THE CREATIVE BRIEF
To bring a voice and humanize the experience of incarcerated
blacks, we are injecting life and breath into their words. By
creating an emotional reader experience in the form of a tangible
artifact, we will give a voice to those who have been targeted by
the system. This provides relatable material from real prisoners
that have been silenced, marginalized, and brought to the brink
of their own humanity. Our three directions provide the audience
with an emotional tie towards a better understanding of the text.

BREAKING THE CYCLE
The Prison Industrial Complex siphons Black Americans into a
system that profits from their continuous cyclical involvement.
PIC impairs the ability of prisoners to reintegrate on the outside.
Breaking the Cycle focuses on a cyclical visual framework that
parallels this quality. Interruption of continuous and repetitive
visual motifs is important in navigating the reader through
narrative content.

CROSSING LINES
It is accepted by general society to extract our criminal offenders
from their communities and strip them of their rights and
opportunities. With every act of punishment within the United
States Prison Industry Complex we black list and marginalize their
growth. This crosses the lines of fair and just treatment.
Crossing Lines concentrates on constructing a visual language
based on those individual violations. Provocative and aggressive
imagery will relate the reader to the imprisoned voices with a sense
of urgency.

CAGED THOUGHT
We look at prisoners as a product within a system rather than
a person of society. Freedoms and rights of our prisoners are
stripped away through violent retaliatory treatment. Silenced
behind bars, their thoughts become caged within a black hole.
Currently, the system is focused on controlling prisoners rather
than their rehabilitation. This direction compares the format of
a book to that of a prison cell. Closed, these places withhold their
contents from the world. As this book is opened, their cell
is opened, and their thoughts are freely shared.
