Lesson 6: Follow Up a Bad Deed with a Good One
Sheikh Khalid Al-Husainan
(May Allah protect him)
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed:
‫ﺎ‬َ‫﴿ﻳ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻬ‬‫ﱡ‬‫ـ‬‫ﻳ‬َ‫أ‬َ‫ﻳﻦ‬ِ‫ﺬ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻟ‬‫ا‬‫ﻮا‬ُ‫ﻨ‬َ‫آﻣ‬َ‫ﺐ‬ِ‫ﺘ‬ُ‫ﻛ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻜ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬َ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻋ‬ُ‫ﺎم‬َ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱢ‬‫ﺼ‬‫اﻟ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻤ‬َ‫ﻛ‬َ‫ﺐ‬ِ‫ﺘ‬ُ‫ﻛ‬‫ﻰ‬َ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻋ‬َ‫ﻳﻦ‬ِ‫ﺬ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻟ‬‫ا‬ْ‫ﻦ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻜ‬ِ‫ﻠ‬ْ‫ﺒ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﻗ‬َ‫ﻟ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻜ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ن‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻘ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ـ‬‫ﺘ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﺗ‬*ً‫ﺎ‬‫أﻳﺎﻣ‬

O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was for those before you, that
you may attain Taqwa. [They are] prescribed number of days.”
‫ﺑﺴﻢ‬ ‫ﷲ‬ ‫اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ‬ ‫اﻟﺮﺣﯿﻢ‬
From the advice that our Messenger () gave us is his saying, “Fear Allah wherever you may
be, and follow up an evil deed with a good one and it will erase it. And deal with people
amicably.” We will discuss one part of this hadeeth, specifically, “and follow up an evil deed
with a good one and it will erase it.” Let the motto in your life, your methodology, and your
ways and habits be that whenever you commit an act of disobedience or sin, you immediately
take to doing various good deeds and acts of worship. Allah Most High says in His Noble
Book:
﴿ِ‫ﻢ‬ِ‫َﻗ‬‫أ‬َ‫و‬َ‫ة‬ َ‫ﻼ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺼ‬‫اﻟ‬ِ‫ﻲ‬َ‫ﻓ‬َ‫ﺮ‬َ‫ﻃ‬ِ‫ر‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﱠﻬ‬‫ـ‬‫ﻨ‬‫اﻟ‬‫ﺎ‬ً‫ﻔ‬َ‫ﻟ‬ُ‫ز‬َ‫و‬َ‫ﻦ‬‫ﱢ‬‫ﻣ‬ِ‫ﻞ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻠ‬‫اﻟ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ِ‫ﺎت‬َ‫ﻨ‬َ‫ﺴ‬َ‫ْﺤ‬‫ﻟ‬‫ا‬َ‫ﻦ‬ْ‫ﺒ‬ِ‫ﻫ‬ْ‫ﺬ‬ُ‫ﻳ‬ِ‫ﺎت‬َ‫ﺌ‬‫ﱢ‬‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺴ‬‫اﻟ‬﴾
And establish regular prayers at the two ends of the day and at the approaches of the night. For
those things that are good remove those that are evil.
This is from the Mercy of Allah Most High. From the Mercy of Allah Most High is that good
deeds do away with evil ones.
For this reason, the Messenger () gave us various ways and means to take if we commit a
sin. Because some people… look at Satan’s ways of tricking this person… look at how Satan
tricks this person, because Allah Most High has said:
﴿َ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻛ‬َ‫و‬ُ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻄ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺸ‬‫اﻟ‬ِ‫ﺎن‬َ‫ﻧﺴ‬ِْ‫ﻺ‬ِ‫ﻟ‬ً‫وﻻ‬ُ‫ﺬ‬َ‫ﺧ‬﴾
Ah! the Evil One is but a deserter to man!
