Group Child Care in Golden 2011 A feasibility study to find some answers
Conducted by Laurie Dalzell
Today’s session Introductions around the room Quote Activity Explanation of the project and the key “sponsors” Consultation activities Commitments from the group Wrap-up/Questions/Comments Done by 5:30 PM
Guidelines for today’s discussion Respect for current and past child care providers’ work Keep comments forward thinking Parking lot Mindful of the time If you need to stretch, use the washroom, or visit your children, feel free. We won’t have any structured breaks in our short session today.
I believe that children are our future. Whitney Houston Write your own quote (or use one you already know) about children and community.
Introduction to the project Giving Tree Child Care Society Early Childhood Development Coalition College of the Rockies MavenConnector Group, Laurie Dalzell
Objective #1 Conduct the research to determine the feasibility and viability of such a facility – approach the study anew. Provide data and research that looks at what’s happening in our local area, but also what is happenings in other similar regions with like demographics/psychographics and economic pressures.
fea·si·bil·i·tyfēzəˈbilitē feasibility - the quality of being doable Feasibility Study: An analysis and evaluation of a proposed project to determine if it (1) is technically feasible, (2) is feasible within the estimated cost and (3) will be viable. Feasibility studies are almost always conducted where large sums are at stake.
vi·a·bleˈvīəbəl Capable of working successfully; Able to break even or make a profit. “The proposed investment was economically viable".
Objective #2 Look at specific types of models that could sustain a facility in a small rural BC community – best practices. Look at the overall social/environmental and economic (the triple bottom-line)issues facing the Golden and Area A area and using global research, look at how a unique model(s) could sustain such a facility.
Reality Check: PEST
Appreciative Inquiry So much of finding the answers depends on how you ask the questions Asking what works and build upon that to create the future that you want to live in. We’ll also ask what we need to see more of, to find out where the gaps are perceived to be.
AI further explained Appreciating: Valuing the best of what is Envisioning: What might be Dialoguing: What should be Innovating: What will be Jane Magruder Watkins and Bernard J. Mohr, Appreciative Inquiry: Change at the Speed of Imagination, Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer (2001)
SWOT or SOAR Which would you rather do? SOAR
Objective #3 Review the value of linking various training and education models with the childcare centre. College of the Rockies is very interested in supporting our community to help sustain a child care facility, however, the facility must be tied to education and training.
Questions so far?
Activity #2 In pairs, describe your best child care experience. It can be from the perspective of a parent, it can be a memory you have as a child, it can be in any type of care giving situation. Be as detailed as possible and use descriptive words. Listener should take notes of key emotional or descriptive words Share key words with the whole group
Activity #3 SOAR “S” Strengths in our community as they related to the topic of Child Care What works? What can we build on? People, resources, things we like “O” Opportunities: Think Weaknesses and Threats in positive phrases… “A” Aspirations: What would we like to see? See more of?
Last activity: Café Who would you like to see in this conversation? Why? Creative Business Models that could work in Golden. Educational or Training Opportunities that could work in conjunction with childcare. Give details and examples.

Notas do Editor

  1. In the course of the next hour and a half. We will go through the following things. The part where I talk will be quick. Hopefully 20 seconds or less per slide (PetchaKucha a format devised in Tokyo in 2003 for young designers to meet, network and show their work and the Japanese word for “chit chat” now has become a technique for making presentations: 20 slides in 20 sec per slide (total 6.67 minutes) to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace). And then we’ll do several group discussion activities.
  2. Anything you’d like to add?
  3. Think about children, the future, community. You can write a quote specific to Golden or general for the “world.” It can be original or someone else’s quote. You have 5 minutes to do this if you take less than five min, use the remainder of the time for silent contemplation of your quote.
  4. The “supervising” organizations on this project are: Giving Tree Child Care Society (formed in 2008): Brenda Managh, Monica De, Caroline Carl-Osborne, Rhonda Smith: MISSION STATEMENT--to provide Golden with a high quality, universally inclusive, affordable, and developmentally appropriate (QUAD principles) childcare facility. GOALS:  1. To build a licensed Community Child Care Facility accessible to all members of the community and which demonstrates our value of the early years by:-providing children with the best possible start to an education grounded in research that recognizes the early years as the most influential period of time for later academic and social success-striving to break down barriers in the community that families may experience such as cost, transportation, and social isolation-supporting our community families in their efforts to access the workforce.-keeping our young families in Golden as they represent our future socially and economically2.To conduct fund-raising activities to further the objectives in #1.3. To undertake the foregoing activities on a not-for-profit basis with any surpluses to be reinvested in improving the provision of the services set out in #1.Early Childhood Development Coalition: ECDC: Joanne McCullough, Coordinator.College of the Rockies:Laurie Dalzell, MavenConnector.ca: helped write a B-plan in 2009 for GTCCS, etc.
  5. These Objectives are from the Terms of reference that the “supervising group” put together. We have to ask first what is/are the needs surrounding child care in Golden, if any, at this point in time? Not what was the need in 2009 when the Business Plan was written, but today. We’ll run through an exercise in a minute to answer that.
  6. More questions: How many people have this need today, project next year to three years? What exactly are people asking for (back to what are the needs)
  7. If a need is determined, how can we address this need. How can we create something creative and sustainable. If a new child care option were to be introduced in our community, especially one that other business might be asked to support, it has to be financially viable, even as a not-for profit entity.
  8. PEST: We have to “scan the environment” to find out what is going on today.1. What’s going on in Golden today?2. looking at the Political atmosphere today and moving forward3. Economic: Jobs, wages, fluctuation in local, national and world economy4. Social: What are current trends in Childcare in Golden (trading with friends…)
  9. We have to assess the strengths and needs of the community. To do this we’ll use an approached based on what is called Appreciative Inquiry.Think about this for a minute. So much of finding the answers depends on what questions you ask. In fact, the first question is FATEFUL.Seeing Red Cars Video: http://www.seeingredcars.com/ which we won’t see now, but I recommend watching it if you haven’t already.Example: Tell me what the problems are here. V. Tell me what works in your organization. How many of you employ a method like this when addressing issues and challenges and new ideas? Are there other names you use?
  10. For your future reference as well.
  11. SWOT: DefineSOAR: Strengts, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results.
  12. The “teller” gets the floor, the listener can ask leading questions, but can’t chime in. 3 minutes per partner. Listener write key words down.As a group we will write down the key words on a sheet of paper.
  13. Divide in three. One group take each then rotate
  14. Café style: Three tables with sheets of paper. 5 minutes per table.
  15. I would like to ask you to help educate the community on this project. Let people know when the survey comes out, spread the link, remind people when you see them on the street. Get people who don’t think they have an interest in this topic to have an interest in this topic…
