I began my A2 media project by researching into the history and types of music videos and analysing music videos, digipaks
and magazine advertisements, to help me build a knowledge and understanding of their background and their codes and
conventions. I looked at many rock/metal music videos, digipaks and adverts, as this was my chosen bands genre of music, to
find out their codes and conventions which I could follow, develop and challenge in my media products. I learned that rock
music videos are mostly performance style videos which means the band play to the camera or to an audience which helps
create synergy and representation of rock/metal bands and artists. I also learned that mise-en-scene is very significant in rock
music videos as it helps to give band and genre recognition to the audience. I found that my research was extremely useful
when planning and making my media products and I go into more detail about the codes and conventions of rock music
videos on blog post: Thursday 11th September 2014.
Throughout my final media products, there are similar aspects of mise-en-scene, camera, editing and sound. This is due to me
following the codes and conventions. On the other hand, I have added my own creativity and style to challenge and develop
on the conventions of the rock genre.
Music video: Camera
When analysing and reviewing existing music videos, I found out that
rock music videos use various camera angles and positions to help
create certain effects and also understanding. Therefore, I wanted to
incorporate these angles and camera positions to achieve the best
possible effects for my own video. In my analysis of Thunderstruck and
Highway to Hell by AC/DC (blog posts: 7th July 2014 and 15th July 2014) I
was inspired by the use of P.O.V shots and how the directors shot the
drummer of the band using side angles and mid-shots to allow the
audience to see the drum kit and the drummer performing to give the
audience understanding and recognition. Therefore, I gave my chosen
bands drummer P.O.V glasses to collect first person footage of him
playing which resulted in excellent footage. I also shot the drummer of
my chosen band at a mid-shot to allow the audience to see him
performing as this was the style of my music video and allows the
audience to understand what they are listening to and seeing on
screen. On the other hand, I had chosen to shoot the drummer at a low
angle to add my own creativity to the conventions and to develop on
them which allowed me to be experimental which resulted in amazing
shots of the drummers performance. However, still following and using
the conventions.

Music video: Editing
In the post production stage of my music video (editing) I was inspired by real media forms which I have used and developed
on, as well as creating my own style, vision and effects which I have used throughout my music video to build a concept and a
style which I believe challenges real media products also.
When analysing and looking at an existing music video, “Drown by Bring me the horizon”, I found that in the video is a television
style pause which links to the narrative of the song as well as creating a unique effect on the video and the song. The paused
screen is a TV styled which gave me inspiration for my style of music video. However I wanted more than just one paused
screen to help me build a television styled music video. Therefore, added effects on Vegas Pro, such as a fuzzy turning on
screen, colour screens, an interval screen which gives the effect of the music video breaking down and failing and the effect
of the television being switched off at the end of the music video. All these effects helped me to construct a creative and
unique style to the rock genre, which therefore develops and challenges the codes and conventions of traditional rock music
videos.
Furthermore, after analysing more rock music videos I found that the shots cut quickly and the videos are traditionally fast
paced. This gave me the idea of having my music video in the style of a montage. This would allow me to include various and
creative aspects of the band and to show the audience: behind the scenes footage and funny moments as well as
performances on and off stage. The montage style is used in the music video of “Guns N’ Roses – Paradise City” which I have
analysis in further detail in blog post: 24th June 2014. This style allows audiences to see the band in a different light and shows
how they act and behave on as well as off stage which gives the audiences an insight to the bands life as rock musicians.
Therefore, I wanted to challenge and use this style in my music video
but to add my own twist and creativity to the style to produce my
own effects and results. With the television and montage style my
music video used, developed and challenges the codes and
conventions of real and existing rock music videos.

Music video: Mise-en-scene
When analysing existing rock music videos, I found that the mise-en-scene of the videos are extremely similar and have a set of
conventions which I have followed. From the way the band are represented to the audience, to the lighting on stage.
Setting:
Firstly, the setting for my music video is on a stage in which props, such as
the bands instruments and amplifiers, are placed as well as lighting above
and around, projecting down onto the stage. I also have various locations
where the band have been filmed including the studio and backstage
Area, all of which have low key lighting which goes against the traditional
conventions of a rock music video as the settings are typically well lit to
ensure the camera and audience can see the band clearly while they
perform. I have challenged this convention to allow the genre of rock and
metal to be identified, as this genre is associated with dark related things.
For example: skulls and tattoos which are commonly used in the marketing
and branding of rock musicians and bands. On the stage is the bands logo
in the background. This is a convention of rock bands as it identifies the
band to the audience as well as a marketing and branding image.
This is therefore an example of how I have used the conventions of real
rock music products in my production.
Body Language:
In existing media products the band members have their own style and way
of performing on stage and how they engage with the crowd. My band
follow these styles including the way they engage with the audience by
raising their arms causing a crowd reaction which creates energy and
excitement in the performance.
Furthermore, the way the band finish and bow to the audience is a
convention they follow. The band all come together and bow together as a
group. Even going as far as using the same hand signs and poses of existing
bands e.g. the peace hand sign.

Facial expressions:
The facial expressions of my bands include: focused and happy. This is a
convention of rock musicians and bands as they want to be represented looking
happy and having a great time on and off stage. Their body language and facial
expressions are significant as it reflects on the audience creating energy and
excitement for the crowd. They also have focused facial expressions during their
performances as they are concentrating on playing their instruments and creating
the best sounds possible. Therefore, my media product has followed the
conventions of real media products.
Hair + Make-up
Although the band do not wear make-up, the bands hair styles follow the
conventions and genre of rock and metal. The hair convention of existing
rock/metal bands is long hair below the shoulder. Although not all of my bands
members have this style, two of the members do which means I have followed the
conventions of the genre as well as challenging and developing on the hair
convention with the other band members. Although they still have long hair which
makes them fit into the genre of rock and metal.
Positioning:
The position of my band on stage has followed and uses conventions of real
rock/metal music videos. The drummer is positioned at the back of the stage
however, is usually raised up to allow the audience to see him perform. I have
challenged this as I have not raised my drummer up. I have kept him the same
level as the rest of the band. This connotes equality as the band are all equal and
no one is above or more important than anyone else. The bassist and lead
guitarists are positioned on the left hand side of the singer. The other guitarist is
positioned on the right hand side of the singer. Finally, the singer is placed in the
centre of the stage at the front which connotes he is the most significant part of
the band. However, all members of the band, except the drummer, move around
on stage to create an exciting performance and to interact with the audience.

Costume:
When analysing existing rock music videos I had gained the knowledge of the styles and costume choices the band members
wear on and off stage. Therefore, gaining understanding of the rock/metal genre and the conventions of costume. Costume
is significant in the performance of a band as it helps the audience to recognise the individual members. For example, Slash in
Guns N’ Roses is known for wearing his iconic top hat.
In my music video, my band wore clothing which related to the rock/metal genre which made it clear to the audience about
the genre as well as recognition of the band. In my music video I have followed and uses the conventions of existing media
products. For example, the bassist of the band, George, wears vests which is a convection of rock musicians. The vest is worn
for style as well as to show the members tattoos on his arm which also relates back to the rock/metal genre as it is
stereotypical that rock musicians have tattoos.
