Research
• The strengths of my research was that after researching different
magazines it helped me visualise the colour schemes to use and how it
would layout. My research helped my product by helping me to visualise
my main character and what other stories I’m going to talk about, such as
tom cruise films like Top Gun, Risky Business, Cocktail and A Few Good
Men. In my research I thought that this topic would be good because it
would give me a lot to talk about and I can add in quotes from different
films to interest the reader and my audience.
Planning
• The strengths of my planning were that the collages of different potential
tom cruise photos I could use for my main photos and other photos for
facts and quotes about the different films. My planning helped my product
because it helped me visualise my magazine and it helped me choose
fonts, colour schemes, and layout ideas. The weaknesses of my planning
were that when I started to produce my magazine I started thinking of
different ideas that weren’t my original ideas. Such as what colour the
subtitles, heading and text should be. My product would’ve been better If
i had more facts and information on my double page spread.
Time Management
I filled out the pro-forma template on the pre-production powerpoint. I
decided to write down when I wanted to initially start, when I needed to
complete specific pieces of work, and what dates I needed to be complete by.
I didn’t however leave any contingency time, which meant I did not have any
extra time to go back and make improvements.
At the start of my project, I managed to keep on track, but then I began to fall
behind. I fell behind because of personal commitments. What I did to
compensate for this was ensure that I did more work at home, so I could keep
on track.
I feel that I would have benefitted greatly from extra time on the project. It
would have given me more time to increase the quality of my double page
spread. I would have also had more time to go back and improve my
documentation that is used to support my production.
If I was able to do my schedule differently next time, I would aim to give
myself more time to undertake certain things.
Technical Qualities
I began by placing a strong image of Tom Cruise at the
forefront of the magazine, since the magazine is focussed
on him and his films. When placing the smaller images
onto my magazine, I had to take into consideration the
relationship. Total Film magazine’s smaller article images
are all action based, whilst my related images are all
associated with Tom Cruise.
For the selection of fonts, I decided to use the ones
available on the computer, rather than download ones
from www.dafont.com or similar websites. This was so my
magazine would work between all PCs at college and that
there were no issues with compatibility. For the barcode, I
went on google and found one that was appropriate for
my magazine. To create the cocktails & dreams logo, I used
Photoshop to carefully construct this. I used the lasso tool
to select around it and delete the white background using
backspace. When creating the magazine, I had to also
consider my layers, and ensure that certain images,
coloured text and backgrounds were appropriately
layered. Where possible, I also renamed layers to ensure
they were organised and structured, to help my workflow.
Technical Qualities
When producing my double page spread, I had to
consider my layout and design. I wanted my text
on the left hand side page to be associated with
the relevant image (illustration). So I ensured
that the text was appropriately lined up in
relation to this. Originally, I was going to use just
one image of Tom Cruise on the right hand side,
but then I decided that it would be beneficial to
include additional images on the left to add to
my copy that I had wrote for the article.
When adding the quotes on the right hand side, I
ensured to wrap these round Tom so they are
both legible and the focus. Compared to the
article below, I have tried to use images to
complement my article and ensure that they
remain the core focus on the double page
spread, allowing the audience to become
involved with the subject content.
Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work looks really good because I like my layout of the different images and
the links between the colours of the fonts. My favourite aspects of my magazine are
the way tom cruise stands out on the front cover and the double page spread, I also
like how I’ve linked the heading and film titles on the front cover with the film top
gun. I would improve my front cover by adding more information about the films, such
as when they were produced. Id also improve my double page spread by adding more
information about the films such as facts and more reviews.
I have used the red
writing for my
headings to link in
with the film logo
top gun. I think this
gives more of a
professional look.
I have used
this strong
photo of
Tom Cruise
for my main
focus
because it
makes the
magazine
eye catching
I have carried on the red writing so the colour
scheme flows throughout my magazine. I have also
used little photos and a main photo of tom cruise
again to carry on the theme. I have chosen to set
my double page spread text in this way so that the
readers recognise the film that I am talking about.
Audience Appeal
I have appealed my target audience by making my magazine colourful, eye catching and
interesting for my readers. I think the topic worked well because a lot of people from my
survey have now started a trend of watching old films, the films I have talked about are also
old films. I would improve my product by adding some recent films that tom cruise has
been in to possibly interest other readers.
The photo of tom cruise will probably
interest girls more than boys because of
his looks and how dominant he looks in
this photo.
I think the cut out
logo of cocktails
and dreams works
well because it
links in with the
films I have
discussed.
the layout of my
double page spread
worked well because
its easy for my
audience to red and
the images help them
understand what I'm
talking about.
Peer
Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the colour schemes and how certain colours
flowed throughout the magazine.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
More information on the double page spread and
also add more images to the whole piece of work to
make it more eye popping and gives it a better
standard of work for the final product.
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the colour scheme used because it is different
and it is unique for the work. I also like the
information given with the detail it is put in. I also like
the title used and the way it is created because it Is
produced with a professional standard.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• You could add more images to the work to make
it pop out more and more eye catching for the
audience.
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
The images next to the text to help us know what
your talking bout.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
You could’ve mixed up the colours to make the
magazine more eye catching.
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
I agreed with the comments about how the colour
scheme flowed and the images to help the readers
know what I'm talking about.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
I disagreed with the feed back that said I need to
mix up the colour more because that would’ve
messed up the colour scheme.
Peer Feedback Summary
• Id change some of the images to make the
magazine more eye catching and it'll interest the
audience more. I would also add more images to
the final product for this because it will make it
stand out more than it already is with the colour
scheme I have chosen for this work. This will
make it more appealing to the audience and will
make the whole product more of a professional
standard that will be better.
