Definition :
Reading comprehension is refers to
the ability to understand information
presented in written form. It can be
what we see on the text, newspaper etc.
1
It is due to the inability to understand
the meaning of a word, a phrase or a
sentence.
2
It is due to the inability to make out
how the sentences are related to one
another in a paragraph or passage.
3
Poor comprehension can be due to
lack of interest or concentration.
4
It can be due to the physical or mental
state of the reader.
5
Inability to understand can be due to
unfamiliarity of the concept.
6
Falling to understand a single
paragraph in a passage can be the
reason for poor comprehension.
1
You must read a variety of materials without
limiting yourself to textbooks as it helps you
to understand how information is organized
in a text.
2
Read a big portion of the material otherwise
it would be difficult to access reading
comprehension.
3
Circle the unknown or unfamiliar words as
you read so that you can look it up in a
dictionary and find is meaning for better
comprehension.
4
Try to make notes of the material you have
read so as to see if a particular area can be
recalled after some time.
5
Consider how interesting the subject matter
is and how much you already know about the
subject.
6
Answer questions about the material after
reading it in order to find out how much of it
you have understood.
Students are better prepared for class.
Boosts the confidence and self-esteem
of the student.
Increases student participation in class.
The performance of student increases.
Skimming and scanning
Reading a text without pausing to study the details
is called skimming. While reading slowly and
carefully and looking for specific information that
you are interested in is called scanning.
Non-verbal signals
Non-verbal signals are certain style features, such
as different fonts, bold print, underlining, or italics.
The meaning of these style features can differ from
one text to another.
Structure of the text
An important aspect of reading is prediction. The introduction
mostly informs you about what you can expect. The body consists
of paragraphs. Each paragraphs deals with one aspect of the
subject matter. Paragraphs are linked in a logical way.The
conclusion sums up and puts the subject matter in the right
perspective. This structure holds good for all texts.
Structure of paragraph
A typical paragraph consists of three parts. The first part
contains the topic sentence, which is the heart of the
paragraph. The second part contains sentences, which
give further explanation on that aspect. The last part of a
paragraph is often a summary of the paragraph.
Punctuation
It makes it easier to understand the grammatical
structures. Punctuation tells you how the author
wants you to interpret a piece of text.
Author’s viewpoint
(reader’s inference)
You can conclude the position of the author from
certain words and phrases used by the author in
the text.
Reader anticipation
Readers, including those who have a wide and
flexible vocabulary will come across words whose
meanings are unfamiliar to them. You may have
often come across a not-too-familiar word whose
meaning you were able to guess accurately. This is
possible if you understand the relationships
between words in meaning and form.
Summarizing
While summarizing you may make a note of the
most important points in the text as it is difficult to
remember the contents of the text if it is sufficiently
long. The length of the summary largely depends
on the density of the text.