Furthermore, I have used the conventions in the digipak of my
production as it follows the styles and aesthetics of existing bands. For
example, in my digipak, the main photo is the band together. Each
members has their specific style and fashion sense. However they all
link into the rock genre and use the conventions. Including, the
guitarist, Tom. He wears a leather jacket in the photo which is a
symbolic item of clothing as it relates the rock genre and is a
stereotypical look. This also helps the audience to understand that
they are viewing a band in the rock genre as the leather look is
commonly worn by rock musicians and bands. The band also wear
denim jackets which is another way the digipak follows and uses the
conventions. Existing bands such as Guns N’ Roses are seen wearing
denim jackets. As the band are extremely successful, this look has
become linked to the rock genre due to their popularity. Furthermore,
the band also wear hats which is a convention of real media products
and shows how my band have followed the style and image of
existing bands. This helps the audience to recognise the band and
individual members due to their look, as well as to instantly understand
that they are viewing a rock band.

Digipak
From analysing existing music videos, digipaks and magazine adverts, I built an understanding and knowledge of how many
similarities they include with one and other. This is used to create synergy between the products and understanding for the
audience as it helps them to link the texts together using these similarities which can be instantly recognised.
In all my media texts I have included the bands logo clearly to create synergy and recognition for my audience. This is
significant, as this way the audience can instantly understand the band and who they are viewing in each media product.
Although the bands logo is not the same size in each of the media products, I have still been constant and clear by making
the logo centred, which draws the readers attention to the text. I have also included the production logo in each of my
media products to create synergy and relations, as well as helping the audience understand the media text by recognition.
I have learnt from my research that colours are significant in the branding of a band and the colours are symbolic and
recognisable to the product. Therefore, I have used this information to make my products similar by using the same colour
scheme of: white, black, gold and purple. Using the same colour scheme in each of my medias creates synergy between
them and for the audience, which is important when branding and marketing a band or product. Therefore, creating an
effect on my audience, as when the see those colours they will think of the band and their products and will create links and
relations between each media.
In all of my media texts I have used the same font style to create synergy and recognition for my audience. In my media
texts I have used the font style: Magneto. This font is used in the bands logo, which is seen in each media product and also
for the text in the music video, digipak and magazine advertisement. This font represents the band and once the audience
see the font they will think of the logo and the band which is significant when branding and marketing.
Digipak
Advert
Music video
Furthermore, my media products all uses the same image and photo styles and editing, to create synergy and to link all the
media products together. In both my magazine advertisement and my digipak designs, I have used similar photos and styles
to represent my band. I have used editing techniques to make the images similar by making them black and white, which
follows the rock genre and conventions, as well as creating synergy and allowing the audience to identify the style of the
band and the way they are marketed and branded. The photos are also similar due to the scenery, location and clothing
the band members were wearing, as they had been taken at the same location on the same day, during a photoshoot that
I had organised. Therefore, there are visible similarities between the photos and the styles in which they have been taken
and edited.
Sound:
Through sound I was able to create synergy and similarities between each of my media products. I have used sound and
text to create synergy between my texts, as this helps to build understanding for my audience and makes it easily
identifiable as being my bands product. In all of my media products I have used the text saying: “Let us drown”. This is my
bands album name which is used to market the band and their debut album. The text is used in all my medias and I have
made it clear for my audience to see and read as well as making it centred and focused on, which grabs the readers
attention when reading and viewing my medias. This texts creates synergy in all my medias as it is seen throughout each. It is
also sung by the singer of my band as it is the title of the song, which helps when understanding each media and how the
link together.
Therefore, I feel that sound, colours, fonts, texts, photos and images in my music video and in my digipak and advert, has
created an effective marketing and branding combination between my main text and my ancillary texts. This is because I
have used similar elements and have created a specific style and theme between my texts which allows my audience to be
able to easily understand and recognise the band. This will also help them to remember the band and their products which
is vital when marketing and branding.
Firstly, I created a questionnaire on Google Docs which abled me to create an online survey which anyone could fill in,
which was useful for me, as I could get a range of various answers and responses. After creating the survey I could then
begin to collect responses. Firstly, I made my friends and family fill out my questionnaire and then posted in on social
media including Facebook, which would allow a mass audience to fill out my survey so I could get a fully diverse range
of responses from a wide variety of ages.
The main purpose of my media products is to engage with audiences and to see how they respond to my texts.
Therefore, creating a survey allowed me to gather all this information about my media texts and to see how well my
target audience liked it or disliked it and to comment on things I could alter or change in my medias. Therefore, giving me
a critical feedback which is beneficial for my evaluation.
Having an online questionnaire allowed me to gather a range of responses and in a short amount of time. I set out to get
at least 50 response which also meant going out first hand and collecting primary data. After collecting all my information
back I had over 50 responses which was excellent, as this gives me a wide range of answers and responses as well as
giving me reliable and accurate data which can be summarised. With over 50 responses I was able to see whether my
products had been successful and appealing to my target audience or not and what I would alter or change if I was to
approach creating this project again.
For my questionnaire, I decided to create a variety of questions which linked to my three media products. I wanted to find
out what my audience liked, disliked and would change in my media products.
The first opening questions involved me asking about gender, age, favourite music genres, how often they watch music
videos and how do they watch music videos. I asked these opening questions so I could build an understanding of the
person filling out my questionnaire and to see how their tastes and preferences responded to my rock music video.
Firstly, the main gender that filled out my questionnaire was by males
at 72% to females at 28%. This wasn’t a shock to me as males are my
target audience for my media products. So it was significant to
receive a high number of males filling out my survey as their responses
as my target audience matter greatly.
Secondly, the main age range was 16-21 year olds. This was also my
target audience age range. Therefore, I received important data
from the age range I was targeting at which is vital when receiving
critical feedback. The high number of this age group connotes that
many have filed out my survey on social networking sites as they are
stereotypically the age that use them. I had received a range of
different answers from the favourite genre question. The most
common answer was hip-hop/rap, closely followed by rock and
electronic/dance. This information shows that I will receive a range of
opinions of a genre in which people are unfamiliar by which gives me
a diverse spread of responses. On the other hand, the rock genre was
also a popular answer which is important as this is my target market
and I am keen to find out what they say about my final media
products as they are familiar with the codes and conventions of this
genre and can link my products to existing real media texts.
Continuing from the last slide, I asked my audience how often
they watched music videos to help me build an understanding
and to construct a personality about the person filling out my
questionnaire. The most common answer was more that twice a
week closely followed by everyday. This shows me that my
audience watch a lot of music videos and have a great
knowledge of what a music video include, their codes and
conventions and what makes them so popular to their target
market. Therefore, the responses are compared to real media
products and allows me to see how my product links and differs
from existing music videos.
I then asked how the audience watch music videos. The most
popular answer in this question was on YouTube which was
closely followed by people watching music videos on TV. I
expected YouTube to be the most popular response, as my
target audience are the age range which are stereotypically
involved with online sites such a YouTube and spend a lot of
their time online which lead to teenagers going onto websites
such a YouTube to find entertainment.
