Introduction:
Casandra and I chose the Library of Congress webpage as our web 2.0 tool. The
webpage is considered to be a web 2.0 tool for many reasons. Those reasons consist of
website/user collaboration, it stores free information for the user to use, it offers dispersion, it
makes webcasts readily available, and it has mass participation. This website is made readily
available for everyone, it is completely free, and it also offers digital collections. We want to
take this opportunity to give a quick tutorial of how to search for a digital document using the
Library of Congress webpage.
Step by Step Instruction:
1. Begin by typing the URL in the address bar at the top of the Internet browser.
2. 2. After you arrive to the homepage you should click on the digital collection tab at the
top of the page.
3. After you click on the digital collections tab you will be prompted to another page
where you will choose from a list of featured digital collections. Choose one from
the list that interests you. For this tutorial we are going the use the American
3. History& Culture tab.
4. After moving to the next page you are again prompted with a list of topics to choose
from, choose one that interests you. For this tutorial we will use the sports,
5. 5. After clicking on the sports, recreation tab you will be prompted with a list of digital
documents. Choose any document that may be suitable for you.
Educational Uses:
The Library of Congress website can be used in an educational setting. This is a
database that can be used in research or for personal reasons. The Library of Congress is
a part of the Interlibrary Loan System which means that their holdings can be requested
and borrowed by a patron from another library who is also a part of the Interlibrary
Loan System. If a student needs to do research for a certain topic, the Library of
Congress website is a great place to begin.
Pros and Cons:
6. The pros definitely outweigh the cons when it comes to the Library of Congress
website. The Library of Congress is an institution ran by the federal government so it is a
credible source for educational purposes. Another pro is that the website displays that
the Library of Congress can be followed on a number of social media networks. If there
is a con with the website it is that it is a little difficult to navigate at first.
