Mounted Police help reduce criminal activity such as theft of motor cars, theft from motor cars, burglaries, drug related crimes, street drag racing, and traffic offences. The main reason for their success is the fact that the mounted police are extremely visible and obvious. Crowd control The mounted police help control things with big crowds and sporting events such as soccer and football matches, also the Formula 1 Grand Prix, also any other events where large crowds gather. Searches The mounted police is regularly used to help searches for missing or wanted people or evidence. Because the police are mounted on horses they can travel a lot further and go across difficult terrain that vehicles couldn’t cross. This is extremely helpful when trying to find missing people. Ceremonial duties The branch still perform some ceremonial and traditional duties such as walking in the ANZAC day parade and the Grand Final parade, they also appear at police funerals.
5. Reasons for existence The reason the mounted police was started was because in the 1800’s they didn’t have cars and they needed a way to catch criminals and get around fast. The branch is still around today because of the agility and versatility of the horses which is useful in so many different ways.