My next question involved the audience watching my music
video and giving the video a response out of 5. Poor being 1 out
of 5 and outstanding being 5 out of 5. The most common
answers were great and outstanding both at 38%. Therefore,
showing me that the audience really enjoyed and liked my
music video. I received no ‘poor’ answer which is great and
shows me that my target audience throughout only positive
things about my music video.
The following questions are related to my music video. The questions ask the audience what they liked, disliked and would
change about my music video.
Firstly, I learned that the audience like the montage style of my music video. This style is used in existing rock music video which
people can relate to this style to the rock genre and creates a sense of recognition when they watch my music video, which is
important as I want my audience to clearly see and understand that they are watching a rock music video. Another aspect of
the music video which people liked was the editing. My audience liked the editing style of my music video as it was unique and
creative. They liked the TV theme throughout the music video which I have learnt and I have learnt that the audience like the
music video to be different from the traditions and conventions of a rock music video. Another popular answer was the use of
the first person footage of the drummer. Showing me that using this creative technique was enjoyed by the audience and
makes the music video unique with its own twist on the conventions.
Moving onto the dislikes of my music video. Common answers included: the lack of live footage, the video was too short and
that there wasn’t enough footage of the singer. Firstly, the lack of live footage was down to the band not having enough gig
performances. This made it difficult to gain a lot of live footage of the band playing on stage. Secondly, the lack of footage of
the singer was due to the singer leaving the band through the production stage of my project. I tried to include all aspects of
the singer of the band however due to his absence I was unable to include him throughout the music video. Lastly, The music
video being to short comes under the lack of footage I had of the band. Therefore, I had to cut the song down to match my
footage lengths. On the other hand, this comment can also be a positive feedback response as the audience enjoyed the
video a lot, that they wanted to see more footage and action of the band performing, having fun etc.
The last question based around my music video was: what would you adapt/change in the music video? I had gather
some previous information about this question form the dislikes question as they are very similar questions.
Firstly, the audience would of added more footage of the band playing live. I agree with this change as I would of
personally adapted this aspect as well if I was going to create this task again of producing a music video. Therefore, I
would plan my filming days more efficiently, to ensure I could arrange gigs and live performances for the band and
capture more live footage of the band playing together on stage.
Secondly, the audience would of adapted my music video by making the footage brighter. This is another change I
would agree on as the cameras I used struggled to film in dark areas which made it hard for me to collect enough
footage which was clear and bright enough so the audiences could see the band performing etc. Furthermore, I would
adapt the locations in which I filmed and I would add more lighting in the areas in which I was filming. This would increase
the vision of the cameras as well as the viewer making it clearer for the audiences to see the band performing and being
in the studio for example. I could also complete this adaptation by having a better choice of camera. If I was going to
compete this task again, a better camera which was able to have a clear shot in dark areas would improve my music
video dramatically.
Following on, the audience would of extended the length of the music video as they thought it was to short and needed
to be longer in duration. This change could be completed by me gaining more footage of the band performing, in the
studio and being backstage etc. This would give me a wider range of footage to edit down into a longer song for
example 4 minutes instead of 3.
From these feedback comments I have learnt the likes, dislikes and aspects I would change if was going to approach this
task again, which has helped my build a understanding of how successful my media music video was to my target
audience.
Following on my questionnaire, I then decided to ask the audiences about my ancillary texts, staring with my digipak. I
asked them to rate my digipak in the same style as the music video. This would then help me build an understanding and
knowledge of what their overall thoughts of the digipaks were.
The most common response form this question was: “Good 3 out of 5” at 39%. However, I still managed to receive
responses which chose “great” and “outstanding” answers. This shows to me that the audience have positive views of my
digipak. However, I have also learnt that there are aspect of the digipaks design which could be altered to improve its
rating.
I then asked the audience to write down what they liked and disliked about the digipak. I have learnt that from my
audience feedback that they liked the photos that I had taken and included in the design. Comments included the work
“professional” which means that the audience are pleased with the digipaks photos and the way that I have edited them
to make them black and white creating a creative design as well as following conventions and traditions. Furthermore,
the audience liked as well as disliked the colour scheme of my digipak. Some people liked the gold, black and white
colours on the design as the colours suited one another. However, I have learnt that the white background was disliked
by the audience which would cause me to alter this aspect of the digipak’s design if I was going to approach this task
again. Moreover, I have learnt that the images of the digipak was liked by the audience however, some people didn’t
like the black and white editing and would of liked to see more ‘close ups of the band to capture facial expressions and
to bring them closer to the artist’. Therefore, this is an aspect in which I have learnt from my audience feedback
questionnaire and an aspect in which I would alter if I was going to attempt and create this task again.
The final questions I asked my audience in my feedback questionnaire was to give the magazine advertisement a rating
out of 5 as well as telling me the likes and dislikes of the magazine adverts design.
The most popular response to the rating question was: “great” at 35%. Closely followed by “good” and “outstanding”.
Therefore, I have learnt that the audience had positive thoughts about my magazine advert and tells me that they liked
the overall design alot. However, aspects could be changed to increase the number of outstanding ratings.
From the likes and dislikes question I have learnt that the audience, liked the way that the advert looked professional and
the way that the information on the advert was organised in a good and clear to read way. Therefore, I have learnt that
the organisation of my design has led to clear and easy to read layout which is vital when designing an advert as the
audience must be able to read the information easily and must be draw into the advert to lead them to looking at the
band and finding out more about the band which is the main aim when marketing and branding.
On the other hand, I have learnt from my audience feedback survey that, the audience did not like the fact that the
bands logo was small. Therefore, I would take this information into consideration when re-designing the magazine advert
if I was going to create this task again. People also didn’t like the purple background. Therefore, I would take this aspect
into consideration and I would try out different background colours and styles to attract my target audience more and to
gain a better overall rating of the magazine advert, as well as to grab the readers attention which is vital when marketing
and branding a new product or service. Finally, the audience liked the large image included on the advert as it was bold,
clear and was able to draw in the readers attention into the advert. This is the main purpose of an advert which means I
have fulfil the adverts task. However, if I was going to complete this task again there would be multiple factors I would
improve upon to improve the overall aesthetics of the magazine advertisement to reach an outstanding rating overall.
Blogger :
Throughout my media project I have used blogger.com to document all my research and planning stages as well as the
productions and final products. I was already comfortable and familiar with using blogger as I used it at AS media for my
coursework. Therefore, I had no issues or problems with using this website. Blogger allowed me to blog every stage of my
project which was extremely useful as then I was able to track my progress with the date and time of completion as well as
showing me where I was currently at in my project. I was able to see all of my posts in order as well as my live blog easily with
no stress. I was able to create a formal diary which was organised and user-friendly. This technology help with my research
stage the most as I was able to blog and analyse existing media products and look back at it at anytime when I needed to.
This made it very easy to look back at my analyses and create a summary of the codes and conventions of a rock music
video by looking at he similarities and contrast etc. The planning stage was also made simple with the use of blogger as I
was able to blog ideas and inspirations on my blog which abled me to remember my ideas. I used my blog to my
advantage by blogging updates on progress blogs which would tell me where I am at in my project and how I was going to
progress forward in my stages. Furthermore, If I had forgotten some information such as the codes and conventions I could
quickly and easily look and re-read my blog post. Overall, blogger.com has aided my organisation vastly and I was able to
keep on a track with steady progress. I found blogger extremely useful throughout my project at every stage from research
to my evaluation.
