Targeting Young Adults with a Psychological Thriller
1. EVALUATION ACTIVITY 4 & 5
Who would be the audience for your
media product?
How did you attract/address your
audience?
2. The target audience for our media production is young adults, ranging from the
ages of fifteen to the late twenties. The collection of people in this target audience
could be students at university or college meaning they are an intelligent or
intellectual audience. They have an interest in comics, magazines or books with
twists in the plot. They are knowledgeable fans of thriller and action films such as
Taken, Seven or Inception, or films with a psychological element to it. As they are
students they spend a lot of time with friends attending cinema showing or
watching films at home, meaning they are up to date with the latest film releases.
There is a huge variety of people we personally believe would enjoy this type of
production.
3. Our Target audience member for
our thriller is Tamsyn, a 17 year old
girl studying at college. She enjoys
loud music, and reading
books/comics. She takes A level
psychology meaning films with a
psychological edge would interest
her and she would be more likely to
watch it. This Member is a huge gig
enthusiast whom has been to music
festivals such as Slam Dunk and
Leeds Fest, she also enjoys spending
time with her friends. She's
passionate about piercings, tattoo's,
television shows such as; The
Walking Dead, Misfits, and Breaking
Bad. She also has a great interest in
films of the thriller genre.
4. Our film opening was inspired by films such as Taken. This
inspiration is used towards the end of the opening of our
thriller when Sabrina is tied to a chair with the antagonist
looming over her. In the film Taken however, the antagonist is
tied to the chair rather than the innocent victim. We used this
idea in the final scene because we thought that it'd have a
strong impact on the audience, making them want to see
more and find out what happened. This helps to capture their
attention. For this scene we used very low, dark lighting which
added to the eerie-ness which a thriller would bring. This also
connotes the danger that Sabrina is in and the seriousness of
the situation.
5. There are many similarities between our thriller ‘obsession’ and the
thriller ‘Taken’. For example, there is a common use of P.O.V. shots
between the protagonist ‘Bryan Mills’ and the antagonist ‘Marko’.
We also featured P.O.V. shots within our own thriller to demonstrate
Sabrina’s view point, this also helped to build up the suspense of the
‘mystery’ kidnapper.
6. We can help to promote our product through terms of
Synergy and Convergence. We can help promote our
product, this being the thriller, through the use of other
products such as I phone games (as previously done by
‘Attack The Block’, a low budget film). This helped to
promote the film and as the app was free it generated more
interest from the audience.
7. We can also associate our thriller with popular musicians which helps to promote
the popularity. For example, Ellie Goulding wrote the main song that features within
the film ‘Divergent’. The song ‘Beating Heart’ would be released onto one of her
albums which influences her fans to come and see the film resulting in the creation
of a wider market.
Ellie Goulding will be able to ‘Piggyback’ off of ‘Divergent’ as creating part of the
soundtrack will help to promote her music to a wider audience. This is seen as cross-
promotion as both are able to promote their media products together across the
different industries. This is easier for the audience to interact with the initial
product, this being the film, as they can buy the soundtrack etc. making them more
involved.
8. We also felt that it was important to assess the
desirability of our film. As this is a thriller aimed at
teenagers and young adults, the fact that we were
teenagers ourselves meant that we were more adapt
at making a thriller for this age range. We also
discussed our idea with our friends to see if it would
interest them and they were all impressed by what
they had seen of the film during the editing process.
9. We created a focus group to gain feedback from our target
audience. We gathered a group of 5 males and 5 females
between the age range of 15-27 and brainstormed our idea to
them to see what they thought. We then showed them our
final edited version of our thriller ‘Obsession’ and asked for
their honest opinions.
Most people said they would be interested in watching the
completed thriller through cinema release however one girl in
particular (Bethany Sykes aged 18) mentioned that she was
concerned about the visible errors in lighting but said apart
from these errors our production was very intriguing and
unique.