“A deserter,” in that he causes him to desert acts of obedience, desert worship, and desert
repentance. These are the tasks of Satan. Allah Most High has said:
﴿‫ﱠ‬‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬َ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻄ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺸ‬‫اﻟ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻜ‬َ‫ﻟ‬‫ﱞ‬‫و‬ُ‫ﺪ‬َ‫ﻋ‬ُ‫وﻩ‬ُ‫ﺬ‬ِ‫ﺨ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺗ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻓ‬‫ا‬‫و‬ُ‫ﺪ‬َ‫ﻋ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻤ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻧ‬ِ‫إ‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻋ‬ْ‫ﺪ‬َ‫ﻳ‬ُ‫ﻪ‬َ‫ﺑ‬ْ‫ﺰ‬ِ‫ﺣ‬‫ا‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻧ‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻜ‬َ‫ﻴ‬ِ‫ﻟ‬ْ‫ﻦ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬ِ‫ﺎب‬َ‫ﺤ‬ْ‫َﺻ‬‫أ‬ِ‫ﻌ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺴ‬‫اﻟ‬ِ‫ﺮ‬‫ﻴ‬﴾
Verily Satan is an enemy to you, so treat him as an enemy.
Treat him as an enemy. Don't treat him like a companion, a close friend, or an acquaintance.
No! Treat him like an enemy. People have flipped the issue. They always take Satan as a
friend. They don't refuse him anything he asks. We hear and we obey! No command issues
from Satan except that they immediately implement it. This gives evidence to the weak
character of the person before Satan, while Allah mentioned that Satan is weak in character:
﴿ِ‫إ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ن‬َ‫ﺪ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬َ‫ﻛ‬ِ‫ﺎن‬َ‫ﻄ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺸ‬‫اﻟ‬َ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻛ‬‫ﺎ‬ً‫ﻔ‬‫ﻴ‬ِ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ﺿ‬﴾
“…feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.”
The cunning of Satan is weak. But some people, when they commit a sin, they continue to
indulge in it. Why not do a good deed after it? He will say, “How can I do good deeds when I
have just committed a sin.” Why not? You find this person deprives himself from good deeds
and worship, because of what? Because he fell into some sin. This is one of ways Satan tricks
this person.
For example, the Prophet () advised us when he said, as narrated in the hadeeth of Uthman
bin Affan (r),
“Whoever performs wudoo like I just did and then stands and performs two rak’ahs of prayer
without distraction, all his prior sins will be forgiven,”
or,
“Allah will forgive all his prior sins.”
So its good that if a person falls into some sin, such as an impermissible glance or he spoke
something forbidden, some lie, he backbit, or anything, he immediately performs wudoo and
prays two rak’ahs. You may say, or Satan may say that you will soon fall into this sin again.
We say to you: repent to Allah now. How do you know? You may die in the next few days
after you have repented, and you will have met Allah after having repented. You may die in a
car accident or by a heart attack. How do you know? But Subhanallah! Satan does whatever is
in his means to prevent this person from performing good deeds and worship due to his falling
into sin. You find some people depriving themselves from prayer. Why don't you pray? He
says, for example, “Brother how can I pray while I have illicit sex?” This is a problem with
many of the youth. They say, “How can I pray while I indulge in illegal sex?” Ok, we ask
what is better? That a Muslim dies while he used to pray and also indulge in illegal sex, or that
he dies without praying yet indulging in illegal sex? There is no doubt that a person who
fornicates yet prays is better than the one who fornicates and does not. Without prayer, some
scholars say that he is an infidel. He dies as an infidel.
From the various means and ways, and this is one of the best ways to defeat Satan, destroy
him and burn him to ashes. All you have to do is to do a number of good deeds and acts of
worship when you fall into sin. For example, the Prophet () said: “Whoever says
Subhanallahi wa bihamdi (Glory be to Allah and all praise be to Him) a hundred times, all his
sins will be forgiven, even if they were as much as the foam of the sea.” Zabad al-bahr means
foam of the sea. No one knows how much that is except Allah Most High. Say “Subhanallahi
wa bihamdihi” a hundred times when you fall into sin. Then say after that “Astaghfirullah (I
seek Allah’s forgiveness)” a hundred times. Give charity with whatever is easy, even if it be a
small amount. Why? Because the Messenger () said, “Indeed charity extinguishes the anger
of the Lord.” Glory be to Him, Most High. As we mentioned, stand and pray two rak’ahs.
