ENGLISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE
BY : MD IRFAN, DEEPTHI, WAHED, KESHAV, VAIBHAV.
OVERVIEW :
• ENGLISH : its purpose and history.
• Importance of language.
• World wide use.
• Technical developments in usage.
• Indian English.
• Conclusion.
What is a language?
A system of communication consisting
of sounds, words, and grammar, or
the system of communication used by people
in a particular country or type of work.
Language’s over the world :
There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the
world today. However, about 2,000 of those languages
have fewer than 1,000 speakers. The most popular
language in the world is Mandarin Chinese. There are
1,213,000,000 people in the world that speak that
language.
1.English language and its history
:English is a West Germanic language that originated from
Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain in the fifth to
seventh centuries by Germanic invaders and settlers from
what is now northwest Germany and the Netherlands.
Influence of English language
 Proto English-These dialects had most of the typical West
Germanic features, including a significant amount of
grammatical inflection.
 Old English-Old English was first written using a runic script
called the futhorc, but this was replaced by a version of the
Latin alphabet introduced by Irish missionaries in the 9th
century.
 Middle English-Middle English is the form of English spoken
roughly from the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 until
the end of the 15th century.
 Modern English-The first authoritative and full featured
English dictionary, the Dictionary of the English Language,
was published by Samuel Johnson in 1755. To a high degree,
the dictionary standardised both English spelling and word
usage. Meanwhile, grammar texts by Lowth, Murray, Priestly,
and others attempted to prescribe standard usage even
further.

2.Importance of English language :
 In today’s global world, the importance of English
can not be denied and ignored since English is the
most common language spoken everywhere. With
the help of developing technology, English has
been playing a major role in many sectors
including medicine, engineering, and education,
which, in my opinion, is the most important arena
where English is needed.
Key points of importance :
 English may not be the most spoken language in the world,
but it is the official language in a large number of
countries. It is estimated that the number of people in the
world that use in English to communicate on a regular basis
is 2 billion!
 English is the dominant business language and it has
become almost a necessity for people to speak English if
they are to enter a global workforce, research from all over
the world shows that cross-border business communication
is most often conducted in English. Its importance in the
global market place therefore cannot be understated,
learning English really can change your life.
 Ex : world top films, music, books, internet surfing,
commercial use like transport, college, hospital,
educational institutions etc. English plays a dominant role.
3. World wide use of English language :
 English study is an academic discipline that includes the study
of literatures written in the English language. (including
literatures from the United Kingdom, the United States,
Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the
Philippines, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and the Middle East,
among other areas)
 More broadly, English studies explores the production of and
analysis of texts created in English (or in areas of the world in
which English is a common mode of communication).
 It is common for academic departments of "English" or "English
Studies" to include scholars of the English language, literature
(including literary criticism and literary theory), linguistics,
law, journalism, composition studies, the philosophy of
language, literacy, publishing/history of the book,
communication studies, technical communication, folklore,
cultural studies, creative writing, critical theory, disability
studies, area studies (especially American studies), theatre,
gender studies/ethnic studies, digital media/electronic
publishing, film studies/media studies, rhetoric and
philology/etymology, and various courses in the liberal arts and
humanities, among others.
Some of examples of English :
1. Music's : 2. Social networking :
3. Messaging : 4. Movies :
4.Developments in English
language :
 Language is an essential tool for learning.
 Oral language development in English differs from
acquiring academic English, and involves using English
within different contexts for different purposes.
 As a result, you should foster children's learning and
development through both direct and indirect teaching
of language in a rich, stimulating environment.
Bases of English teaching :
 Teachers should: ƒEncourage students to bring their
ideas, background knowledge, and experiences into
class learning activities. ƒBe responsive and accepting
listeners when students are talking. ƒNurture an
accepting, risk free environment where students will
feel comfortable. Language is not practiced or acquired
when students are afraid to use it. ƒAllow students to
express themselves without fear of censure – either by
adults or by fellow students.
 The general goals of English language arts across grades
are: ƒto develop students English language abilities as a
function of their thinking abilities ƒto promote personal
and social development by extending students
knowledge and use of the English language ƒto
encourage enjoyment of and proficiency in speaking,
listening, reading, and writing in English.
5. Indian English :
 Indian English is any of the forms of English characteristic of
the Indian subcontinent.
 English has slowly become one of the lingua fracas of the Indian
subcontinent (including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka),
and is the language of their cultural and political elites, offering
significant economic, political, and social advantage to fluent
speakers.
English language public instruction began in India in the 1830s
during the rule of the East India Company (India was then,
and is today, one of the most linguistically diverse regions of
the world[15]). In 1837, English replaced Persian as the official
language of the Company. Lord Macaulay played a major role
in introducing English and western concepts to education in
India.
 Though English is one of two official languages of the Union
Government of India, only a few hundred thousand Indians
have English as their first language. According to the 2005 India
Human Development Survey, of the 41,554 surveyed households
reported that 72 percent of men (29,918) did not speak any
English, 28 percent (11,635) spoke at least some English, and 5
percent (2,077, roughly 17.9% of those who spoke at least some
English) spoke fluent English.
 Among women, the corresponding percentages were 83
percent (34,489) speaking no English, 17 percent (7,064)
speaking at least some English, and 3 percent (1,246, roughly
17.6% of those who spoke at least some English) speaking
English fluently.

  • 4. 1.English language and its history :English is a West Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain in the fifth to seventh centuries by Germanic invaders and settlers from what is now northwest Germany and the Netherlands.
  • 5. Influence of English language  Proto English-These dialects had most of the typical West Germanic features, including a significant amount of grammatical inflection.  Old English-Old English was first written using a runic script called the futhorc, but this was replaced by a version of the Latin alphabet introduced by Irish missionaries in the 9th century.  Middle English-Middle English is the form of English spoken roughly from the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 until the end of the 15th century.  Modern English-The first authoritative and full featured English dictionary, the Dictionary of the English Language, was published by Samuel Johnson in 1755. To a high degree, the dictionary standardised both English spelling and word usage. Meanwhile, grammar texts by Lowth, Murray, Priestly, and others attempted to prescribe standard usage even further.

With the help of developing technology, English has been playing a major role in many sectors including medicine, engineering, and education, which, in my opinion, is the most important arena where English is needed.
  • 8. Key points of importance :  English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language in a large number of countries. It is estimated that the number of people in the world that use in English to communicate on a regular basis is 2 billion!  English is the dominant business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak English if they are to enter a global workforce, research from all over the world shows that cross-border business communication is most often conducted in English. Its importance in the global market place therefore cannot be understated, learning English really can change your life.  Ex : world top films, music, books, internet surfing, commercial use like transport, college, hospital, educational institutions etc. English plays a dominant role.

Language is not practiced or acquired when students are afraid to use it. ƒAllow students to express themselves without fear of censure – either by adults or by fellow students.  The general goals of English language arts across grades are: ƒto develop students English language abilities as a function of their thinking abilities ƒto promote personal and social development by extending students knowledge and use of the English language ƒto encourage enjoyment of and proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English.

English language public instruction began in India in the 1830s during the rule of the East India Company (India was then, and is today, one of the most linguistically diverse regions of the world[15]).
