The Lync that we know and love today can trace its roots all the way back to the Microsoft Office Live Communications Server originally released in 2003.
The server software took on the name Microsoft Lync in 2010, which was also the last year it received a major overhaul.
That changed with the release of Microsoft Lync Server 2013.
It has already proven itself to be the most popular version of the communications platform ever released, mostly due to its easy-to-use interface and long list of functions.
Microsoft Lync 2013 is quickly becoming the most popular UC solution in the world, especially here in the USA where almost 75% of companies already have or have plans trial Microsoft Lync!

What was just a “nice to have” tool is now a critical application that requires:
Availability
Exceptional performance for your users across multiple locations
End-User Satisfaction and utilization to justify the cost
Cost control on data and bandwidth

QoS - Lync 2010 & 2013
QoS: not implemented correctly or not everywhere in the company sites
Make sure the network team is on board with the Lync team
VM Hosts:
The machine running the Lync VMs. Team managing should work through the whitepaper, as Microsoft specified.
Make sure:
- Network cards have VM queing enabled
driver on host supports that
packets from the network in the lync machine in a best timely fashion
No dynamic memory ! if they need more, they need more immediately
SQL Performance
SQL Team treats Lync as any DB application. Lync does NOT. Real time app. Needs to go quickly to database.
Need to work closely with the SQL team to make sure the performance of the SQL (disk, CPU, RAM) are high enough. Do not want the SPROC to run more than in a few milliseconds.
Edge server.
Machine in DMZ, so security wants to protect them. They put NAT so that the external IP address is not routable. Lync supports one NAT and ONE NAT only. HLB counts as a NAT device, so then need to use real IP address.
Do not violate the double NAT rule.
If you want to NAT, remove HLB, use DNS load balancing. Make sure you communicate the trade off: federate with old version of Lync (OCS).
Lync 2013 Front End Performance issues
Front-edn server disk performance. Not issue in 2010, but issue on 2013. Because it used to rely on the SQL. Now much more data on the SQL Express running on the FE server. Therefore needs better performance on the front-end server.

Monitoring
Need to ensure quality of service
Be able to provide reports
Be alerted before user complaints
Lync monitoring Role
What time during the day do we have the most conference calls?
For a certain voice call, was the caller leveraging the VPN or calling from inside the organization?
What codec was being leveraged for a particular conference call?
What is the average roundtrip latency for Lync calls?

To speak about some of our customers, we provide monitoring for companies like HSBC, Boeing and Johnson Controls. However the size of the company does not matter, what matters is how critical the environment is.

So the focus of the webinar today will be on how GSX Monitors & Reports on Microsoft Lync environments but that is not the only platform that we can help you manage…
