Why do we measure at all? Well, measurements are important. If we look at the right picture it will be quite clear that it is a costly and serious business to produce paper. We run the production from measurements and determines what to do with the paper machine in order to produce the right quality.
Most likely they started to measure with instruments more than hundred years ago.. You need to be in control of what you produce You need to increase the accuracy and not just to estimate the values You need repeatable measurements You need to get values for the different properties. It must be hundred of different properties today that could be measured… With measurements the production will be more stable Easier communication with customers. Both for claims but also when discussing orders etc. Just imagine a discussion between a paper mill and their customer if they are not allowed to discuss about measured values…: -Hello, I would like to purchase 10 000 ton of your white paper…-Yes, but we have 10 grades of white paper…-Oh, I mean the rather heavy white paper with a rough surface, do you know which paper I am referring to? –No, but we have a slightly white rough paper but it is the lightest we produce, could that be the one you refer to?….and so on… Measurements are needed to determine the paper! Sharper limits in the production makes measurements important You will get a higher up-time on the paper machine if you measure Cutting cost, reduced number of web brakes, rejected tambours, excessive use of fibres and chemicals etc. Increased production Basically you can say that with todays machines you will not be able to run the production without any measurements…
If your production is important you need Traceable Calibration The production is evaluated by the measurements, so they are important, they need traceable calibration You need Traceable Calibration in order to trust the measured result Traceable Calibration gives higher repeatablility Traceable Calibration gives higher reproduceability Traceable Calibration helps to cut cost since the cost for only one Tambour easily pays a PMA and calibration visit. If we can help to save just one tambour per year it will pay the visit many times around… It is many times an ISO requirement to have Traceable Calibration During discussions with customers about claims or measured values it is good to know that your values comes from an instrument that has been Calibrated with Traceable Calibration tools…
