2. All about Streetlights
• Streetlights have been proven to reduce pedestrian accidents by around 50% compared
to no lighting
• Intersections and highway interchanges tend to have fewer crashes when lighted by
streetlights
• Blue streetlights have been proven to help prevent suicides
• Over 7.5 million Streetlights in the UK
• Streetlights help to prevent crime in urban and suburban areas
• Can increase potential business hours in city centre areas
3. The Problem
• It costs 15p a night to power 1 streetlight in winter
• Over £1 million per night spent on streetlights in winter
• Light pollution means that the beauty of the night sky is lost to those
living in urban areas
• Streetlights produce around 830,000 tons of CO2 pollution a year
• Around £100 million on unused lights a year
• 27.3% of streetlight energy wasted
4. Our Solution
• Streetlights will turn on the lights in front of and behind the the
car when it pulls onto the carriageway
• This will have the benefits of streetlights with energy saving
benefits
• Light pollution would be dramatically reduced as lights would
only come on when required
• Costs for street lighting could be cut by as much as £50
million a year
• Could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 232,400 tons a
year
5. How it works
• The sensor picks up the movement of the car
• This sends information to the server through
the Arduino
• The server then works out which lights to turn
on from the position of the Arduino
• Then, through the broker, information is then
sent to all the relevant Arduinos, which turns
on their lights
6. Adaptations
This system could then be adapted to be
used in other ways, these include:
• Traffic control
• If a light is broken the system can tell
• In an emergency all the lights can be lit or
turned off remotely
