and pioneer in sustainable fish farming operations, is exhibiting its new OMRI‐Listed 'Fish Rich Organic 2‐2‐2
Fertilizer' at both the CENTS Marketplace in Columbus, OH, Jan 14‐16, and Green & Growin Trade Show in
Greensboro, NC, Jan. 17‐18. The announcement is made by Norman McCowan, president of Bell Aquaculture,
who says, "Fish have been used as soil fertilizer since the Native Americans first began farming our nearby land
centuries ago. Our organic plant fertilizer, currently marketed as Fish Rich, is made from the remains of the
Bell Perch™ Yellow Perch processed at our aquaculture facility in Indiana."
CENTS Marketplace, sponsored by the Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association, kicks off the is the industry's

Made from toxin‐ and mercury‐free fish, Fish Rich has a very mild fish odor and is good for any soil. Fish Rich
contains these three major nutrients:
 Nitrogen – to promote green leaves, and quicker growth response.
 Phosphorous – for root growth, disease resistance, promoting seed and fruit growth, and for
blooming and flowering.
 Potassium – to increase root growth, and offer disease and drought resistance. Fish Rich is also a
good source of calcium — which plants need for cell wall development and growth. Pathogens attack
weak cell walls to invade a plant, and a stronger cell wall structure will play a big part in avoiding this
potential problem.

Fish Rich is made on‐site at Bell Aquaculture's Redkey, IN, processing facility. The fertilizer building houses a
5,000 square foot production floor and a state‐of‐the‐art lab set‐up to handle special orders for custom blends
of fertilizer as well. "Our fertilizer lab and production facility can specially produce most any fertilizer design a
customer deems necessary ‐‐ any grade or level," McCowan said.
Heartland Growers, Inc., Tests Fish Rich on Poinsettias
The use of Fish Rich 2‐2‐2 Organic as a primary fertilizer on poinsettias was trialed at Heartland Growers, Inc.
(Westfield, IN), from early September through the end of November 2012. The project was led by Heartland's
Young Plant Specialist Ben Matthews, who says the common fertilizer formula and a volume to weight
conversion factor were used to obtain 250 ppm of nitrogen for the trial (specific formulation for the study is
available on request).
Matthews recounts: "Initially the fertilizer was applied continuously. During the second week of October and
proceeding, the fertilizer was applied at every‐other irrigation, or about twice per week. Finally, during the
month of November, the Fish Rich was applied once per week. Basically, frequency of fertilizer application
was reduced as the poinsettias matured and thus did not require as much fertilizer. It should be disclaimed
that while no other fertilizer than Fish Rich was purposely applied; there is a chance that the poinsettias
received a minute amount of the regular poinsettia feed at Heartland Growers. It should also be noted that
there was an initial charge in the substrate before Fish Rich was applied‐ although this too, was minute. The
results were still quite distinguishable.
"Overall, the results were impressive ‐ especially in terms of the rich color of the modified bracts. The
cultivars tested were: ‘Prima’, ‘Whitestar’, ‘Mars Pink’, and ‘Euroglory Red’. In each case of the two red
cultivars along with the white and pink, the color was deeper than their counterparts not treated with Fish
Rich. Another notable result was the 2‐2‐2 regiment had a growth regulating effect on the poinsettias. None
of the poinsettias being trialed with Fish Rich exhibited any symptoms of nutrient deficiency or toxicity."
