2. • ...Is seen over the angels, and all creation.
Hebrews 1:4-14
• Angels were an important part of the
Hebrew religion. Deut. 33:2; Psalm 68:17;
Acts 7:53
• Let us look at how Christ is supreme and
therefore much better than the angels.
3. Jesus is The “Son”
• Two prophecies show the Messiah as Son.
– Jehovah calls Messiah, “My Son”…
Ps. 2:7; Acts 13:33; Romans 1:4
– In 2 Samuel 7:14a there is an immediate
application to Solomon.
• But the Messiah would also descend from
David and would receive the ultimate throne
and kingdom.
Mt. 1:1; Mark 10:47; John 7:42
• But no angel is ever called “My son”.
4. Jesus is the “Firstborn,” Who
Receives Worship
• Jesus is described as the “firstborn”.
• This term here means first in
priority/importance, not born first.
– God used this term to describe Israel over the
world. Exodus 4:22
– Used by God to refer to David the youngest of
eight. Psalm 89:20, 27
– It is used of Jesus to stress His preeminence
over creation. Colossians 1:15-18
5. Jesus is the “Firstborn,” Who
Receives Worship
• When Jesus came into the world the
angels were to worship Him. Heb. 1:6
– Angels refused to be worshiped – Rev. 22:8-9
– Peter refused worship. Acts 10:25-26
• Yet, Jesus received worship.
– Mt. 2:11; 8:2; 9:18; 14:33; 15:25; Jn. 9:38;
Mt. 28:9, 17; Luke 24:52
• Jesus is worthy of worship, because
He is…
6. Jesus is God
Enthroned and Anointed
• Angels are simply for the service of God.
Heb. 1:14, 7
• But the Son is God Himself, enthroned
and anointed! Psalm 45:6-7; Heb. 1:8, 3a
– We note the deity of Jesus.
• He reigns over an everlasting kingdom
with righteousness. Daniel 2:44; Luke
1:33, 26
– Paul and John wrote about this kingdom.
Col. 1:13; Rev. 1:9; Heb. 1:9; 2:11; 3:1
7. Jesus is the “Lord” Who is
the Eternal Creator!
• Jesus is Yahweh, “Jehovah”! Ps. 102:25-27
• This Psalm uses God’s covenant name and
applies it here to Jesus. Exodus 3:13-14;
Heb. 1:9
• Jesus is the Eternal Creator. He created
everything in the beginning. Heb. 1:10, 2c
– John and Paul write about this… John 1:3;
Colossians 1:16-17
• He is also eternal and unchangeable.
Heb. 1:11-12; 2 Peter 3:10-12; Heb. 13:8
8. Jesus is the “Sovereign”
• No angel is invited to sit at God’s right hand.
• But Jesus the Son is invited. Heb. 1:13-14;
Psalm 110:1
– This refers to Christ’s Messianic reign.
Hebrews 1:3; Acts 2:34-36; 1 Peter 3:22
• Angels are but ministering spirits. Heb. 1:14
• They minister for those who will inherit
salvation. Lk. 1:11-38; Mt. 13:36-43;18:10
• Very forcefully the Hebrews writer has
shown that Jesus is superior to the angels.
