- If I think blogging is a good practice for academics because it encourages discussion, sharing, thinking out loud, reflection, and is also useful for working through stuff, finding old stuff, etc then it’s good practice for students too.
- The rise of many of these web 2.0 tools has been driven by blogs – because content can be easily shared. The embed function means you can just paste them in. - We tend to think of blogs as journals, but you can think of them as easy publishing platforms. People often ask me about setting up a web site and I recommend using a blog platform, not because they necessarily want to keep a blog but because it is easy and has all the functionality you want. - You can subscribe to blogs so students (or the students tutor) get updates whenever they happen. But you can start doing more interesting things too – for instance Tony Hirst has been taking OpenLearn content and getting it to be delivered in small daily chunks which people subscribe to
- Wikis are collaborative web pagesLots of free tools available, used widely in large scale projects
- Students work together to create a joint page
- Every year students find good resources which we throw away – why not use a wiki to gather them which grows every year?