Recite a number of pages of the Quran, because - imagine - each letter of the Book of Allah
Most High counts as ten good deeds. Each page of the Quran, imagine, once I counted them…
is no less than two hundred letters. Each page of the Quran is no less than about two hundred
letters. Its not less. Two hundred or more letters. Imagine… two hundred letters times ten is
what? Two thousand good deeds!
So do various types of deeds and acts of worship if you fall into sin. Allah willing if you show
Allah from yourself… some people say, “I become weak.” Ok, you are weak in the face of
sins, why don't you be strong in performing worship? You are weak in worship also? This is
no good. This is from Satan that you say I am too weak, I can't do it. I can't resist myself, I
have no will or determination. I can't have patience when it comes to sinning. I have to sin.
We say this is not correct. This is from Satan. Ok, why don't you be strong? Didn't the Prophet
() say, “The strong Believer is more loved by Allah than the weak Believer.”?
So let your motto in this life, your methodology, and your way of doing things be that
whenever you fall into sin, you quickly do various good deeds, not just one, no, but rather a
number of good deeds and types of worship in hopes that Allah Most High, by His Mercy and
Generosity, will pardon and forgive you, and that you will revive your life from anew. In this
manner, Allah Most High willing, Allah Most High will guide you to His obedience. He will
guide you to repentance. If Allah Most High sees this trait in you. Don't say I am a hypocrite.
No this is not correct. How can I have illegal sex, steal or get drunk and then go to the Masjid
and pray? This is Satan telling you this. He says, “No, this is hypocrisy. How can you do good
deeds after having just commuted a sin? This is hypocrisy.” This is from Satan. Satan seeks to
deprive you from good deeds and worship in any way possible. What matters is that he
distances you from good deeds and worship. Be very careful from falling into this trap and
being tricked by Satan. Let this be the case at all times that when you find yourself weak,
demotivated, and deficient, turn to Allah Most High. This is one of the traits of the pious, as
Allah Most High has said:
And those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own souls,
earnestly bring Allah to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins.
And after that He said:
﴿ْ‫ﻢ‬َ‫ﻟ‬َ‫و‬‫وا‬‫ﱡ‬‫ﺮ‬ِ‫ﺼ‬ُ‫ﻳ‬ٰ‫ﻰ‬َ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻋ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻣ‬‫ﻮا‬ُ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﻓ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻫ‬َ‫و‬َ‫ن‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻤ‬َ‫ﻠ‬ْ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﻳ‬﴾
“…and they are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done.”
The Believer does not persistently commit a sin. All goodness lies in the act that when a
person falls into sin, he immediately repents to Allah. And all evil lies in the act that when a
person falls into sin, he persists in it and does it openly. It is not from the traits of the Believer
that he persists in sin. Rather, they must turn to Allah in repentance, even if you say that after
six months or a few months I will once again return to this sin. I say: repent for now. You
never know, maybe Allah will guide you to true repentance and cause you to hate this sin.
I ask Allah the Magnificent, Lord of the Noble Throne, that He guides us and you to what He
loves and is pleased with. And our final prayer is that all praise is for Allah, the Lord of all
that exists.

