What the common thing that these things give
us?
Energy
Types Of Energy
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
1. Explain that energy provides the ability to do work and can
exist in different forms.
2. Differentiate between kinetic and potential energy.
3. Demonstrate how one form of energy can be converted into
other form of energy.
 Energy causes things to happen around us.
 Without energy we cannot do any thing.
 Scientists define energy as:
Energy is the ability
to do work.
Energy is measured in
joules(J).
Forms of energy
• Energy can be found in different forms such as:
• We can put all thesis forms of energy into two
categories(types): potential and kinetic.
Potential Energy , the First
type’ Is:
energy that is stored in an object due
to change in its position or shape.
It is written as P.E.
Examples of P.E
Energy stored in a stretched or compressed spring or material –
Elastic PE
Examples of P.E
Energy stored within bonding between molecules
chemical PE
Examples of P.E
Energy stored in an object because where it is placed
Gravitational PE
Kinetic Energy , the second type’ Is
moving ”released” energy
Energy in a body due to its motion
It is written as K.E.
Examples of K.E
•Shooting a rubber band.
•Water falling over the fall.
•Releasing arrow from the bow.
•Thermal and electrical energy are good examples for KE.
• Energy can not created or
destroyed or removed, it
can only be change from
one form to another.
• In other words energy can change
forms between kinetic and
potential, but it never disappears.
The total amount of energy is
always the same.
• Changes in the form of
energy …is called:
“Energy Conversions”
The Transformation of Energy
summary
We learned that Energy:
• can be either Potential Energy (PE) or Kinetic Energy (KE)
• is measured in Joules (J)
• comes in different forms:
• Mechanical (from moving objects)
• Chemical (chemical bonds in a substance)
• Thermal (heat energy)
• Electromagnetic (travels through space as waves)
• Sound (travels through air or other matter as waves)
• Nuclear (from nuclear reactions)
• Electrical (electricity)…ext
• We also learned that energy can neither be created or destroyed –
only transformed. This is the Law of Conservation of Energy. The
amount of energy in the universe is constant
Concept checking
 The two main categories of energy are potential and
kinetic.
 Which type of energy increases when you compress a
spring?
energy Can be created or destroyed
Potential energy → Energy that is stored because of position
or shape
Electrical energy → a form of potential energy that is stored
in chemical bonds between atoms
Electrical energy → a form of potential energy that is stored
in chemical bonds between atoms…. Why?
Which type of energy lifted large box?
What form of energy is stored in the nucleus of an atom
Quiz time:
• You will work in groups ( 3 m each group)
• The diagram blow shows the steps involved in using the energy in steam
to generate electricity.
• Use the diagram to help you fill in the blanks in the story in the next slide
with the following terms :mechanical, chemical, heat, light, and electrical.
Some words may be used more than one.
• You have 5 minutes to finish your work
• Write your answers in one sheet for each group.
(1)________energy from gas, oil or coal
provides(2)_________ energy to water to produce
steam. A turbine changes the energy of steam into the
(3)_________ energy of rotating turbine and generator
