1. thinking open data
lessons learnt from building an
open source ruby on rails metadata creation platform
for special collections e.g. performing arts

2. github.com/warburg/warburg
• originally developed for Vlaams Theater
Instituut in 2009-2010 by 10to1
• now in use at Contredanse and interest at
other european performing arts
documentation centres
• in action at data.vti.be
• looking for developers & use cases
10. postpone standards
• design a relational database around business
logic ; narrow application of standards leads
to inefficient databases
• special collections treat documents as books
or periodicals at times, as ephemera or as
part of archival units when appropriate
• same element makes sense in different
standards: dcterms, mods, foaf ... repetition is
a plus in linked open data
12. URI bridges systems
• if book copies get a uniquely identifying URI,
• you can use any CRM or POS for patron &
lending administration
• vertical integration across vendors
• if authors get a uniquely identifying URI,
• aggregating e.g. physical books with articles
in repository doesn’t require extra software
