As unit 1 environment project

We currently run the EDEXCEL ART, CRAFT AND
DESIGN course. This allows you the freedom to
explore different areas of art, such as painting,
printmaking, textiles, photography, graphical
communication, sculpture and contextual studies.
The course encourages you to create a personal and
imaginative approach.
The course consists of four units over 2 years:
YEAR 12:
UNIT 1-COURSEWORK 50%
UNIT 2-EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT 50%
YEAR 13:
UNIT 3-COURSEWORK (DEVELOPED FROM
PERSONAL STARTING POINT) 60%
UNIT 4-EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT 40%
The Course ...

Throughout year 12 you will be introduced to the
different art disciplines through a series of
workshops. You will be set assignment tasks based
on these workshops, all based around one theme.
For each art discipline you will be expected to use
your own initiative, research artists, primary
images, take good quality photographs and
annotate and review your work.
We are here to guide you, and you are privileged to
have 2 teachers that specialise in different art
disciplines, but we will not do the work for you.
What to Expect… ...

The Year Ahead ...
You will have one project broken down into a series of workshops. Each area will
have a body of work including recording observations,
media experimentation, developing ideas and a final
piece. The project will be completed by January

EXAM PREPERATION AND 10 HOUR EXAM

Getting a good grade is only possible by covering all of the marking criteria. You
can be the most talented artist there is but if you do not have the sketchbook
and work to back up your final pieces you will get very few marks.
You must cover all of the assessment criteria above to get the marks and achieve a good grade.

All basic equipment

be brought to every lesson.

1. Using the title ‘Environments’, take and print at least 20 photographs. It is up
to you how you interpret this title. It may be that you are going on holiday and
use this as your inspiration or it could simply be taking photographs around
your home. Think carefully about your subject matter, colour and composition.

2. From your photographs create a series of A5 drawings.

3. Go to two Art exhibitions over the summer. Take photographs (if you can),
collect leaflets and create drawings. These can go in your sketchbook in
September.
4. Join Pinterest, follow Beaumont and begin to create an album of Art you like.
This will be really helpful when we begin your coursework in September.

Your sketchbook should be a place for being creative! You will explore ideas with sketches, samples,
experiments, Artist’s work and photos relevant to your topic.
Some important things to have in

Planning for final pieces
Presentation: Don’t paint ANY pages with
poster or acrylic paint – this ends up looking messy and really distracts from the artwork on the page.
Do add bits of coloured paper, magazines, newspaper or use watercolour to add colour to the pages. When
adding colour to a page make sure it is relevant to the topic.

Every drawing has something to offer, and no
drawing, or way of drawing will provide a
permanent solution to what drawing is or should
be.
Drawing is the basis of all artwork. On this course,
you’ll be challenged to find your own artistic style
and apply it to your art. We are going to
experiment with a variety of techniques and
explore both traditional and non-traditional styles
of drawing. This will hopefully challenge your
perception of what drawing is and help you
understand how to use a variety of materials.

What to draw? …
You have been given the broad title ‘Environments’
for Unit 1. It is up to you how you interpret this.
Initially you are exploring different techniques so can
keep your idea fairly broad.
Nature provides the most interesting objects to draw
when practicing drawing skills. If possible choose
objects that are flexible, to allow the drawing to be
freed from inhabiting the need to have it absolutely
correct … an old shoe, a pepper cut in two to reveal an
inner world of seeds are two good examples.

Our familiarity with picking up and holding pens for
writing creates a habitual approach to handling them.
Why does a pencil that is used for drawing have to be
held like a pen that is used for writing?
This exercise is essentially about making marks with
varying amounts of control over your drawing. Your aim
is to hold your pencil in four different ways and make at
least five different drawings
Materials
Use a combination of B, 2B, 3B and 4B pencils or graphite sticks on
white cartridge paper. You will also need a long stick to attach your
pencil

One, two or three objects eg: an old boot, half a pepper,
an animal skull etc

be used as a base upon to
continue drawing with
more control or can kept
as a final piece.

