One of the key challenges in modelling GW-SW interactions is the significant time-scale differences between surface water and groundwater processes. Because groundwater movement can be orders of magnitude slower than surface water movement, the responses of groundwater systems to hydrological and management drivers such as climate variability, land use change, and groundwater extraction can be very damped and lagged. Hence, a key requirement in modelling GW-SW interactions in river system models is to account for these time lags. The modelling of GW-SW interactions in river system models is still very much in its infancy, not just in Australia, but also throughout the world. As such, there is no consensus on implementation of this functionality in river system models, and hence the little discussion in the literature so far on what constitutes Best Practice Modelling in this domain.

Everyone must migrate to PHP 7! Take advantage of exceptional performance improvements, cut your hardware use in half and enjoy the best of PHP. This workshop is for everyone that is still eyeing PHP 7 while still using PHP 5, and wants to review their 1 million LOC project before jumping to PHP 7. When migrating, we need to check old code and target only the interesting issues. This session will connect the backward incompatibilities and new features to their actual location in the code, relying on static analysis to quickly process a large code base. Based on our accumulated experience and tools, we'll review the issues, diagnose criticality, select the best fixes and prioritize the tasks. All tools are Open Source, and ready to be integrated into your project lifecycle.

Abstract: kaChing powers the largest social investment site on the web with nearly 500,000 registered users. Our mission is to make the investment world open by offering transparent investment vehicles that directly compete with mutual funds. Over the past year and a half, we have built a large feature set and evolved our software continuously with very short iterations and (almost) no regression. In this talk, I will present our experience building a large test-driven code base from the ground up. Using concrete examples, we will have a look at component based APIs, declarative programming, minimizing the concepts of an API, specific cases of separation of concern and interactions with third-party software. We will look at multiple programming paradigms from languages such as Scala, shell script and Prolog and see how these ideas can be embedded as syntactic sugar in your Java.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Discover how Victor can help you on victorrentea.ro : company training catalog, consultancy and YouTube playlists.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
