Portable media is also huge and is enabling kids in schools to to more sophisticated multimedia activities.
Huge trend in society … rise and rise of social software … meaning for educators?? (Jury is still out … you decide!) Quite revolutionary … Web has become 2-way! Kids (and teachers) can now be PRODUCERS as well as ‘consumers’ of information on the web. Ie. Social software is both a ‘push’ technology (authorship process) and a ‘pull’ technology ‘ (viewing process) Leading to new social practices, and social networking. Leading to new ways of self-organisation and collaborative learning!!
Criteria for Thinkquest Comp: Ed value, construction and design, technical performance, COLLABORATION and TEAMWORK, COMMUNITY and GLOBAL CONNECTION NSWDET Annual Web Design Awards for students: http://www.cli.nsw.edu.au/webdesign/introduction.shtm Other exs: Mamamedia Kids creating their own multimedia Kids designing and solving problems using lego microworlds!
Warning: kids have been creating Powerpoint slides since K!! At least upload to a publishing outlet like Slideshare to ‘celebrate’ and ‘talk around’ these ‘digital sand castles’ (e.g. via comments feature
Mmap used in Creative Writing! ALSO Clarify thinking, reinforce new knowledge, integrate new concepts and identfiy alternative conceptions.
Kids as media producers … in tune with a web 2 world…
Collaborative projects - interschool, international. Eg. INK Using web to PUBLISH and COLLABORATE http://www.iml.uts.edu.au/webdev/projects/ink.html
Webquests - research is scaffolded and done in teams. http://webquest.org/index.php
LAMS … being trialled by NSWDET … an example of a ‘Learning Design Authoring System’
Kids as Game makers (rather than just passive consumers)
PUBLISHING! NETWORKING! SCRATCH: http://scratch.mit.edu/ Wonderful example of ed software that allows students to be creative (eg. to make games!) AND PUBLISH AND ‘talk around’ their artefacts!

Should teachers keep a weblog? Try it on prac :-)
Name is based on the Hawaiian term wiki, meaning "quick", "fast", or "to hasten"Online editable webpages … eg. great for team projects & collaborative writing! NB. Recently introduced into UTSOnline too (again, not a fad!) Help build up of ‘social knowledge’ (eg. Wikipedia) Interesting educational tool - allows learners to express themselves with very few constraints - ultimate in freedom and flexibility!
Ex, of many free wiki-like tools available for teachers and students
Online phot sharing - similar phenomena .. Uses a TAG system
Podcasting: “A podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to download or subscribe to, and also the content of that feed.” Eg. radio station broadcasts, TV news, photo or audio bloggers etc. Eg. from California Gov. site: “Podcasting is the latest in on-the-go, on-demand technology bringing the people of California closer in touch with their Governor. With podcasting, you can listen to the Governor's radio programs whenever and wherever you choose. Podcasts are MP3 audio files that are automatically downloaded to your personal computer, and then transferred to an iPod or other MP3 player using a podcasting application.”
Othere xamaples of this ‘create / express / publish / discuss cycle … Small Voices: http://kinderteacher.podomatic.com/ Mention: Warren HS Project!!! (Podcasting) http://warren-central.clients.squiz.net/ 2007 Project with indigenous students there!
Another example of a popular online community
Learning Landscapes … next big thing in social software (or here already?) Community learning and sharing of knowledge.

Traditional Views of Computer (or ICT) in Education (since 1950s - mainstream - 1980s) as: A computional machine An information delivery machine A basic communication tool
Kids FIND and ABSORB facts Learning is solitary and silent. E-Learning: Electronic Question: What new and exciting ‘bells and whistles’ can dazzle my students and how can new technologies make them absorb more information more effciently in order to pass exams. Eg. Maths tutorial software ‘flogged’ in the media!
Computer + associated techs. integrarte as: A communication tool and… An Imagination Machine An Intellectual Lab - a vehicle for big ideas A digital media studio An instrument whose music is ideas A magical box!
Kids DO (often together) Kids DESIGN Kids BUILD Kids PLAY Kids IMAGINE Kids THINK Kids EXPRESS themselves Kids REFLECT
Emphasis on VOICE and AUDIENCE. Collaborative: f2f or Online E-learning as ‘construction’ Eg. using digital cameras, midi instruments, multimedia software, web 2 E-Learning: Enable, Empower and Engage Question: How and when can ICT empower learners to participate actively and thoughtfully in the learning process? How can ICT help learners to think rigorously and express themselves imaginatively? [Pls read Roblyer Ch 3!)
Different types of peer learning
PUBLISHING! NETWORKING! Different types of peer learning ‘through’ the computer Eg. IMAGINATIONCUBED: http://www.imaginationcubed.com/LaunchPage
TEACHERS ARE CRUCIAL!!! Highly complex and challenging ‘art’. Challenging choice of how, when and where to choose appropriate pedagogy, tools, resources etc. And … teachers know their students best!! eg. preconceptions, learning styles etc.!