Drawing Project: Two Pencils
Materials
Use a combination of B, 2B, 3B and
4B pencils or graphite sticks on white cartridge paper.
Subject
A Single object or a self portrait
By using two pencils bound together, you
will produce a range of dense and
sometimes unpredictable marks that will
provide you with a surface to adjust,
restructure, and work, both with and
against. This drawing provides you with
the opportunity to start by making marks
inside the form, and there by breaking the
habit of using line to draw the outer
contour edge first.

-Complete a minimum of a double page of experimental
line drawings in your sketchbook
-Complete a page on an Artist who creates creative line
drawings.
-Create a series of large line drawings (at least A3 size)
One should use the extended arm technique and one
should use the double pencil technique.

Tonal DrawingsTone refers to the degree
of lightness or darkness
of an area. Tone varies
from the bright white of a
light source through
shades of grey to the
deepest black shadows.
How we perceive the
tone of an object
depends on its actual
surface, lightness,
darkness, colour and
texture.

-Complete 2 sustained A2 tonal drawings
-Complete a page on an Artist who works in black and
white and uses a good range of tone in their Art work
Extra: Create observational tonal drawings in your
sketchbook in a range of media

Mixed Media refers to Artwork
which uses more that one
media to create it. For example
a work on a canvas that
combines paint, ink and collage
would be called Mixed Media

-Create at least one large mixed media drawing
considering shade and tone
-Complete a page on an mixed media Artist
EXTRA: Complete a second mixed media drawing
using brown paper, coffee, tissue paper and conte
(begin to consider your chosen theme. You may want to start to
take photographs)

Chosen Theme
You now need narrow down the theme to make
your project more personal to you. Think about
what interests you, what you like to draw,
photograph, paint etc. It is important that you
choose carefully as you will use this theme for the
rest of your coursework project.

This week……
-Create a double page mood board and a double
page spider diagram on your chosen theme.
-Take at least 40 photographs of your chosen
theme. Print these images and save them onto a
memory stick.

Deadline: 19th
October
This week……
-Print and annotate at least one A3 contact sheet
in your sketchbook (a several A4 contact sheets)
-Create at least two photoshop pages with screen
shots and explanations
-Print at least 2 A3 final photoshop images
-Create A1 board of your original photographs

techniques you can use.
Over the next month
you are going to explore
and experiment with
paint and then create a
final canvas.
Painting Techniques

Consider the different styles in which you might paint.

1. Begin to experiment with acrylic techniques.
Produce at least a double page of techniques and
little samples etc.
2. Complete a double page on an Acrylic Artist
that reflects the technique similar to your own

Half Term……
- Buy a large canvas and bring in a
photograph of your chosen focus to
paint from (you can photoshop your
image if you want but evidence this in
your sketchbook)
EXTRA.... Create an Artist page on an
Artist that relates to your chosen topic,
create further observational drawings
in your sketchbook, add gallery visits
to your sketchbook, take further
photographs for your project

Canvas deadline…
1. Complete a process page and
evaluation of your canvas in
your sketchbook
2. Completed canvas

Personal Project
You have now explored a range
of medias and techniques. Your
next and final part of this unit is
to create your own personal
final piece.

Deadline: 30th
November
This week ……
1. Complete at least a double page (collage) of a range of
Artists work that inspires you. Show a variety of different
media.
2. Complete at least a double page on an Artist relating to
your chosen theme
3. Bring in (or print out images) relating to your chosen theme
to use next week for observational drawing
EXTRA: Take further photographs of your chosen theme (stick
these in your sketchbook)

Deadline: 7th
December
This week ……
1. Complete at least a double page on your visit to the Curwen
print centre. This should include photographs, explanations
and prints
2. Mount at least 2 of your etching from the Curwen as final
outcomes
3. Create a double page on an etching artist
EXTRA: Take further photographs of your chosen theme (stick
these in your sketchbook)

Deadline: 5th
January
Tasks……
1.Complete at least a double page of
four small ideas for your final piece.
The page should be well presented
with clear annotations and opinions
added.
