“I’ve had an eclectic career. I provided customer and sales support for a construction
machinery’s rep, served as a bilingual interpreter, a workshop facilitator/job coach and a
domestic violence advocate. Each job shared the common feature of providing no retirement

I spent the last year working as a captive agent at a traditional life insurance company. I had to
drive 45 minutes each way to the office 3-5 days per week, plus 1.5 to 2 hours in all directions for
appointments. One of the most difficult parts of my job was getting people to let me come to
their home. Even if that wasn't a problem, it was hard to get a commitment to a time and date,
which led to lots of rescheduled or cancelled appointments. Most reps stayed less than a year.
I learned many things during my time at that company, but one of the most important things I
