2. WHAT IS POKÉMON TCG
You are a Pokémon Trainer! You travel across the land, battling other Trainers
with your Pokémon, creatures that love to battle and that have amazing
powers.
BECOME A POKÉMON MASTER!
These rules will tell you everything you need to play the Pokémon TCG.
Your deck of cards represents your Pokémon as well as items and allies
that help you on your adventures.
Trading card games are strategy based and use collectible cards to let
each player customize his or her game. The best way to learn to play the
Pokémon TCG is with a Trainer Kit. This has two ready-to-play decks that
walk you through the game, step by step. From there, try a theme deck to
get an idea of the different kinds of decks out there.

9. STARTING THE GAME
Each player has his or her 30 card deck with each player
having equal number of Energy and Trainer cards. To start
the game, each player does the following:
Keeps his Energy Cards in the Energy Pile, the Trainer
Cards in the Trainer Pile and the Pokémon Cards in the
Deck.
Draws 7 cards from the Deck, selects one of them as the
Active Pokémon, and puts up to 5 more on the bench for
later use.
Flips a coin to decide the starting player.
10. PARTS OF A TURN
The starting player selects an attack from his Active Pokémon.
He checks the amount of Energy required to power that attack (
Written before the attack ).
He attaches that amount of Energy Cards to his Pokémon (Any
energy works for Colorless Energy and Colorless Energy works
for any energy.
If needed he also plays a Trainer Card.
If the cards in his hand are over, he plays a card from the bench
or draws 7 more cards from the deck and plays one of them.
If his Active Pokémon is knocked out during the last turn, he
plays another card from his hand or the Bench
11. OTHER PARTS OF THE GAME
Winning The Game
A player wins the game when all the opponents cards are knocked
out, when the opponent has to draw more cards than he has or
when the opponent can’t play a card.
Sudden Death
If both players win at the same time then they play a short game which
has only 5 cards in the deck.
Evolving
If you have a card in your hand which is the next stage of the active
Pokémon, you should replace the active Pokémon with the
Pokémon in your hand and remove all damage counters from the
active Pokémon.
12. SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Paralyzed-When your Pokémon is paralyzed, you flip a coin. If heads,
your Pokémon recovers from paralysis but if tails the Pokémon goes in
the discard pile.
Burned- When your Pokémon is burned, you flip a coin. If heads put 3
damage counters on that Pokémon and if tails your Pokémon
recovers.
Confused-When your Pokémon is confused, you flip a coin. If heads
put 2 damage counters on that Pokémon and if tails your Pokémon
recovers.
Poisoned-When your Pokémon is poisoned, you flip a coin. If heads
put 1 damage counter on that Pokémon and if tails your Pokémon
recovers.
Asleep- When your Pokémon is asleep, you flip a coin. If tails your
Pokémon recovers but if heads you cannot attack.
