3 thread = looks like just simple overlocking on the seams of a garment ( finishes off the seam of a non woven fabric or seams a knit/stretch fabric)) 4 thread = the same as a 3 thread overlock with a line of safety stitching through the centre 5 thread = 4 thread with a chain stitch seam slightly to the left of the overlocked edge. (will eliminate the need for a separate straight stitch seam by normal sewing machine - but can sometimes come undone by pulling thread if not finished properly)