For those things that are good remove those that are evil. This is from the Mercy of Allah Most High. From the Mercy of Allah Most High is that good deeds do away with evil ones. For this reason, the Messenger () gave us various ways and means to take if we commit a sin. Because some people… look at Satan’s ways of tricking this person… look at how Satan tricks this person, because Allah Most High has said: ﴿َ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻛ‬َ‫و‬ُ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻄ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺸ‬‫اﻟ‬ِ‫ﺎن‬َ‫ﻧﺴ‬ِْ‫ﻺ‬ِ‫ﻟ‬ً‫وﻻ‬ُ‫ﺬ‬َ‫ﺧ‬﴾ Ah! the Evil One is but a deserter to man! “A deserter,” in that he causes him to desert acts of obedience, desert worship, and desert repentance. These are the tasks of Satan. Allah Most High has said: ﴿‫ﱠ‬‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬َ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻄ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺸ‬‫اﻟ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻜ‬َ‫ﻟ‬‫ﱞ‬‫و‬ُ‫ﺪ‬َ‫ﻋ‬ُ‫وﻩ‬ُ‫ﺬ‬ِ‫ﺨ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺗ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻓ‬‫ا‬‫و‬ُ‫ﺪ‬َ‫ﻋ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻤ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻧ‬ِ‫إ‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻋ‬ْ‫ﺪ‬َ‫ﻳ‬ُ‫ﻪ‬َ‫ﺑ‬ْ‫ﺰ‬ِ‫ﺣ‬‫ا‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻧ‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻜ‬َ‫ﻴ‬ِ‫ﻟ‬ْ‫ﻦ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬ِ‫ﺎب‬َ‫ﺤ‬ْ‫َﺻ‬‫أ‬ِ‫ﻌ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺴ‬‫اﻟ‬ِ‫ﺮ‬‫ﻴ‬﴾ Verily Satan is an enemy to you, so treat him as an enemy. Treat him as an enemy. Don't treat him like a companion, a close friend, or an acquaintance. No! Treat him like an enemy. People have flipped the issue. They always take Satan as a friend. They don't refuse him anything he asks. We hear and we obey! No command issues
  • 3. from Satan except that they immediately implement it. This gives evidence to the weak character of the person before Satan, while Allah mentioned that Satan is weak in character: ﴿ِ‫إ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ن‬َ‫ﺪ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬َ‫ﻛ‬ِ‫ﺎن‬َ‫ﻄ‬ْ‫ﻴ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺸ‬‫اﻟ‬َ‫ن‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻛ‬‫ﺎ‬ً‫ﻔ‬‫ﻴ‬ِ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ﺿ‬﴾ “…feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.” The cunning of Satan is weak. But some people, when they commit a sin, they continue to indulge in it. Why not do a good deed after it? He will say, “How can I do good deeds when I have just committed a sin.” Why not? You find this person deprives himself from good deeds and worship, because of what? Because he fell into some sin. This is one of ways Satan tricks this person. For example, the Prophet () advised us when he said, as narrated in the hadeeth of Uthman bin Affan (r), “Whoever performs wudoo like I just did and then stands and performs two rak’ahs of prayer without distraction, all his prior sins will be forgiven,” or, “Allah will forgive all his prior sins.” So its good that if a person falls into some sin, such as an impermissible glance or he spoke something forbidden, some lie, he backbit, or anything, he immediately performs wudoo and prays two rak’ahs. You may say, or Satan may say that you will soon fall into this sin again. We say to you: repent to Allah now. How do you know? You may die in the next few days after you have repented, and you will have met Allah after having repented. You may die in a car accident or by a heart attack. How do you know? But Subhanallah! Satan does whatever is in his means to prevent this person from performing good deeds and worship due to his falling into sin. You find some people depriving themselves from prayer. Why don't you pray? He says, for example, “Brother how can I pray while I have illicit sex?” This is a problem with many of the youth. They say, “How can I pray while I indulge in illegal sex?” Ok, we ask what is better? That a Muslim dies while he used to pray and also indulge in illegal sex, or that he dies without praying yet indulging in illegal sex? There is no doubt that a person who fornicates yet prays is better than the one who fornicates and does not. Without prayer, some scholars say that he is an infidel. He dies as an infidel. From the various means and ways, and this is one of the best ways to defeat Satan, destroy him and burn him to ashes. All you have to do is to do a number of good deeds and acts of worship when you fall into sin. For example, the Prophet () said: “Whoever says Subhanallahi wa bihamdi (Glory be to Allah and all praise be to Him) a hundred times, all his sins will be forgiven, even if they were as much as the foam of the sea.” Zabad al-bahr means foam of the sea. No one knows how much that is except Allah Most High. Say “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi” a hundred times when you fall into sin. Then say after that “Astaghfirullah (I
