Staffing is the management activity that
provides for appropriate and adequate
personnel to fulfill the organization’s
objectives.
• The nurse manager decides how many and
what type of personnel are required to
provide care for patients.
3. Staffing is the process of filling jobs with
appropriate persons in an organization. It
concern with human resources of an org.
According to Haimann’’ Staffing relates to the
recruitment, selection, development, training
& compensation of subordinate managers.
4. • Koontz & Weihrich (1990) have defined as ‘
filling and keeping filed positions in the
organization structures’’.
• Staffing depends directly on the workload or
patient care needs. An ideal staffing plan
would provide the appropriate ratio of
caregivers for patients’ individual needs based
on data that predict the census.

staffing: national policy of the line ministry,
org philosophy, availability of human
resource, & fiscal resources of the org affects
the mix & the number of staff.
It is influenced by the system selected to deliver
pt care. For eg., nurse pt ratio.
8. Patient classification for nurse/human resource
staffing:
a. Pt care requirement is influenced by :
capabilities of the pt to care for himself or
herself.
b. Sensory deprivation, if any, with the pt.
c. Acuity of illness
d. Requirement of specific nursing activities.
e. Skill level of nursing required in the care.

the classes of:

• Partial care
• Complete care
10. Principles of staffing are:
The staff in critical care units, operating
rooms, and emergency room should be all
professional nurses.
Plan for nurses in critical care units : 1: 1 nurse
pt ratio in each shift.
In general ward like medical surgical, pediatric,
obstetric etc units at the ratio of 2:1
11. Maintain nurse –pt ratio at 1:5 or 1: 6 during
the day & afternoon shifts & 1:10 for night
shifts.

Recruiting: hiring of qualified people , it is the
process of securing applications to fill the
vacant positions by identifying the
requirements of prospective candidates &
stimulating them to apply for the jobs.

candidates who are to be employed in
particular positions.
Screening is the process of eliminating those
candidates who do not meet the standard by
comparing the qualification of the applicants
with requirements for the jobs.

that candidates applying for some specific
positions possess competencies in knowledge,
skill & attitude required for the job.
• Interviewing is the main methods of
appraising an applicant’s suitability for the job.
