What is UDL?

UDL is the idea of developing one’s curriculum so that
all students have equal opportunities to learn
regardless of their backgrounds, disabilities or
                     learning styles.

http://www.udlcenter.org/aboutudl/whatisudl
Created From??

This idea was developed from the concept of stairs
leading into a building. Not everyone can use the
stairs, some will use a ramp, some will use an
elevator, the need for choice is there.
“UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional
goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for
 everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather
flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for
           individual needs.” (www.udlcenter.org)
Education needs to be tailored to the learner to
make sure learning happens across the spectrum
What Does Research Say?

Research says that all people bring to learning a different
set of skills and experiences that shape who we are.
Learning is based upon the what, how and why of
learning.
Supporting Research

The use of stimulation in learning causes brain
activity that aids in information processing. The use
of technology, manipulatives, learning varieties
affects all aspects of the brain and an overall learning
experience.

        http://www.cast.org/research/udl/index.html
It’s All A Matter of Principle

Principle I: Provide Multiple Means of Representation
(The “what” of learning)

Principle II: Provide Multiple Means of Action and
  Expression
(The “how” of learning)

Principle III: Provide Multiple Means of Engagement
(The “why” of learning)
Principle I: Provide Multiple Means of Representation
                 (The “what” of learning)

How we gather facts and
  categorize what we
  see, hear and read.
      Identifying
 letters, words, or an
   author’s style are
   recognition tasks.
To Support Diverse Recognition Networks:

  Provide multiple examples
  Highlight critical features
  Provide multiple media and
   formats
  Support background context

http://www.k8accesscenter.org/training_resources/RTIandUDL.asp
Principle I

Options:
Flashcards
Audio books
Thinking maps
KWL charts
Principle II: Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression
                    (The “how” of learning)

                                      Planning and
                                    performing tasks.
                                    How we organize
                                     and express our
                                    ideas. Writing an
                                    essay or solving a
                                    math problem are
                                      strategic tasks.
To Support Diverse Strategic Networks

 Provide flexible models of skilled performance
 Provide opportunities to practice with supports
  Provide ongoing, relevant feedback
 Offer flexible opportunities for demonstrating skill

http://www.k8accesscenter.org/training_resources/RTIandUDL.asp
Principle II

Options:
Digital storytelling
Dioramas
Manipulatives
SMART boards
Principle III: Provide Multiple Means of Engagement
                  (The “why” of learning)

How learners get engaged and stay motivated.
How they are challenged, excited, or
 interested. These are affective dimensions.
To Support Affective Networks

 Offer choices of content and tools
 Offer adjustable levels of challenge
  Offer choices of rewards
 Offer choices of learning context

http://www.k8accesscenter.org/training_resources/RTIandUDL.asp
Principle III

Options:
Scheduling goals
Provide feedback
Goal setting and expectations
Self-assessment
Central Role of Technology in UDL

The role of technology is to give both teachers and
students different ways of learning, presenting
materials and learning information regardless of the
                 curriculum subject.

            http://www.udlcenter.org/sites/udlcenter.org/files/notech_final2.pdf
The 21st Century classroom gives us the opportunity to
teach students how to be productive members of a
world of technology. It is our obligation to educate
them to utilize the technology to make achievement
                        possible.
Technology Can……

 Improve the learning process
 Provide students with more choices and opportunities
 Options, options, options
 Provides flexibility
 Enhance the language,
  culture, and academic
  diversity, closing the gap
  for the differences in a
  classroom. Giving students
  an equal playing field with
  their studies.
What Does The Technology Look Like?

                 Integrating the
              Internet, world-wide
          classroom, and the latest in
                  developments
What Does This Look Like For TMS?

 Students are more motivated to learn
 Students can become self-directed learners
 Students can take ownership into their learning
 Better comprehension of curriculum
