How is the trekking route and
itinerary of the Kedarkantha trek-
Day 1- Sankri to Juda ka Talab
We start our trek from Sankri, aiming for the
captivating Juda Ka Talab, nestled at an altitude
of 2,774 meters. This leg of the journey covers a
distance of about 4 kilometers and usually takes
around 3 to 4 hours.
Beginning early in the morning after a hearty
breakfast, our trek offers a series of pleasant
experiences. We pass through charming local
villages like Saud, where we catch glimpses of
children heading to school and women
immersed in their daily activities.
4. The path leads us through a dense pine forest,
gradually transitioning into a steeper climb.
Eventually, we find ourselves on a ridge, treating
us to sweeping views of the surrounding
scenery. Continuing along the ridge, the trail
becomes more level and spacious, allowing for a
more relaxed pace.
The thick forest provides a welcome coolness,
offering relief from the sun's warmth. Finally, we
arrive at the renowned Juda Ka Talab, a small
lake adorned with three floating islands. This is
where we set up our camp, ready to enjoy a
delightful dinner beneath the starry night sky.
Day 2- Judaka Talab to Kedarkantha Basecamp
From Juda Ka Talab, the path goes through thick
pine forests and leads to a beautiful meadow
with huts where shepherds stay. After climbing
about a thousand feet more, trekkers will reach
the Kedarkantha base camp. This part of the trek
usually takes about 2-3 hours.
The trail from Juda Ka Talab to the base camp is
really pretty, which is great for people who like
taking pictures or just love being in nature.
5. It might be a bit cooler there because it's not as
insulated, but the base camp gives you amazing
views of the famous peaks in Uttarakhand.
That's why it's a really good spot for camping.
Day 3- Kedarkantha Basecamp to Summit and
trek to Juda ka Tal-
The hike from the base camp to the summit isn't
very long. Once you get to the top, you'll see an
incredible view all around you. You can see the
peaks of Uttarakhand, the Chaainsheel Pass, and
the Kailash ranges in Himachal. You'll even get a
view of the Har Ki Dun valley below. At the
Kedarkantha summit, there's a pile of stones
arranged with a Trishul pointing upwards.
According to legend, this peak was originally
meant to be the Kedarnath temple. But during
meditation, Lord Shiva, who was disguised as a
cow to hide from the Pandavas, got disturbed
by the villagers. Because of this, he moved to
the current location of the Kedarnath temple.
6. After spending some time at the summit, we'll
hike back to the base camp and then head to
Hargaon after lunch (which is a 2 km trail).
Hargaon is a big camping area on the way to
Sankri, where we'll spend the night before
saying goodbye to this beautiful place.
Day 4- Hargaon to Sankri
Today marks the last leg of our trek as we make
our way down from Kedarkantha to Sankri. This
part of the journey covers a distance of 4
kilometers and typically takes around 2-3 hours.
Once we arrive in Sankri, you'll have the
remainder of the day to wander around this
lovely village and its neighboring ones like
Gangad and Osla. These places are known for
their friendly hospitality and traditional Pahari
culture. It's a great opportunity to experience
the local way of life.
Sankri is also where the road ends for the
Govind Balabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary, making
it an important access point to this natural
sanctuary.
