1. Born in Bucharest, she is the only child of Valentin Plătăreanu, a Bucharest actor, and his wife, Doina, a homemaker. When she was four (in 1983) her family decided to flee to West Germany to escape Nicolae Ceauşescu's regime in Communist Romania. Although the family had originally planned to emigrate to Canada, they settled down in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, before eventually moving to Berlin. After graduating at the Französisches Gymnasium Berlin in 1997, she went on studying acting under the management of her father, co-founder of the Theaterwerkstatt Charlottenburg, until 2000. Career By age sixteen she was already playing lead roles in various television dramas. Since then her career has developed and she has become a respected film actress.Her most famous role to date, which has resulted in international recognition, is as Traudl Junge, Adolf Hitler's secretary, in the Oscar-nominated 2004 film Der Untergang (Downfall) . Due to her convincing performance in Der Untergang , Francis Ford Coppola wrote her a letter and gave her a leading role in Youth Without Youth (2007). In 2007 she also appeared as journalist Annik Honoré in the film Control , the Ian Curtis biopic. In 2008, she served as a member of the Cannes Film Festival jury. She played a lead role in Greek director Theo Angelopoulos's 2008 film The Dust of Time , opposite Irène Jacob and Bruno Ganz. More recently, she appeared in The Reader and Der Baader Meinhof Komplex which were both nominated for the 81st Academy Awards (best picture and best foreign language film, respectively). She's married to actor Sam Riley with whom she acted in the movie Control . 3. He was born at 27 aprilie in 1968, Iaşi. He is a Romanian filmmaker, winner of the Palme d'Or in 2007. After studying English literature at the University of Iaşi, he worked for a few years as a teacher and as a journalist. After that, he enrolled at the University of Film in Bucharest to study film directing. After graduating in 1998, he made several short films. In 2002, he debuted with his first feature film, Occident. Occident enjoyed critical success, winning prizes in several film festivals and being featured in Director’s Fortnight at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. In 2007 wrote and directed his second feature, “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”. The film was received enthusiastically, attracting critical praise and being selected in the official competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, where it eventually won the coveted Palme d'Or for feature film, marking the first time that prize was awarded to a Romanian filmmaker. He has said that early Milos Forman and Robert Altman are important filmmakers who influenced him. He also respects the realism of "the Bicycle Thief", among other famous realistic films. In the English-speaking world, she is probably best known for the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ . In Romania, she has been nationally known since her 1992 role as “Nela” in “ Balanţa” , a film known in the United States as “ The Oak”. Born in Bucharest, in a Jewish family, she graduated from the Film and Theatre Academy of Bucharest in 1985. She then played at Youth Theater in Piatra Neamţ until 1988, and at the State Jewish Theatre in Bucharest 1988-1990. From 1990–1998 she was a member of the company of the National Theatre in Bucharest, and since 1998 of Teatrul Bulandra. Among her notable stage roles in recent years, in a Romanian-language production of “ The Blue Angel” at Bucharest's Odeon Theater, in 2001-2 she played (to great critical acclaim) Lola Lola, the character made famous by Marlene Dietrich. At the same time, she was also playing the role of Kathleen Hogan in a Romanian-language production of Israel Horovitz's “ Park Your Car in Harvard Yard” at the State Jewish Theater. She has appeared in numerous films, primarily in Hungarian and Romanian-language roles. In “ The Passion of the Christ” , she performs a role in Aramaic, but like the other actors in the cast of that film, she simply memorized her lines phonetically. Her surname, means "Morning Star" in German, a title of the Virgin Mary, the character she played in “ The Passion of the Christ” . Mel Gibson, a devout Traditionalist Catholic, thought this of great significance when casting her. In interviews, she has defended The Passion against allegations of antisemitism, saying that the high priest Caiaphas is portrayed not as a representative of the Jewish people, but as a leader of the establishment, adding that "Authorities throughout history have persecuted individuals with revolutionary ideas." She has been married twice, and has 3 children: Tudor Aaron, Eva Leea Cabiria and Ana Isadora.
