Apache Olingo - from Incubation to a real Olingo (Apache TLP)

The Apache Olingo project actual contains Java and JavaScript libraries which provided development support for the realization of an OData service as a server in addition to support for consuming an OData service as client. Before the Apache Olingo project started there was an earlier Open Source project from which we learnt that it’s best to start from scratch and thereby avoid failures from the past. By starting afresh, we could do everything better than before. This is how the Apache Olingo was born.

For a long time I have been reluctant to actively contribute to an open source project. I thought it would be rather complicated and demanding – and that I didn't have the knowledge or skills for it or at the very least that they (the project team) weren't waiting for me. In December 2021, I decided to have a serious input into the Dapr.io project – and now finally to determine how it works and whether it is really that complicated. In this session I want to tell you about my experiences. How Fork, Clone, Branch, Push (and PR) is the rhythm of contributing to an open source project and how you do that (these are all Git actions against GitHub repositories). How to learn how such a project functions and how to connect to it; which tools are needed, which communication channels are used. I tell how the standards of the project – largely automatically enforced – help me to become a better software engineer, with an eye for readability and testability of the code. How the review process is quite exciting once you have offered your contribution. And how the final "merge to master" of my contribution and then the actual release (Dapr 1.6 contains my first contribution) are nice milestones. I hope to motivate participants in this session to also take the step yourself and contribute to an open source project in the form of issues or samples, documentation or code. It's valuable to the community and the specific project and I think it's definitely a valuable experience for the "contributer". I looked up to it and now that I've done it gives me confidence – and it tastes like more (I could still use some help with the work on Dapr.io, by the way).

The Apache community creates the building blocks of software companies world wide. Developers designing those building blocks require a different mindset than developers focused on building applications. Good building blocks can be repurposed, reused, and recomposed. Good building blocks are modular. This talk focus on building good blocks in Java using current language features, frameworks (Apache Felix), and prepare for new modularity features available in Java 9. This talk will cover when it makes sense to break a project down further as well as some of the strategies and tools involved in doing so. Modeling languages are generally applied for developing systems and software – both internally, with domain-specific languages, and with standardized languages targeting a general purpose and a wide audience. Way too often these languages are weakly created and defined leading to poor quality: Language definitions tend to contain errors and inconsistencies; notations do not recognize the communication and problem-solving needs of humans; standardization organizations push exchange formats that do not fully work and offer certificates that do not measure mastery of the language. We describe common problems in language development and point them out with examples from known cases. To overcome these problems, we suggest several solutions to improve language development, including using modeling languages specifically designed to define modeling languages, continuous testing and prototyping, and keeping language users in the loop.