Examples of my blog:
Below are some examples of my A2 blog posts and how they look and have been organised to aid me during my project:
Codes and conventions of a rock music video blog post Magazine advertisement draft 4 blog post
YouTube:
Throughout the research and planning stages, I used YouTube to
find existing media products which I could then analyse in depth
and prepare myself for the planning and further stages of my
project. I am comfortable and familiar with YouTube as I have used
it many times before. YouTube allowed me to choose from a wide
range and variety of music videos to analyse for my project which
made this technology extremely useful as I was able to critically
analyse the codes and conventions to build a strong knowledge
and understanding and which I could use, develop or challenge in
my media products. When analysing existing media texts, I was able
to use YouTube to collect the videos and also embed them into my
blog post which made it useful and easy when looking back at my
notes. Therefore, YouTube was extremely useful and beneficial to
the research stage of my project and when making my media
products.
Example of my blog which uses YouTube in
the research stage of my project:
Google Docs/Drive:
Through the research stage and evaluation stage of my project I used Google Docs to aid me and help me gain a
knowledge and understanding of my target audience and to collect feedback responses about my media products.
Google Docs allowed me create a form document which I could use to create online questionnaires for my research and
evaluation stages. The online questionnaires enabled me to post it onto my blog and social networking sites such as
Facebook. It also allows anyone to fill it out which was beneficial to me and the collection of my responses. I was already
very comfortable and familiar with this technology as I have used it before many times including at AS level. This is why I
chose it when creating questionnaires for my stages as I knew how to create a questionnaire easily and quickly saving my
time and avoiding any complications which could effect my progress. Furthermore, Google Docs allowed me to produce
professional and organised surveys which made it easy for a user to complete without directions. I was able to create
different questions and was able to control how I wanted the user to answer my question. For example, check boxes, scales,
paragraph text boxes etc. Therefore, I was able to receive various answers from my audiences. I didn’t want to make my
questions dull or too long as this may cause the user to give boring answers which wouldn’t be beneficial to me. Therefore, I
made the questions easy and suitable for all ages which lead to me receive multiple responses from a range of audiences.
Once I had collected the amount of response I needed, Google Docs allowed me to view the summary of my responses
which gave me an organised layout of all the individual and collected responses as well as showing the data in graphs and
pie charts which made it useful and clear when analysing my results for my research and evaluation. Also using a online
technology allowed me to gain many responses and in a shorter time compared to printing out the questionnaire and
collecting my results first hand. If I did do this, I wouldn’t be able to see the summary of my responses and would have to do
that myself which would waste a lot of time, which I could be using for other stages to further progress in my project. Lastly, I
was able to make my questions “required” which means the user has to fill out this information before submitting his or hers
response. This option is beneficial to me and the user as it stops them from missing out questions and reminds them to fill out
the questions before submitting. To conclude, Google Docs was very helpful with the research stage by collecting results
about my target audience as well as the evaluation stage of my project were I gained responses from my final products.
Cameras:
Throughout my production stage of my project and filming my music video I used two cameras to shoot my video. The first
and main camera which I used was a Panasonic Lumix 14 mega pixel camera. I used this camera for the majority of my
filming as it was small which was perfect for traveling with and shooting at instant moments. The quality of the camera was
great even though the camera was small and compact. The camera was extremely lightweight which made it perfect for
capturing instant moments and for shooting all day in the studio or at the gig for example. A drawback of this camera was
the fact it struggled when filming in low-key lighting locations. Therefore, I used my iPhone 5 and the light to provide lighting
in the areas where the camera couldn't see clearly. Another drawback of using this camera was the poor battery life. The
camera only has a battery life of 2-3 hours which wasn’t great for me when I was in London filming at the band gig or in the
studio as I couldn’t charge the camera at any point. Therefore, I had to capture moments where I knew I could use for my
music video which narrowed down my footage selection as I would of liked to have a lot more footage of the gig and
studio, which I could of included in my music video. This made it challenging to keep the battery life as well as capturing all
the moments of the gig or studio. Overall, The camera performed excellently and I was able to capture some great footage
which I was able to edit down to produce my music video.
Secondly, I used first person glasses which captured point of view footage of the band and specially the drummer of the
band (Frazer), whilst he was playing which produced some unique and creative footage which I have used in my music
video. The glasses also had a low battery life of 1-2 hours which made it difficult to capture all moments of the gig and
studio action. Therefore, I had to plan my filming around the battery life of the glasses. Another drawback of the glasses was
that they struggled with fast move movements, as the footage became blurred and unclear. Therefore, I made it
challenging to capture the energy and excitement in the performances. Furthermore, The glasses also struggled in dark
locations with low-key lighting. Therefore, I had to use my iPhone 5 and the light to brighten the area in which the glasses
where filming. Finally, the glasses was operated on one button only, which made it hard to control at some areas by
choosing different options for example, choosing between picture taking and video. However, with multiple uses I built an
understating of how to operate the glasses quickly to capture great moments of the band.

Sony Vegas Pro 12:
In the post-production stage of my project I used Sony Vegas pro 12 to edit my music video. I chose this editing platform
because I have it at home which means I could edit my video constantly and didn’t have to be in school to edit my video
which helped me manage my time much better and allowed me to have more time editing my music video to produce a
quality final product. On the other hand, I wasn’t as familiar with this editing platform as I was with Adobe Premier Pro, for
example, as I had used that last year for AS. Therefore, I looked at many tutorials to build my knowledge and
understanding of how to use this software. This meant a lot of practicing which has led me to have a good creative
understanding of how to edit a music video. I also used this software due to the effects and creativity I could express using
different framing and effects which I have used to create a unique and imaginative music video. I found that using this
editing software led to me to be challenged throughout and I had some difficulties with the understanding and achieving
certain effects or cuts during my post-production. Overall, I think that I have gained a new skill in a new technology which I
am proud about and will benefit me in the future.
Adobe Photoshop:
Throughout my production stage of my project I have used Adobe Photoshop for all my design work for my ancillary
texts. I was comfortable and familiar with using Photoshop as I have used it many times before including at AS. This meant
it was much easier for me to use than Vegas Pro. I was able to create effects and express my creativity easily and
produce quality final products.
I hadn't used Photoshop in a long time which meant refreshing my knowledge and skills. Therefore, I went away and
began practicing and designing my ancillary texts. This involved lots of developments which I had made in Photoshop.
Therefore, changing aspects of my designs was extremely easy as I knew what I was doing and it was simple for me to
understand what I wanted and how I could change something to achieve the effect I wanted.
I created my band and production logo, digipak, magazine advertisement and edited all my photographs in Photoshop.
Therefore, this programme has benefited my work vastly as it has allowed me to be unique and creative as well as being
straight forward and professional looking. Photoshop allowed me to choose from a wide range of font styles which I could
choose from, to make my products look aesthetically pleasing and professional. I was also able to colour my designs
easily and quickly, and with a variety of colours and shades to choose from. This meant that Photoshop was the ideal
programme I could use for designing and producing my ancillary texts.
