IRC Orientation

- Welcome to the IRC. There are three IRCs located in the green, red and yellow building. IRCs are more commonly called library media centers
- The IRCs are open during normal schools hours. One IRC is open after school until 2:50
- Unless you come with a class, you need an academic pass to enter the library. You should get one from one of your subject teachers. Upon entering the IRC, please sign in at the front desk.
- The IRCs are a working classroom, so please come ready and prepared to work. You need to show respect for library materials, other students, and library staff. Please return any items you borrow, and remember that food, drink, and gum are not allowed.
- The IRCs have some things in common. Each have (both general and specific reference books, magazines for pleasure and research, and newspapers. There are copies of course textbooks for in library use. There are computers, printers, headphones and a scanner in every IRC. We each also have a Nook, or electronic reader, which can be used in the IRC
- The IRCs have 25 stations for student use. Their primary purpose is for school work. You may use the computers with a class or during a directed academic. Students may print their work after asking permission from the librarian
- Databases are very useful tools in research. They contain information not available on the free web. The databases gather information from a variety of reliable sources. Passwords are available from the IRC staff.
- The library collection is divided among the three media centers. The fiction books are located in the green and yellow IRCS. There is a variety of popular fiction and the classics.
- The IRCs contain special collections. The GIRC has books on music, the arts, cooking , fashion and more
- The RIRC contains a nonfiction collection. If you are searching for information on history, economics, business or careers, the RIRC is the place for you.
- The RIRC has a special collection of books on social issues.
- Along with fiction books, the YIRC has a collection of sports books including biographies of athletes.

- Carol, do you want to just do the policy orally, or do you want these few words here? I don’t care either way.
- The BHS Book Club meets every other week in the Green IRC. Once a month, students discuss a book they all read while sharing some snacks. In addition to reading and discussing books, there are opportunities to get involved in various activities and contests. See a librarian for more information.
