2. In the early-1900s many
Italians lived in poverty. A
growing population
meant that it was difficult
for peasants to find work.
They hoped that by
moving to Scotland they
would get a job or higher
wages.

3. Many Italian immigrants came
from the areas of Tuscany and
Rome.
Italians lived all across Scotland,
including Ayrshire. Like most
immigrant groups they were
attracted to areas where there
was already an Italian
community.

4. Many Italians set up their
own businesses in Scotland,
including selling ice cream
in the streets using carts.
As a result of this, Italians
did not face the same
resentment as other
immigrants for taking jobs.

5. Eventually Italians opened up
shops and cafes to sell ice
cream and fish and chips.
Some religious Scots did not
like the fact that these shops
opened on Sundays.
However others liked the
alternative to alcohol.

6. Some Italian groups and clubs
were set up in Scotland to keep
links with Italy.
When World War Two started
in 1939, many Italians were
interned (locked up) due to
Italy’s support for Germany.
Italian businesses were also
attacked.
