The site is a wooded valley which was supposed to be left as a green lung in the master plan of the 200-hectare university campus. The designer, however, carved a habitat from the constraints of the valley. And instead of imposing a building onto the landscape, we let the landscape plays a critical role in moulding the building. It allows the original greenery of the site to creep and colonise the building, creating “non-building” in the overall setting. The building design challenges the traditional linear system of education with a clear teacher-student arrangement. Here, we create different types of spaces – from the formal auditorium seating to the more informal studios, lobbies, passageways and breakout lounges. There are also cosy outdoor corners, a sunken plaza formed by the embracing arms of the building and the turfed roofs.Together, these provide a variety of spaces for students to interact, explore and learn as well as display their creative works.A unique feature of the building is its transparency and connectivity – both within the interior spaces and with the external environment. There is a great sense of continuity in the interior – right from the entrance to the main foyer to various spaces inside and right into the turfed roofs. Internal glass walls enhance this visual connectivity and flow, allowing one to see beyond rooms thus promoting interaction and creative exchange. As this is an art school, it was decided to give it a very raw feel. The designers deliberately left a lot of surfaces, both indoors and outdoors, unfinished. These unfinished surfaces as empty canvasses suggest possibilities, where the art students can use them as giant billboards to express their youthful creativities.

WHAT MAKES THE PROGRAM UNIQUE?This assemblage of projects is not a fashion show showcasing the ‘look’ of the building. This program searches the globe for examples of innovation that remind us why school buildings and campuses exist in the first place: learning! More importantly, we focus how we design for the ever-changing future of learning and larger community connections.Since 2000, the program has been doing this by challenging traditional standards and committing to learner-centered, cost-efficient and sustainable learning environments. It has documented hundreds of innovative school designs from 20 countries — all available online.
1. The designer was given a challenge to design a building that symbolizes what an art, design and media school stands for; uniqueness and creativity. And that is what the University got; a building which is iconic and one which epitomizes originality. With its bare concrete and glass curtain walls and verdant roof, the building certainly stands apart from the other school buildings within the campus and this has gone down well with the academics and students who, as design practitioners crave for an environment that is conducive for creative exploration and exchange of ideas.2. Making a design that blends in w landscape than dominate it. Being a ADM sch, sch has to have a distinctive architecture 3. Most challenging aspect was construction of roof, approximately 10,000 sqmConventionally a turfed roof requires soil as a growing medium and extent of its coverage would impose heavy loads on building structure and foundations. Architects devised unique turfing system

This is the enlarged master floor plan detailing the building facilities, note the grey area consist of the cooling room, the central area is the sunken plaza, white area is the auditorium. A lot of greenery surrounding the structure, indeed a building that blends into the environment.
From the building cross section you can see that every space within the building is fully utilized and not restricted by the building form.

The transparency of the glass life allow it to connect with the spaces within the building. Energy can also be reduced on the lighting of the lift as light shines in from outside.

Steel framing is used to support to glass framing of the building as it is known for its strength and ductility against high wind loads. Steel also has the highest strength-to-weight ratio in order to keep the building as light as possible.
made of steel membersThe flange, the reinforcing member and the connector are integrally joined together via a connecting fastener member.
The use of steel, concrete and timbre to fit the building’s concept of ‘flirting with the landscape’. The bar concrete pillars and walls are left bare to allow students to design and decorate their own school. The use on concrete as the building core allows design flexibility for any interior and exterior finishes. This is because concrete can be manipulated to fit any shape or curves. Timbre gives a luxurious effect and it is also resistant to heat and corrosion.
The entire composite section as thick as 150mm.ZoysiaMatrella grass chosen as it can withstand heavy downpour. It is commonly used for golf courses. The landscapers also used extra bracing on the roofs to prevent shearing of the steep roof. The green roof of ADM is considered the first in Southeast Asia to build a grass roof on a steep slope as much as 45 degrees. Below the grass roof is a preformed single-ply waterproofing membrane to ensure water tightness to the roof. Rain sensors are adopted on green roof to ensure that irrigation ceased when it is raining.
The air con system are place high up in the building such that the warm air will be cooled faster as warm air rises and cold air sinks. Building operates from a central air conditioning system uses one unit to heat the entire building. The rooms are connected with a series of ducts and individual openings or registers in each room.Type One air con register blah blah (read from the slide)Type Two air con register – openings at the side walls, to reach places with tall ceilings ensure constant cooling effect within the building.
he glass façade provides a high performance building envelope that reduces solar gain and heat load while allowing the benefits of natural views and daylight into creative spaces. The glass walls provide a visual exchange between indoors and out allowing students and teachers to experience the building, the surrounding landscape and the interior plaza as fluid spaces. Diffused natural daylight is abundant throughout studios and classrooms, filtered through the surrounding foliage.

The curving green roofs distinguish the building from among the other structures on campus but the line between landscape and building is blurred. The roofs serve as informal gathering spaces challenging linear ideas and stirring perception. The roofs create open space, insulate the building, cool the surrounding air and harvest rainwater for landscaping irrigation. Planted grasses mix with native greenery to colonize the building and bond it to the setting.

Finishes are intentionally raw to act as a backdrop for the art, media and design projects. Concrete walls and columns, cement-sand screeded floors, timber railings and a neutral palette define the interior spaces which vary in shape and size. This amazing design seems to offer a new experience at every elevation or perspective fulfilling the intent that a school for art should inspire creativity.

The unfolding arms of 2 blocks create a welcoming entry court to the school. The double volume entry porch provides a sheltered drop-off for cars which is a necessary feature in this tropical climate. A landscaped round-about in this entry court provides a soft contrast to the predominantly glass and concrete surfaces in this area.
Adm definitely has many interesting twist that makes it different and unique from other building. It has a very green landscape garden and from here we can see that adm had retain the green characteristic of this site even after the woods had been removed to make way for the schoolThe highlight of the building that will catch the attention of people is the angle green roof that weave in and out from the ground, The roofs serve as informal gathering spaces challenging linear ideas and stirring perception. Last but not least we have the sleek glass curtain wall coupled with off form concrete walls for a natural finish. The design concept was to make adm to integrate to part of the surroundings and not to overwhelm the surrounding. So it makes people think that is it part of the landscape or is it a building, the line between the two is blurred.

This also means students have been provided with the perfect platform to express themselves by adorning the surfaces of the building with their works thus allowing the building to evolve its own identity.

Lighting plays an important aspect to the building. The full expanse of high performance glass lets in daylight to the studios and galleries while cutting off the tropical heat. In the evening, the building glows like a lantern. The interiors of the building are lit and the activities within are fully exposed to view. The exterior glass façade of the building allows full views to the outside, again providing visual connectivity with the surrounding lush landscape. Lights are incorporated onto the roof to allow students to meet in the evening as well. At night, the building glows like a lantern allowing activities of the school to be observed from the outside. The changing character of the façade lends dynamism, life and interest to the building as day transforms into night.
