4. An obese child’s life span is shorter than that of an healthy child because obesity leads to many health problems (Hicks)Including sleep apnea, arthritis and cancer (Hicks)
5. Reasons Why Many Children are Obese The foods that children eat at lunch on a daily basis are fattening. Schools expose children to unhealthy snacks. Schools do not mandate enough exercise into their curriculum.
6. School Lunch Schools serve the students processed meat Processed meats are high in sodium, calories, and sugar (Rotondarot, Sgobbo, Summersast, and Hayst 1) They can also put the child at risk for getting kidney or stomach cancer (Rotondarot, Sgobbo, Summersast, and Hayst 1)
7.
8. Unhealthy Snacks in School The snacks that are in the vending machines in schools are highly unhealthy Students often sell candy to other students in school for school-related fundraisers Some schools have stores within the school that serve unhealthy snacks to the students
9. Not Enough Exercise Programs in Schools Physical Education was one of the first cuts made to school budgets (Sealey) Gym is the only time a student get to move around during the course of a day Not enough familiarity with exercise at a young age can lead to a poor habit later on in the child’s life (Sealey)
10. A Child With High Levels of Fitness Do Better Academically In 2005, the California Department of Education did a case study that showed that fitness correlates with academics (Sealey) A child that is physically fit will perform better on tests than child who is obese (Sealey) Therefore, physical education is as important as the other subjects in the school curriculum (Sealey)
11. Michelle Obama and Let’s Move Michelle Obama started this campaign to encourage children to eat healthier and exercise (“New York Times” A30) She plan to have schools serve more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to children (Hellmich, and Hall) She also want to keep recess in the school curriculum because she believes that it helps children relax (Hellmich, and Hall)
12. Childhood Obesity Should be Focused more in School Schools should make their lunches healthier Should not allow students to have such easy access to unhealthy snacks Schools need to allow students to have more exercise programs
