SoundCloud and DropBox have an easier learning cur ves and are integrated in a number of apps. *With a SoundCloud account it’s possible to allow other people to send you audio files. - (Before Class suggest that students bring smart phone or recorder, headphones or earphones.)\nIntroduction\nIts become really easy both record audio or video and then either upload and publish online (“1- Step Publishing”) or to record, edit and process in some way then upload and publish (“2- Step Publishing”). The quality and relative ease of recording from mobile devices makes it possible to create great quality location based content. It has the further advantage of being able to share or publish immediately. If you have a smart phone the cost too is effectively ‘free’.\nWe will cover very basic microphone and interviewing technique, recording on Smart phone or laptop, and publishing online (1-step)\nI will include an overview of editing and processing (2-step) with suggestion of apps and software but detailed coverage of these areas is outside the scope of this session. I will not cover technical aspects of mics and audio recording, speech editing techniques, or post production processing. I will provide sources of further information. \n

- Live streaming (Direct Publishing)\nIt’s possible to live stream (directly publish) audio from your mobile device or Computer.\nFrom Desktop Browser (http://flipzu.com/) and phone app such as FlipZu (£0). Or just Desktop Browser only based app such as Chirbit http://flipzu.com/). Both are fully connected to social media such as Twitter, FB or SoundCloud. Chirbit also adds Tumblr integration but lacks a smart phone app but utilises iPhones Voice Memos iApp. \nFlipZu integrates easily with Twitter and actually looks like Twitter too. You can use you Twitter or FB login.\n
- Recording audio \nUse of microphones.\nUse the built in Phone mic - Get close but not too close\nMicrophone technique - move the mic to the speaker(s)\nSome Apps let you set the audio level ie BlueFiRe and FiRe. Record the interview at a level as high as possible without it ‘peaking’ too high. FiRe and TwistedWave also allow ‘monitoring’ - you can hear the sound as its being recorded. “Play Through”.\nUse an external mic - some need external power. Beware of handling noise. A self build (http://youtu.be/k90FsGSTu1U) lead allows a powered mic to be plugged in. Great quality. Probably looks more ‘pro’ when interviewing. But with careful use the earphone mic can be used for solo recording and performs quite well. The iPhone seems to have an automatic level that doesn’t ‘pump’ the volume noticeably. If the mic level is too low it switches to the internal mic. This gives the impression that unpowered mics work when in fact they don’t.\n\n
- One step publishing (all Apps will also auto post to Twitter)\nSoundCloud App (£0) will allow you to record and upload to SoundCloud as well as Tumblr. But there is no editing and you can’t upload a file from outside the app. You can add a photo from the Camera roll, which could be useful. Full frame on iPad.\nTumblr App (£0) No meter, you can’t set the recording level so the SoundCloud is a better bet. Max file size 10MB.\nThe AudioBoo App (£0) will record and upload. Duration is limited to 3min. \n(Vimeo/Camera App (£0) these are video apps but post to Vimeo or Youtube. Both will allow you to download and rip the audio if that’s what you want. Can either be set up to auto Tweet? Vimeo will allow you to trim - and thats actually quite useful.\nVoice Memo App (£0) comes with iPhone. You can’t set the recording level, the quality. Exports via iTunes (the Voice Memo playlist) and email. Not clever.\nGriffin iTalk App (£0) is great but limited to 3 unspecified qualities. It’s .aff format so quite good and suited to Macs. Export is only email or via iTunes. iPhone only.\nBlue FiRe App (£0) is neat. The £4 ‘Pro’ FiRe adds editing and export via iTunes, Browser, (Pro - SoundCloud (private and public) and DropBox). But you can’t directly post to Tumblr or tweet. However you can AUTOPOST to both from SoundCloud - with all the dangers that includes. iPhone only.\n
