   – There are 2 unofficial apps in the Czech Rep.

• So, should we have one?
    – 10 % UV of Ustav44.cz were mobile

    – 84 % of stakeholders own a smartphone

    – 88 % use mobile internet connection

    – University has no mobile strategy

• It‘s difficult, but not that much

• There are frameworks (PhoneGap, uMobile)

   – Review RU Library experiences of creating mobile services

   – Foster partnership with other groups on the campus

   – Adapt services to mobile environment, find library‘s role in wider strategy

2. Why should university library focus on mobile initiative?
   – Provide student-centred services

   – Students expect services to be accessible on web as well on mobile

   – Number of smartphone users is increasing dramatically

   – 2007        First SMS services to send titles to mobile phone

   – 2008        Simple mobile website with workshops and events

   – 2008        We need a „local user research“

   – Fall 2008 Survey of 811 library users

4. What were the key findings of conducted survey?
   – Services: booking study rooms, checking hours, borrower records and catalogue

   – Web services of library are not very user-friendly

   – Users want other campus services on mobile too

   – 2009        Library updated mobile services and improved anything else

   – 2009        Library was asked to join Ryerson mobile project

    – School of Management (R+M), Faculty of Eng., Architecture and Science (IT)

    – Need to create own web-based framework, pitfalls with all the devices

   – Hybrid app made by HTML5

   – So TBU/anyone else can built upon centralized information

Summary
• Research is very important to find out needs of stakeholders
   – Pre-development survey as well as feedback survey

• Be prepared for a long distance run/development
   – With many involved institutions

   – It‘s necessary to been backed up by IT folks

• Yet building a simple app is very easy with frameworks

• Building an app is just the beginning
   – Analysis of statistics, improving services
