URBAN GUIDLINES FOR GENERAL NEW DEVELOPMENTS. THE PROPOSED NEW
COMMUNITY ADMINISTATION CENTRE ALSO SHOULD REFLECT THIS HERITAGE.
The Searson Brothers designed the Sorell railway buildings (also others in Tasmania such as St Marys):
DeBox proposed to use conventional low budget style construction generally.; subtly incorporated design
cues from the Searson style will carry the highlights of the building whilst fully modern 2012 detail and
finishes keep the building aligned with the future.
THE SKETCH SHOWN IS A POTENTIAL BARE OUTLINE AT THIS STAGE. THE FORM MAY CHANGE AS
DESIGN RESEARCH ENHANCES UNDERSTANDING.
THE ACCOMODATION PER COUNCIL'S BRIEF WILL FIT IN
APPROXIMATELY 1200 SM OF FLOOR. THE NATURE OF THE
CONSTRUCTION IS VERY SIMPLE WITH SOME DETAIL
ENHANCEMENTS. IT IS EXPECTED THAT $25,000/SM WILL BE
ADEQUATE SUBJECT TO COUNCILS FINISHING & SERVICING NEEDS.

IS IMPORTANT. THIS BUILDING PRESENTS AS 2 STOREY TO CLAIM A DIGNIFIED PRESENCE.
ITS LOCATION SHOULD BE KEY IN THE URBAN PRECINCT. CURRENTLY THE URBAN PRECINCT IS UNCLEAR IN
CHARACTER & LAYOUT. THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE CLEAR; TO THIS END THE PROPOSAL SUGGESTS A PRECINCT PLAN
BASED ON THE OLD RAIL YARDS & ENHANCED BY OTHER HERITAGE CUES & EVEN THE OLD FOOTBALL OVAL
(TOMORROW HERITAGE) - REFER SHEET 1.
COUNCIL HOLDS A CONSERVATION PLAN FOR THE OLD ENGINE SHED: WHICH HAS INFORMED THE PLAN & FOUND
GENERAL STRONG SUPPORT FROM ITS WRITER SAMUEL DIX. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE HISTORICAL SOCIETIES WOULD
ENDORSE THE PLAN ALSO AS AID TO REGIONAL HERITAGE.
ENOUGH SAID OF HERITAGE: TODAY IS TODAY; HITECH & MODERN; THESE ELEMENTS WILL UNDERPIN THE PROJECT.;
THE HERITAGE CUES BEING ARTFULLY INCORPORATED.

THE MATERIALS ARE MANIPULATED SO AS TO
CONTRIBUTE TO DESIRED BUILDING CHARACTER.. IT WILL
BE A HYBRID OF MASONRY, TIMBER, STEEL, GLASS,
POSSIBLY CORRUGATED METAL IN THE EXTERNAL &
POSSBLY CORRUGATED METAL ROOF.