  • 4. seek Allah’s forgiveness)” a hundred times. Give charity with whatever is easy, even if it be a small amount. Why? Because the Messenger () said, “Indeed charity extinguishes the anger of the Lord.” Glory be to Him, Most High. As we mentioned, stand and pray two rak’ahs. Recite a number of pages of the Quran, because - imagine - each letter of the Book of Allah Most High counts as ten good deeds. Each page of the Quran, imagine, once I counted them… is no less than two hundred letters. Each page of the Quran is no less than about two hundred letters. Its not less. Two hundred or more letters. Imagine… two hundred letters times ten is what? Two thousand good deeds! So do various types of deeds and acts of worship if you fall into sin. Allah willing if you show Allah from yourself… some people say, “I become weak.” Ok, you are weak in the face of sins, why don't you be strong in performing worship? You are weak in worship also? This is no good. This is from Satan that you say I am too weak, I can't do it. I can't resist myself, I have no will or determination. I can't have patience when it comes to sinning. I have to sin. We say this is not correct. This is from Satan. Ok, why don't you be strong? Didn't the Prophet () say, “The strong Believer is more loved by Allah than the weak Believer.”? So let your motto in this life, your methodology, and your way of doing things be that whenever you fall into sin, you quickly do various good deeds, not just one, no, but rather a number of good deeds and types of worship in hopes that Allah Most High, by His Mercy and Generosity, will pardon and forgive you, and that you will revive your life from anew. In this manner, Allah Most High willing, Allah Most High will guide you to His obedience. He will guide you to repentance. If Allah Most High sees this trait in you. Don't say I am a hypocrite. No this is not correct. How can I have illegal sex, steal or get drunk and then go to the Masjid and pray? This is Satan telling you this. He says, “No, this is hypocrisy. How can you do good deeds after having just commuted a sin? This is hypocrisy.” This is from Satan. Satan seeks to deprive you from good deeds and worship in any way possible. What matters is that he distances you from good deeds and worship. Be very careful from falling into this trap and being tricked by Satan. Let this be the case at all times that when you find yourself weak, demotivated, and deficient, turn to Allah Most High. This is one of the traits of the pious, as Allah Most High has said: ﴿َ‫ﻳﻦ‬ِ‫ﺬ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻟ‬‫ا‬َ‫و‬‫ا‬َ‫ذ‬ِ‫إ‬‫ﻮا‬ُ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﻓ‬ً‫ﺔ‬َ‫ﺸ‬ِ‫ﺎﺣ‬َ‫ﻓ‬ْ‫َو‬‫أ‬‫ا‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻤ‬َ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻇ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻬ‬َ‫ﺴ‬ُ‫ﻔ‬‫َﻧ‬‫أ‬‫وا‬ُ‫ﺮ‬َ‫ﻛ‬َ‫ذ‬َ‫ﻪ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﻠ‬‫اﻟ‬‫وا‬ُ‫ﺮ‬َ‫ﻔ‬ْ‫ﻐ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﺘ‬ْ‫ﺎﺳ‬َ‫ﻓ‬﴾ And those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own souls, earnestly bring Allah to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins. And after that He said: ﴿ْ‫ﻢ‬َ‫ﻟ‬َ‫و‬‫وا‬‫ﱡ‬‫ﺮ‬ِ‫ﺼ‬ُ‫ﻳ‬ٰ‫ﻰ‬َ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻋ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻣ‬‫ﻮا‬ُ‫ﻠ‬َ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﻓ‬ْ‫ﻢ‬ُ‫ﻫ‬َ‫و‬َ‫ن‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﻤ‬َ‫ﻠ‬ْ‫ﻌ‬َ‫ـ‬‫ﻳ‬﴾ “…and they are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done.”
  • 5. The Believer does not persistently commit a sin. All goodness lies in the act that when a person falls into sin, he immediately repents to Allah. And all evil lies in the act that when a person falls into sin, he persists in it and does it openly. It is not from the traits of the Believer that he persists in sin. Rather, they must turn to Allah in repentance, even if you say that after six months or a few months I will once again return to this sin. I say: repent for now. You never know, maybe Allah will guide you to true repentance and cause you to hate this sin. I ask Allah the Magnificent, Lord of the Noble Throne, that He guides us and you to what He loves and is pleased with. And our final prayer is that all praise is for Allah, the Lord of all that exists.