I believe that I was very experimental with using Photoshop as I wanted to learn more and gain more developed skills in
this software. Overall, I think that this technology has benefited me greatly as I used Photoshop throughout the
production stage of my project and has aided me to produce quality and professional looking final products.

A2 media evaluation

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3. I began my A2 media project by researching into the history and types of music videos and analysing music videos, digipaks and magazine advertisements, to help me build a knowledge and understanding of their background and their codes and conventions. I looked at many rock/metal music videos, digipaks and adverts, as this was my chosen bands genre of music, to find out their codes and conventions which I could follow, develop and challenge in my media products. I learned that rock music videos are mostly performance style videos which means the band play to the camera or to an audience which helps create synergy and representation of rock/metal bands and artists. I also learned that mise-en-scene is very significant in rock music videos as it helps to give band and genre recognition to the audience. I found that my research was extremely useful when planning and making my media products and I go into more detail about the codes and conventions of rock music videos on blog post: Thursday 11th September 2014. Throughout my final media products, there are similar aspects of mise-en-scene, camera, editing and sound. This is due to me following the codes and conventions. On the other hand, I have added my own creativity and style to challenge and develop on the conventions of the rock genre. Music video: Camera When analysing and reviewing existing music videos, I found out that rock music videos use various camera angles and positions to help create certain effects and also understanding. Therefore, I wanted to incorporate these angles and camera positions to achieve the best possible effects for my own video. In my analysis of Thunderstruck and Highway to Hell by AC/DC (blog posts: 7th July 2014 and 15th July 2014) I was inspired by the use of P.O.V shots and how the directors shot the drummer of the band using side angles and mid-shots to allow the audience to see the drum kit and the drummer performing to give the audience understanding and recognition. Therefore, I gave my chosen bands drummer P.O.V glasses to collect first person footage of him playing which resulted in excellent footage. I also shot the drummer of my chosen band at a mid-shot to allow the audience to see him performing as this was the style of my music video and allows the audience to understand what they are listening to and seeing on screen. On the other hand, I had chosen to shoot the drummer at a low angle to add my own creativity to the conventions and to develop on them which allowed me to be experimental which resulted in amazing shots of the drummers performance. However, still following and using the conventions. AC / DC Music video
  • 4. Music video: Editing In the post production stage of my music video (editing) I was inspired by real media forms which I have used and developed on, as well as creating my own style, vision and effects which I have used throughout my music video to build a concept and a style which I believe challenges real media products also. When analysing and looking at an existing music video, “Drown by Bring me the horizon”, I found that in the video is a television style pause which links to the narrative of the song as well as creating a unique effect on the video and the song. The paused screen is a TV styled which gave me inspiration for my style of music video. However I wanted more than just one paused screen to help me build a television styled music video. Therefore, added effects on Vegas Pro, such as a fuzzy turning on screen, colour screens, an interval screen which gives the effect of the music video breaking down and failing and the effect of the television being switched off at the end of the music video. All these effects helped me to construct a creative and unique style to the rock genre, which therefore develops and challenges the codes and conventions of traditional rock music videos. Furthermore, after analysing more rock music videos I found that the shots cut quickly and the videos are traditionally fast paced. This gave me the idea of having my music video in the style of a montage. This would allow me to include various and creative aspects of the band and to show the audience: behind the scenes footage and funny moments as well as performances on and off stage. The montage style is used in the music video of “Guns N’ Roses – Paradise City” which I have analysis in further detail in blog post: 24th June 2014. This style allows audiences to see the band in a different light and shows how they act and behave on as well as off stage which gives the audiences an insight to the bands life as rock musicians. Therefore, I wanted to challenge and use this style in my music video but to add my own twist and creativity to the style to produce my own effects and results. With the television and montage style my music video used, developed and challenges the codes and conventions of real and existing rock music videos. Bring me the horizon Music Video Guns N’ Roses Music Video
  • 5. Music video: Mise-en-scene When analysing existing rock music videos, I found that the mise-en-scene of the videos are extremely similar and have a set of conventions which I have followed. From the way the band are represented to the audience, to the lighting on stage. Setting: Firstly, the setting for my music video is on a stage in which props, such as the bands instruments and amplifiers, are placed as well as lighting above and around, projecting down onto the stage. I also have various locations where the band have been filmed including the studio and backstage Area, all of which have low key lighting which goes against the traditional conventions of a rock music video as the settings are typically well lit to ensure the camera and audience can see the band clearly while they perform. I have challenged this convention to allow the genre of rock and metal to be identified, as this genre is associated with dark related things. For example: skulls and tattoos which are commonly used in the marketing and branding of rock musicians and bands. On the stage is the bands logo in the background. This is a convention of rock bands as it identifies the band to the audience as well as a marketing and branding image. This is therefore an example of how I have used the conventions of real rock music products in my production. Body Language: In existing media products the band members have their own style and way of performing on stage and how they engage with the crowd. My band follow these styles including the way they engage with the audience by raising their arms causing a crowd reaction which creates energy and excitement in the performance. Furthermore, the way the band finish and bow to the audience is a convention they follow. The band all come together and bow together as a group. Even going as far as using the same hand signs and poses of existing bands e.g. the peace hand sign. AC/DC / Guns N’ Roses Music video Guns N’ Roses Music video
  • 6. Facial expressions: The facial expressions of my bands include: focused and happy. This is a convention of rock musicians and bands as they want to be represented looking happy and having a great time on and off stage. Their body language and facial expressions are significant as it reflects on the audience creating energy and excitement for the crowd. They also have focused facial expressions during their performances as they are concentrating on playing their instruments and creating the best sounds possible. Therefore, my media product has followed the conventions of real media products. Hair + Make-up Although the band do not wear make-up, the bands hair styles follow the conventions and genre of rock and metal. The hair convention of existing rock/metal bands is long hair below the shoulder. Although not all of my bands members have this style, two of the members do which means I have followed the conventions of the genre as well as challenging and developing on the hair convention with the other band members. Although they still have long hair which makes them fit into the genre of rock and metal. Positioning: The position of my band on stage has followed and uses conventions of real rock/metal music videos. The drummer is positioned at the back of the stage however, is usually raised up to allow the audience to see him perform. I have challenged this as I have not raised my drummer up. I have kept him the same level as the rest of the band. This connotes equality as the band are all equal and no one is above or more important than anyone else. The bassist and lead guitarists are positioned on the left hand side of the singer. The other guitarist is positioned on the right hand side of the singer. Finally, the singer is placed in the centre of the stage at the front which connotes he is the most significant part of the band. However, all members of the band, except the drummer, move around on stage to create an exciting performance and to interact with the audience. • 7. Costume: When analysing existing rock music videos I had gained the knowledge of the styles and costume choices the band members wear on and off stage. Therefore, gaining understanding of the rock/metal genre and the conventions of costume. Costume is significant in the performance of a band as it helps the audience to recognise the individual members. For example, Slash in Guns N’ Roses is known for wearing his iconic top hat. In my music video, my band wore clothing which related to the rock/metal genre which made it clear to the audience about the genre as well as recognition of the band. In my music video I have followed and uses the conventions of existing media products. For example, the bassist of the band, George, wears vests which is a convection of rock musicians. The vest is worn for style as well as to show the members tattoos on his arm which also relates back to the rock/metal genre as it is stereotypical that rock musicians have tattoos. Furthermore, I have used the conventions in the digipak of my production