- Transferring your recordings from a smart phone to Computer.\niTunes. Apps that support this: FiRe, GarageBand, iTalk and TwistedWave. Shame SoundCloud doesn’t. I don’t like iTunes much. Its worth changing the default action for audio files so that they don’t automatically open in this sprawling illogical application.\nVia wifi and a Browser (Safari). I really like this way I suspect its faster than USB and doesn’t require a lead. TwistedWave, and FiRe offer Browser or Bonjour transfer (easy with Safari) as well as upload to DropBox. You HAVE to be on the SAME network.\nEmail seems to be standard with all. You could configure Posterous and Tumblr to accept email posting. Then auto post onto Twitter.\n
- Direct Publishing\nEditing level −1: you have very little control here! Not even the ability to choose to Publish!\n1 - Step Publishing\nEditing level 0: Publish original recording direct from Mobile device.\n2 - Step Publishing\nEditing level 1: “Top ’n’ tail” to turn around quickly - trim start and ending.\nEditing level 2: Quick edit to tidy up - also remove repetition, mistakes and unwanted comments.\nEditing level 3: Edit interview - structure answers - important first. Tighten up sound bites. \nEditing level 4: Mix several tracks add FX or music.\nRemember - legal and representational issues with editing; deformation, slander, misrepresentation and music copyright.\n\n\n
- Editing audio - on smart phone (all Apps include file processing and ‘sweetening’):\nFiRe (£4) is my preferred audio recording and editing App. Uploads to SoundCloud\nTwisted Wave Audio Editor (£3) Full screen on iPad. Yay! Uploads to SoundCloud too.\n1st Video (£6.99) for multitrack. For video or separate audio. Exports via email and private/public SoundCloud. Poss full frame on iPad.\n\nAlso worth mentioning is Garageband (£2.99). You can record directly into it and edit the audio etc. Output is via email and iTunes via plug in and wirelessly.\n
- Editing on laptop/desktop (you can record directly into all of these with the right leads etc): \n1. Audacity (£0) (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) If you want to export to MP3 you will need a free plugin called ‘lame’ http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3 . Not multi track.\nFree ‘no settings’ sweetening the sound “The Levelator” (http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator) works very well for voice only. It’s quick too.\n2. GarageBand (£2.99) \n3. Sound Studio (£20) - Multitrack high level audio editor on App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sound-studio/id405537804?mt=12).\n
- SoundCloud account the App too while basic but rather good, even better on the iPad.\nRecording App - FiRe at £4 it’s a real bargain. You can monitor the interview as you record it which is very valuable. You can apply processing and noise reduction as you record monitoring in almost real time.\nIf you are serious then an external mic would seem sensible.\nAudacity/GarageBand on Desktop. Garageband is fabulous on the iPad.\n
- SoundCloud (you can collect audio file&#x2019;s with the SoundCloud drop box. Effectively publishing them on your SoundCloud account. - Content\nFind a good location to interview\nGet a good S/N ratio\nFind a good interviewee \nThe Interviewee/Presenter tells us something or adds to your knowledge.\n5 questions - Who, what, where, why and How? \n\n\n
- Remember Short content is King\nThink about how the interviewee will be &#x2018;introduced&#x2019; when you use the clip. Establishing who you are talking to or have talked to is important. It is also worth establishing why they are worth listening to. Make sure you can spell their name correctly. \nWill you edit your questions out later? \nAre you just looking for a &#x2018;sound bite&#x2019; If so make sure that the sound bites work without the question.\nAvoid asking questions that can be answered by &#x201C;yes&#x201D; or &#x201C;no&#x201D;. They will be!\nAsk a warm up question (to check level and relax your interviewee)\nDon&#x2019;t interrupt, talk over or uh ha\nIf planning to edit, don&#x2019;t ask the most important question first \nCollect interviewees contact details\nThe more you record the longer your edit. Record some &#x2018;atmos&#x2019;. If you listen to Radio 4 etc you will often hear some audio from the location just before the interview starts. This can be helpful to set the scene. It can also be good to add to the edited interview to make the whole thing sound smoother and more &#x2018;in the moment&#x2019;. Keep the atmos levels low to avoid losing intelligibility\n
