INTRA-DEPARTMENTAL PROUD MOMENTS
Redesigning the Surgical
Quality of Care Experience
Beverly Palmer
It was September 2011 when Nancy Johnson, Patient Care Administrator,
convened the staff of surgical services. At that time, the department was led by
three assistant managers, Beverly Palmer, MSN, RN (ANM for SADU, PICC, Pre-
op, and PACU), Edith Walsh RN (Operating Room), and Ann Kiss RN
(Endoscopy). Challenging changes and initiatives were announced.
The creation of a chemotherapy department as part of the MD Anderson
Orlando Health will be housed in the SADU area. Supplementing this department
will be an improved infusion therapy for outpatients. Passing inspection with high
honors, the department now operates with Pam McGuire BSN,RN, Hilah Polley,
RN, Gail Graf, RN, and Anita Athridge, RN.
Integrating the endoscopy department in the pre-op and PACU areas was a
gargantuan initiative. It resulted in multiple trials to best professionally serve
Edith Walsh different surgical and endoscopic clients with privacy, nurse skills, and bed
placement. Process required cross training nurses in three charting systems, focused
patient care, and different procedures. Today, the majority of the nurses can work
from one area to another with their enhanced skills in caring for endoscopic and
surgical patients from admission to recovery to discharge in any given day. The
former PAT office is now site of two endoscopic procedure rooms with OR nurses
also cross-trained to assist.
The assistant nurse managers led staff through successful outcomes from
these structural empowerment challenges. The staff accepted the accountability,
provided operational input, and most of all defined the meaning of exemplary
professional practice intersecting with the professional model of Orlando Health.