as it follows the styles and aesthetics of existing bands. For example, in my digipak, the main photo is the band together. Each members has their specific style and fashion sense. However they all link into the rock genre and use the conventions. Including, the guitarist, Tom. He wears a leather jacket in the photo which is a symbolic item of clothing as it relates the rock genre and is a stereotypical look. This also helps the audience to understand that they are viewing a band in the rock genre as the leather look is commonly worn by rock musicians and bands. The band also wear denim jackets which is another way the digipak follows and uses the conventions. Existing bands such as Guns N’ Roses are seen wearing denim jackets. As the band are extremely successful, this look has become linked to the rock genre due to their popularity. Furthermore, the band also wear hats which is a convention of real media products and shows how my band have followed the style and image of existing bands. This helps the audience to recognise the band and individual members due to their look, as well as to instantly understand that they are viewing a rock band. • 9. From analysing existing music videos, digipaks and magazine adverts, I built an understanding and knowledge of how many similarities they include with one and other. This is used to create synergy between the products and understanding for the audience as it helps them to link the texts together using these similarities which can be instantly recognised. In all my media texts I have included the bands logo clearly to create synergy and recognition for my audience. This is significant, as this way the audience can instantly understand the band and who they are viewing in each media product. Although the bands logo is not the same size in each of the media products, I have still been constant and clear by making the logo centred, which draws the readers attention to the text. I have also included the production logo in each of my media products to create synergy and relations, as well as helping the audience understand the media text by recognition. I have learnt from my research that colours are significant in the branding of a band and the colours are symbolic and recognisable to the product. Therefore, I have used this information to make my products similar by using the same colour scheme of: white, black, gold and purple. Using the same colour scheme in each of my medias creates synergy between them and for the audience, which is important when branding and marketing a band or product. Therefore, creating an effect on my audience, as when the see those colours they will think of the band and their products and will create links and relations between each media. In all of my media texts I have used the same font style to create synergy and recognition for my audience. In my media texts I have used the font style: Magneto. This font is used in the bands logo, which is seen in each media product and also for the text in the music video, digipak and magazine advertisement. This font represents the band and once the audience see the font they will think of the logo and the band which is significant when branding and marketing. Digipak Advert Music video
  • 10. Furthermore, my media products all uses the same image and photo styles and editing, to create synergy and to link all the media products together. In both my magazine advertisement and my digipak designs, I have used similar photos and styles to represent my band. I have used editing techniques to make the images similar by making them black and white, which follows the rock genre and conventions, as well as creating synergy and allowing the audience to identify the style of the band and the way they are marketed and branded. The photos are also similar due to the scenery, location and clothing the band members were wearing, as they had been taken at the same location on the same day, during a photoshoot that I had organised. Therefore, there are visible similarities between the photos and the styles in which they have been taken and edited. Sound: Through sound I was able to create synergy and similarities between each of my media products. I have used sound and text to create synergy between my texts, as this helps to build understanding for my audience and makes it easily identifiable as being my bands product. In all of my media products I have used the text saying: “Let us drown”. This is my bands album name which is used to market the band and their debut album. The text is used in all my medias and I have made it clear for my audience to see and read as well as making it centred and focused on, which grabs the readers attention when reading and viewing my medias. This texts creates synergy in all my medias as it is seen throughout each. It is also sung by the singer of my band as it is the title of the song, which helps when understanding each media and how the link together. Therefore, I feel that sound, colours, fonts, texts, photos and images in my music video and in my digipak and advert, has created an effective marketing and branding combination between my main text and my ancillary texts. This is because I have used similar elements and have created a specific style and theme between my texts which allows my audience to be able to easily understand and recognise the band. This will also help them to remember the band and their products which is vital when marketing and branding.

  • 12. Firstly, I created a questionnaire on Google Docs which abled me to create an online survey which anyone could fill in, which was useful for me, as I could get a range of various answers and responses. After creating the survey I could then begin to collect responses. Firstly, I made my friends and family fill out my questionnaire and then posted in on social media including Facebook, which would allow a mass audience to fill out my survey so I could get a fully diverse range of responses from a wide variety of ages. The main purpose of my media products is to engage with audiences and to see how they respond to my texts. Therefore, creating a survey allowed me to gather all this information about my media texts and to see how well my target audience liked it or disliked it and to comment on things I could alter or change in my medias. Therefore, giving me a critical feedback which is beneficial for my evaluation. Having an online questionnaire allowed me to gather a range of responses and in a short amount of time. I set out to get at least 50 response which also meant going out first hand and collecting primary data. After collecting all my information back I had over 50 responses which was excellent, as this gives me a wide range of answers and responses as well as giving me reliable and accurate data which can be summarised. With over 50 responses I was able to see whether my products had been successful and appealing to my target audience or not and what I would alter or change if I was to approach creating this project again. For my questionnaire, I decided to create a variety of questions which linked to my three media products. I wanted to find out what my audience liked, disliked and would change in my media products.
  • 13. The first opening questions involved me asking about gender, age, favourite music genres, how often they watch music videos and how do they watch music videos. I asked these opening questions so I could build an understanding of the person filling out my questionnaire and to see how their tastes and preferences responded to my rock music video. Firstly, the main gender that filled out my questionnaire was by males at 72% to females at 28%. This wasn’t a shock to me as males are my target audience for my media products. So it was significant to receive a high number of males filling out my survey as their responses as my target audience matter greatly. Secondly, the main age range was 16-21 year olds. This was also my target audience age range. Therefore, I received important data from the age range I was targeting at which is vital when receiving critical feedback. The high number of this age group connotes that many have filed out my survey on social networking sites as they are stereotypically the age that use them. I had received a range of different answers from the favourite genre question. The most common answer was hip-hop/rap, closely followed by rock and electronic/dance. This information shows that I will receive a range of opinions of a genre in which people are unfamiliar by which gives me a diverse spread of responses. On the other hand, the rock genre was also a popular answer which is important as this is my target market and I am keen to find out what they say about my final media products as they are familiar with the codes and conventions of this genre and can link my products to existing real media texts.
  • 14. Continuing from the last slide, I asked my audience how often they watched music videos to help me build an understanding and to construct a personality about the person filling out my questionnaire. The most common answer was more that twice a week closely followed by everyday. This shows me that my audience watch a lot of music videos and have a great knowledge of what a music video include, their codes and conventions and what makes them so popular to their target market. Therefore, the responses are compared to real media products and allows me to see how my product links and differs from existing music videos. I then asked how the audience watch music videos. The most popular answer in this question was on YouTube which was closely followed by people watching music videos on TV. I expected YouTube to be the most popular response, as my target audience are the age range which are stereotypically involved with online sites such a YouTube and spend a lot of their time online which lead to teenagers going onto websites such a YouTube to find entertainment. My next question involved the audience watching my music video and giving the video a response out of 5. Poor being 1 out of 5 and outstanding being 5 out of 5. The most common answers were great and outstanding both at 38%. Therefore, showing me that the audience really enjoyed and liked my music video. I received no ‘poor’ answer which is great and shows me that my target audience throughout only positive things about my music video.
