent them from affecting the production.

Presented by Gregg Donovan, Senior Software Engineer, Etsy.com, Inc. Understanding the impact of garbage collection, both at a single node and a cluster level, is key to developing high-performance, high-availability Solr and Lucene applications. After a brief overview of garbage collection theory, we will review the design and use of the various collectors in the JVM. At a single-node level, we will explore GC monitoring -- how to understand GC logs, how to monitor what % of your Solr request time is spend on GC, how to use VisualGC, YourKit, and other tools, and what to log and monitor. We will review GC tuning and how to measure success. At a cluster-level, we will review how to design for partial availability -- how to avoid sending requests to a GCing node and how to be resilient to mid-request GC pauses. For application development, we will review common memory leak scenarios in custom Solr and Lucene application code and how to detect them.

Did you know that Python preallocates integers from -5 to 257? Reusing them 1000 times, instead of allocating memory for a bigger integer, can save you a couple milliseconds of code’s execution time. If you want to learn more about this kind of optimizations then, … well, probably this presentation is not for you :) Instead of going into such small details, I will talk about more “sane” ideas for writing faster code. After a brief overview of how you can speed up your Python code in general, we will dig into source code optimization. I will show you some simple and fast ways of measuring the execution time of your code, and then we will discuss examples of how to improve some common code structures. You will see: * The fastest way of removing duplicates from a list * How much faster your code is when you reuse the built-in functions instead of trying to reinvent the wheel * What is faster than the “for loop” * If the lookup is faster in a list or a set * When it’s better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
