1. PSI’s Google Mapping Project
MEASURE GIS Working Group Meeting
Washington, DC
April 27, 2011
Kim Longfield
2. The Google Mapping Project
o Partnership with Google.org, initiated early 2010
o Objectives:
Increase the use of maps for planning, monitoring, advocacy within
PSI country offices
Increase access to health outlet locations – private and public
facilities, pharmacies – through Google’s web-based mapping tools,
for use by public health organizations but also for the general public.
o Part of a broader Google.org project to strengthen national health systems
in Africa and South-East Asia.
3. How it works
o Small grant from Google to test in 6 pilot countries during 2010: Ethiopia,
Laos, Mozambique, Nepal, Tanzania, Zimbabwe
o Platforms receive technical assistance, tools and capacity building on GIS
and mapping - to more efficiently use, manage and share information for
monitoring and planning purposes.
o Health outlet mapping surveys are incorporated into existing
surveys/monitoring activities.
o PSI platforms publish the location of “Point of Interest” (POIs) through
Google Maps: share basic health service data with MoH, donors, partners.
4. Initial Results
o So far, some 20,000 outlet locations provided to Google, and accessible
through Google Maps and Google Earth – from the 6 pilot countries but
also from many others: Kenya, Madagascar, Pakistan, Swaziland, Central
America,…
o Positive response from many local partners, incl. MoH, donors, partner
NGOs
o Increased internal capacity on mapping tools and applications, for project
planning, monitoring, reporting
o Complements traditional GIS activities: dynamic maps become accessible
to program managers, field staff, etc.
5. Next Steps
o Document experiences from 2010 pilot
o Disseminate technical support documents: Google Mapping Toolkit
o Strong demand from non-pilot PSI platforms to start using the tools: scale-
up during 2011
o Increase involvement of partner organizations (MoH & others)
o Maintain health outlet locations up-to-date (Google MapMaker) &
disseminate additional venues, particularly PSI franchise networks