  • 15. The following questions are related to my music video. The questions ask the audience what they liked, disliked and would change about my music video. Firstly, I learned that the audience like the montage style of my music video. This style is used in existing rock music video which people can relate to this style to the rock genre and creates a sense of recognition when they watch my music video, which is important as I want my audience to clearly see and understand that they are watching a rock music video. Another aspect of the music video which people liked was the editing. My audience liked the editing style of my music video as it was unique and creative. They liked the TV theme throughout the music video which I have learnt and I have learnt that the audience like the music video to be different from the traditions and conventions of a rock music video. Another popular answer was the use of the first person footage of the drummer. Showing me that using this creative technique was enjoyed by the audience and makes the music video unique with its own twist on the conventions. Moving onto the dislikes of my music video. Common answers included: the lack of live footage, the video was too short and that there wasn’t enough footage of the singer. Firstly, the lack of live footage was down to the band not having enough gig performances. This made it difficult to gain a lot of live footage of the band playing on stage. Secondly, the lack of footage of the singer was due to the singer leaving the band through the production stage of my project. I tried to include all aspects of the singer of the band however due to his absence I was unable to include him throughout the music video. Lastly, The music video being to short comes under the lack of footage I had of the band. Therefore, I had to cut the song down to match my footage lengths. On the other hand, this comment can also be a positive feedback response as the audience enjoyed the video a lot, that they wanted to see more footage and action of the band performing, having fun etc.
  • 16. The last question based around my music video was: what would you adapt/change in the music video? I had gather some previous information about this question form the dislikes question as they are very similar questions. Firstly, the audience would of added more footage of the band playing live. I agree with this change as I would of personally adapted this aspect as well if I was going to create this task again of producing a music video. Therefore, I would plan my filming days more efficiently, to ensure I could arrange gigs and live performances for the band and capture more live footage of the band playing together on stage. Secondly, the audience would of adapted my music video by making the footage brighter. This is another change I would agree on as the cameras I used struggled to film in dark areas which made it hard for me to collect enough footage which was clear and bright enough so the audiences could see the band performing etc. Furthermore, I would adapt the locations in which I filmed and I would add more lighting in the areas in which I was filming. This would increase the vision of the cameras as well as the viewer making it clearer for the audiences to see the band performing and being in the studio for example. I could also complete this adaptation by having a better choice of camera. If I was going to compete this task again, a better camera which was able to have a clear shot in dark areas would improve my music video dramatically. Following on, the audience would of extended the length of the music video as they thought it was to short and needed to be longer in duration. This change could be completed by me gaining more footage of the band performing, in the studio and being backstage etc. This would give me a wider range of footage to edit down into a longer song for example 4 minutes instead of 3. From these feedback comments I have learnt the likes, dislikes and aspects I would change if was going to approach this task again, which has helped my build a understanding of how successful my media music video was to my target audience.
  • 17. Following on my questionnaire, I then decided to ask the audiences about my ancillary texts, staring with my digipak. I asked them to rate my digipak in the same style as the music video. This would then help me build an understanding and knowledge of what their overall thoughts of the digipaks were. The most common response form this question was: “Good 3 out of 5” at 39%. However, I still managed to receive responses which chose “great” and “outstanding” answers. This shows to me that the audience have positive views of my digipak. However, I have also learnt that there are aspect of the digipaks design which could be altered to improve its rating. I then asked the audience to write down what they liked and disliked about the digipak. I have learnt that from my audience feedback that they liked the photos that I had taken and included in the design. Comments included the work “professional” which means that the audience are pleased with the digipaks photos and the way that I have edited them to make them black and white creating a creative design as well as following conventions and traditions. Furthermore, the audience liked as well as disliked the colour scheme of my digipak. Some people liked the gold, black and white colours on the design as the colours suited one another. However, I have learnt that the white background was disliked by the audience which would cause me to alter this aspect of the digipak’s design if I was going to approach this task again. Moreover, I have learnt that the images of the digipak was liked by the audience however, some people didn’t like the black and white editing and would of liked to see more ‘close ups of the band to capture facial expressions and to bring them closer to the artist’. Therefore, this is an aspect in which I have learnt from my audience feedback questionnaire and an aspect in which I would alter if I was going to attempt and create this task again.
  • 18. The final questions I asked my audience in my feedback questionnaire was to give the magazine advertisement a rating out of 5 as well as telling me the likes and dislikes of the magazine adverts design. The most popular response to the rating question was: “great” at 35%. Closely followed by “good” and “outstanding”. Therefore, I have learnt that the audience had positive thoughts about my magazine advert and tells me that they liked the overall design alot. However, aspects could be changed to increase the number of outstanding ratings. From the likes and dislikes question I have learnt that the audience, liked the way that the advert looked professional and the way that the information on the advert was organised in a good and clear to read way. Therefore, I have learnt that the organisation of my design has led to clear and easy to read layout which is vital when designing an advert as the audience must be able to read the information easily and must be draw into the advert to lead them to looking at the band and finding out more about the band which is the main aim when marketing and branding. On the other hand, I have learnt from my audience feedback survey that, the audience did not like the fact that the bands logo was small. Therefore, I would take this information into consideration when re-designing the magazine advert if I was going to create this task again. People also didn’t like the purple background. Therefore, I would take this aspect into consideration and I would try out different background colours and styles to attract my target audience more and to gain a better overall rating of the magazine advert, as well as to grab the readers attention which is vital when marketing and branding a new product or service. Finally, the audience liked the large image included on the advert as it was bold, clear and was able to draw in the readers attention into the advert. This is the main purpose of an advert which means I have fulfil the adverts task. However, if I was going to complete this task again there would be multiple factors I would improve upon to improve the overall aesthetics of the magazine advertisement to reach an outstanding rating overall.

  • 20. Blogger : Throughout my media project I have used blogger.com to document all my research and planning stages as well as the productions and final products. I was already comfortable and familiar with using blogger as I used it at AS media for my coursework. Therefore, I had no issues or problems with using this website. Blogger allowed me to blog every stage of my project which was extremely useful as then I was able to track my progress with the date and time of completion as well as showing me where I was currently at in my project. I was able to see all of my posts in order as well as my live blog easily with no stress. I was able to create a formal diary which was organised and user-friendly. This technology help with my research stage the most as I was able to blog and analyse existing media products and look back at it at anytime when I needed to. This made it very easy to look back at my analyses and create a summary of the codes and conventions of a rock music video by looking at he similarities and contrast etc. The planning stage was also made simple with the use of blogger as I was able to blog ideas and inspirations on my blog which abled me to remember my ideas. I used my blog to my advantage by blogging updates on progress blogs which would tell me where I am at in my project and how I was going to progress forward in my stages. Furthermore, If I had forgotten some information such as the codes and conventions I could quickly and easily look and re-read my blog post. Overall, blogger.com has aided my organisation vastly and I was able to keep on a track with steady progress. I found blogger extremely useful throughout my project at every stage from research to my evaluation.
