Sadness is a normal, human
emotion that will occur
throughout a persons life in
response to appropriately
sad events.

Sadness is typically
attributable to a situation.

Depression, on the other
hand, is a persistent mental
health condition that
interferes ones overall sense
of well-being and day-to-day
functioning.

Like sadness, a painful life
experience can trigger it, but
unlike sadness, depression is
persistent, unrelenting, and
effects how you feel, think
and behave.

Symptoms of depression include:
- Low energy / fatigue
- Difficulty focusing
- Decreased libido
- Feelings of emptiness, sadness,
or guilt
- Withdrawal from others
- Changes in sleep and appetite
- Feelings of hopelessness or
helplessness
- Thoughts of suicide

adults, or 6.7 percent of the U.S. population over 18 years of