  • 21. Examples of my blog: Below are some examples of my A2 blog posts and how they look and have been organised to aid me during my project: Codes and conventions of a rock music video blog post Magazine advertisement draft 4 blog post
  • 22. YouTube: Throughout the research and planning stages, I used YouTube to find existing media products which I could then analyse in depth and prepare myself for the planning and further stages of my project. I am comfortable and familiar with YouTube as I have used it many times before. YouTube allowed me to choose from a wide range and variety of music videos to analyse for my project which made this technology extremely useful as I was able to critically analyse the codes and conventions to build a strong knowledge and understanding and which I could use, develop or challenge in my media products. When analysing existing media texts, I was able to use YouTube to collect the videos and also embed them into my blog post which made it useful and easy when looking back at my notes. Therefore, YouTube was extremely useful and beneficial to the research stage of my project and when making my media products. Example of my blog which uses YouTube in the research stage of my project:
  • 23. Google Docs/Drive: Through the research stage and evaluation stage of my project I used Google Docs to aid me and help me gain a knowledge and understanding of my target audience and to collect feedback responses about my media products. Google Docs allowed me create a form document which I could use to create online questionnaires for my research and evaluation stages. The online questionnaires enabled me to post it onto my blog and social networking sites such as Facebook. It also allows anyone to fill it out which was beneficial to me and the collection of my responses. I was already very comfortable and familiar with this technology as I have used it before many times including at AS level. This is why I chose it when creating questionnaires for my stages as I knew how to create a questionnaire easily and quickly saving my time and avoiding any complications which could effect my progress. Furthermore, Google Docs allowed me to produce professional and organised surveys which made it easy for a user to complete without directions. I was able to create different questions and was able to control how I wanted the user to answer my question. For example, check boxes, scales, paragraph text boxes etc. Therefore, I was able to receive various answers from my audiences. I didn’t want to make my questions dull or too long as this may cause the user to give boring answers which wouldn’t be beneficial to me. Therefore, I made the questions easy and suitable for all ages which lead to me receive multiple responses from a range of audiences. Once I had collected the amount of response I needed, Google Docs allowed me to view the summary of my responses which gave me an organised layout of all the individual and collected responses as well as showing the data in graphs and pie charts which made it useful and clear when analysing my results for my research and evaluation. Also using a online technology allowed me to gain many responses and in a shorter time compared to printing out the questionnaire and collecting my results first hand. If I did do this, I wouldn’t be able to see the summary of my responses and would have to do that myself which would waste a lot of time, which I could be using for other stages to further progress in my project. Lastly, I was able to make my questions “required” which means the user has to fill out this information before submitting his or hers response. This option is beneficial to me and the user as it stops them from missing out questions and reminds them to fill out the questions before submitting. To conclude, Google Docs was very helpful with the research stage by collecting results about my target audience as well as the evaluation stage of my project were I gained responses from my final products.
  • 24. Cameras: Throughout my production stage of my project and filming my music video I used two cameras to shoot my video. The first and main camera which I used was a Panasonic Lumix 14 mega pixel camera. I used this camera for the majority of my filming as it was small which was perfect for traveling with and shooting at instant moments. The quality of the camera was great even though the camera was small and compact. The camera was extremely lightweight which made it perfect for capturing instant moments and for shooting all day in the studio or at the gig for example. A drawback of this camera was the fact it struggled when filming in low-key lighting locations. Therefore, I used my iPhone 5 and the light to provide lighting in the areas where the camera couldn't see clearly. Another drawback of using this camera was the poor battery life. The camera only has a battery life of 2-3 hours which wasn’t great for me when I was in London filming at the band gig or in the studio as I couldn’t charge the camera at any point. Therefore, I had to capture moments where I knew I could use for my music video which narrowed down my footage selection as I would of liked to have a lot more footage of the gig and studio, which I could of included in my music video. This made it challenging to keep the battery life as well as capturing all the moments of the gig or studio. Overall, The camera performed excellently and I was able to capture some great footage which I was able to edit down to produce my music video. Secondly, I used first person glasses which captured point of view footage of the band and specially the drummer of the band (Frazer), whilst he was playing which produced some unique and creative footage which I have used in my music video. The glasses also had a low battery life of 1-2 hours which made it difficult to capture all moments of the gig and studio action. Therefore, I had to plan my filming around the battery life of the glasses. Another drawback of the glasses was that they struggled with fast move movements, as the footage became blurred and unclear. Therefore, I made it challenging to capture the energy and excitement in the performances. Furthermore, The glasses also struggled in dark locations with low-key lighting. Therefore, I had to use my iPhone 5 and the light to brighten the area in which the glasses where filming. Finally, the glasses was operated on one button only, which made it hard to control at some areas by choosing different options for example, choosing between picture taking and video. However, with multiple uses I built an understating of how to operate the glasses quickly to capture great moments of the band. Panasonic camera P.O.V. glasses
  • 25. Sony Vegas Pro 12: In the post-production stage of my project I used Sony Vegas pro 12 to edit my music video. I chose this editing platform because I have it at home which means I could edit my video constantly and didn’t have to be in school to edit my video which helped me manage my time much better and allowed me to have more time editing my music video to produce a quality final product. On the other hand, I wasn’t as familiar with this editing platform as I was with Adobe Premier Pro, for example, as I had used that last year for AS. Therefore, I looked at many tutorials to build my knowledge and understanding of how to use this software. This meant a lot of practicing which has led me to have a good creative understanding of how to edit a music video. I also used this software due to the effects and creativity I could express using different framing and effects which I have used to create a unique and imaginative music video. I found that using this editing software led to me to be challenged throughout and I had some difficulties with the understanding and achieving certain effects or cuts during my post-production. Overall, I think that I have gained a new skill in a new technology which I am proud about and will benefit me in the future.
  • 26. Adobe Photoshop: Throughout my production stage of my project I have used Adobe Photoshop for all my design work for my ancillary texts. I was comfortable and familiar with using Photoshop as I have used it many times before including at AS. This meant it was much easier for me to use than Vegas Pro. I was able to create effects and express my creativity easily and produce quality final products. I hadn't used Photoshop in a long time which meant refreshing my knowledge and skills. Therefore, I went away and began practicing and designing my ancillary texts. This involved lots of developments which I had made in Photoshop. Therefore, changing aspects of my designs was extremely easy as I knew what I was doing and it was simple for me to understand what I wanted and how I could change something to achieve the effect I wanted. I created my band and production logo, digipak, magazine advertisement and edited all my photographs in Photoshop. Therefore, this programme has benefited my work vastly as it has allowed me to be unique and creative as well as being straight forward and professional looking. Photoshop allowed me to choose from a wide range of font styles which I could choose from, to make my products look aesthetically pleasing and professional. I was also able to colour my designs easily and quickly, and with a variety of colours and shades to choose from. This meant that Photoshop was the ideal programme I could use for designing and producing my ancillary texts. I believe that I was very experimental with using Photoshop as I wanted to learn more and gain more developed skills in this software. Overall, I think that this technology has benefited me greatly as I used Photoshop throughout the production stage of my project and has aided me to produce quality and professional looking final products.
